‘Seven Steps To The Green Door’ is een Duitse prog band. SSTTGD bestaat uit verschillende vocalisten en muzikanten. Marek Arnold is multi-instrumentalist, hij speelt minstens zeven instrumenten. Toch is het niet genoeg om de muziek en de personages gestalte te geven. Daarom doen er met ‘The?Lie’ gastmuzikanten en vocalisten mee. Dit is het tweede deel van de trilogie van ‘The?Book’. Met het concept laat de band zien dat ze kritisch staan tegenover het (hedendaagse) fanatisme in religie. ‘The?Lie’ bevat diverse dialogen, bovendien spreken een aantal personages hun gedachten uit. Het verhaal, dat heel wat verwijten bevat, wordt verduidelijkt in een 48 pagina’s tellend boekje.
‘A Ω -I’ begint met onweer, regen en het geluid dat van klankschalen lijkt te komen. ‘Father’ (Peter Jones) leest een brief voor. Deze gaat onder andere over zijn gevoelens die hij had toen zijn zoon (‘Samuel’) net geboren was. Dit wordt ondersteund door sferische muziek. ‘Samuel’ (Lars Köhler) zingt enkele woorden op de achtergrond, dit zorgt voor een bijzondere harmonie. Je hoort de overgang naar ‘Salvation’. De percussie is rustig, maar mooi. Er is een goed opgebouwde verandering naar rock. Meerdere stemmen zingen een paar keer
“Save me”.
Ook dit is in perfecte harmonie.
Orgelspel geeft de wending aan naar ‘A Price To Pray – I (Spring)’. De percussie klinkt te vlak in het chaotische stuk. Er is een dialoog, er klinkt wat boosheid in hun stemmen. De rust keer terug in ‘A Dream That Strayed I’. Toch neemt het verhaal een dramatische wending. ‘Evangeline’, de geliefde van ‘Samuel’ is zwanger. ‘Father’ ziet de zwangerschap als een schande. Het meisje en de baby zijn niet welkom.
‘A Price To Pray- II(Autumn)’ heeft een pittige start waarin boosheid tot uiting komt. Op de achtergrond wordt een enkele zin gegrunt, dit loopt door de cleane zang heen. De personages “praten” door elkaar heen. Het vioolspel en de overige muziek komen een beetje in de verdrukking door het kille drumwerk. Na een wending met strijkers klinkt de stem van ‘Evangeline’ in ‘A Dream That Strayed- II’ vol ongeloof. Samuel staat tussen twee vuren in, en lijkt de kant van zijn vader te kiezen. Het instrumentale stuk is gevoelig gespeeld.
Leidt ‘A Ω – II’ (ook) tot een breuk tussen ‘Father’ en ‘Samuel’? ‘Samuel’ wil de situatie ontvluchten. ‘Heaven’ wordt door de cast gezongen, de eerste woorden zijn:
” Don’t walk away, stay.”
‘Evangeline’ zingt helder in ‘The Word Made Flesh’. Nu is er nog rust in zang en muziek. Er ontstaat een discussie tussen ‘Father’ en ‘Evangeline’. Het instrumentale stuk is niet perfect van geluidskwaliteit. In ‘Hear My Voice Tonight’ zingen een paar personages tegen elkaar in. De balans blijft bewaard. Regen en onweer wordt opgevolgd door een klassiek georiënteerd stuk. Dit fantastische nummer lijkt te eindigen, maar er volgen nog diverse geleidelijke wendingen.
‘Come To Your Father’ heeft een aparte maar boeiende start. De zang is dramatisch, dat past bij de onrustige muziek. Ineens is er rust in de muziek, wat een gave twist!
‘Father’ spreekt enkele zinnen. Een stem wordt gebruikt als aanvulling in zowel het vocale als in het instrumentale stuk. Daarna is er een mooie, uitgebreide opbouw naar het einde.
Meestal is de geluidskwaliteit goed, waardoor de diverse laagjes in zang en muziek goed tot hun recht komen. Dit album is vrij gecompliceerd, niet alleen qua muziek, ook wat betreft het verhaal. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met gevarieerde, instrumentale stukken. ‘The?Lie’ is een prachtige ‘rock opera’ om in alle rust naar te luisteren.

Seven Steps To The Green Door‘ is a German prog band. SSTTGD consists of several vocalists and musicians. Marek Arnold is a multi-instrumentalist, he plays at least seven instruments. Usually the sound quality is good, so that the various layers in vocals and music come into their own. This album is quite complicated, not only in terms of music, but also in terms of the story.
