Over een paar jaar bestaat de Amerikaanse rockband Black Stone Cherry alweer 20 jaar. ‘Black to the Blues volume 2’ is hun tweede album met covers. Op deze EP brengen ze een ode aan onder andere Howlin’ Wolf, en Son House.

Je tapt vanzelf mee met je voet bij het intro van Big Legged Woman. De eerste paar de seconden zijn anders, dan hoor je duidelijk de overeenkomsten maar ook zeker de verschillen met het origineel van Freddie King. De licht ruwe zang past prima bij de muziek. Het gitaarspel is prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon.
Het pianospel is goed toegevoegd. Het instrumentale stuk is heerlijk, het is ruiger dan het origineel, maar dat past bij Black Stone Cherry. Ze hebben er een eigen, opzwepende versie van gemaakt. Deze eindigt vrij plotseling, leuk gedaan!

Zoals verwacht is de versie van ‘Me & The Devil Blues’ van deze jongens een stuk pittiger dan het origineel van Robert Johnson. Het mid tempo zorgt voor een heerlijke flow. Op de achtergrond hoor je toegevoegde, elektronische geluiden. De balans tussen gitaren en bas is prima. Het volume van het drumwerk is een tijdje iets aan de zachte kant in verhouding tot het totaalplaatje. Het geheel klinkt lekker, weer valt het toetsenwerk positief op. Er zit een heerlijk portie drumwerk in de opbouw naar het einde.

Ook ‘All Your Love (I Miss Loving)’ is al talloze keren gecoverd, onder andere door Gary Moore. Deze cover door Black Stone Cherry start ook in mid tempo, maar dan wel een eigen versie.
Het instrumentale stuk is old skool blues en aangenaam opzwepend, en dat blijft even zo, ook als de zang erbij komt. De veranderingen in tempo vloeien in elkaar over. Jammer dat het einde langzaam wordt weggedraaid.

‘Down In The Bottom’ wordt in de versie van Black Stone Cherry ook een stukje pittiger, en zo hoort het ook.

‘Early One Morning’ heeft in het eerste deel een opzwepend karakter. De wending naar mid tempo is goed. Het ruwe randje op de zang komt extra goed tot zijn recht. Tempo en volume gaan weer omhoog. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk klinkt de blues rock heerlijk vintage. De wendingen verlopen geleidelijk, de opbouw van dit nummer is zeer goed.

‘Death Letter Blues’ heeft een prima intro. De rest van het nummer luistert ook aangenaam weg. Het langste nummer is voor het laatst bewaard. De opbouw naar het einde wordt wat langer gerekt, heerlijk!

Voor je het weet is deze EP, met zes nummers alweer afgelopen. De inspiratie komt van ver uit de vorige eeuw. De oude blues blijft inspireren. De versies van Black Stone Cherry hebben me niet omvergeblazen. De energie is anders dan op de cd’s met hun eigen nummers. Toch is ‘Black to the Blues volume 2’ een heel aardig album.

Black Stone Cherry – Black to the Blues volume 2

In a few years’ time, the American rock band Black Stone Cherry will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Black to the Blues volume 2‘ is their second album with covers. On this EP they pay tribute to Howlin’ Wolf, and Son House, among others.

Automatically, you will tap with your feet, during the intro of ‘Big Legged Woman‘. The first few seconds are different, then you can clearly hear the similarities but also the differences with the original by Freddie King. The slightly rough vocals fit perfectly with the music. The guitar playing is well distributed over the headphones.
The piano playing is well added. The instrumental piece is delicious, it is rougher than the original, but that fits Black Stone Cherry. They have made a very own, exciting version of it. This one ends quite suddenly, nicely done!

As expected, the version of ‘Me & The Devil Blues‘ by these guys is a lot heavier than the original by Robert Johnson. The mid-tempo creates a wonderful flow. In the background you can hear electronic sounds. The balance between guitars and bass is fine. The volume of the drums is a bit on the soft side in relation to the total sound for a while. The whole sounds nice, again the keyboard work is positive. There is a delicious portion of drumming in the build-up to the end.

Also ‘All Your Love (I Miss Loving)‘ has been covered countless times, among others by Gary Moore. This cover by Black Stone Cherry also starts in mid-tempo, but with its own version.
The instrumental piece is old skool blues and pleasantly exciting, and it stays that way for a while, even when the vocals are added. The changes in tempo flow into each other. Too bad that the end is slowly turned away.

‘Down In The Bottom‘ in the version of Black Stone Cherry is also a bit more lively, and that’s how it should be.
‘Early One Morning‘ has an exciting character in the first movement. The turn to mid-tempo is good. The rough edge on the vocals comes into its own. Tempo and volume go up again. During the instrumental piece the blues rock sounds wonderfully vintage. The twists and turns are gradual, the structure of this song is very good.

‘Death Letter Blues‘ has an excellent intro. The rest of the song is also pleasant to listen to. The longest song has been saved for the last time. The build-up to the end is stretched a bit longer, wonderful!

Before you know it, this EP, with six songs, is over. The inspiration comes from far away from the last century. The old blues continues to inspire. The versions of Black Stone Cherry didn’t blow me away. The energy is different than on the CD’s with their own songs. Yet ‘Black to the Blues volume 2‘ is a very nice album.
