In oktober 2018 speelde Steve Hackett met zijn band in London’s Royal Festival Hall. Dat deed hij samen met het 42-koppige Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra! Hier werden vooral oude, bekende nummers van Genesis gespeeld. Want deze worden nog altijd gewaardeerd door fans van alle leeftijden.
Alle cd’s, ook de live-cd’s van Steve Hackett zijn fantastisch, zo niet perfect van kwaliteit. Dat verwachten de fans natuurlijk ook voor dit dubbelalbum.
Aan het begin van ‘Dance on a Volcano’ hoor je dat de kwaliteit ook nu goed is, al is het niet perfect. Het geluid is minder warm dan we gewend zijn van Steve. De lichter gespeelde delen zijn minder helder en sprankelend, de rockende delen klinken niet perfect vol.
Het wolvengehuil van ‘Out of the Body’ komt goed tot zijn recht, de muziek neemt je meteen in beslag. Het intro van ‘The Steppes’ kruipt onder mijn huid. Dit blijft het hele ingetogen stuk zo. De lagere tonen raken me net iets minder dan gehoopt. De details in de muziek zijn op de achtergrond te horen. Het gitaarspel is fenomenaal. En natuurlijk is het nummer fantastisch opgebouwd. Dit ‘nieuwere’ nummer (Wolflight 2015) vormt een prima match met het ‘oudje ’Firth of Fifth’. Het pianospel van deze epic is mooi sprankelend. Alle wendingen worden goed gespeeld. Alles is van begin tot en met het einde fantastisch gezongen en gespeeld. Zodoende gaat het genieten door in nummers zoals ‘Dancing with the Moonlit Knight’ en natuurlijk ‘Shadow of the Hierophant’. Een live uitvoering van dit nummer is altijd indrukwekkend, vooral door de hoge, heldere zang van gitariste Amanda Lehmann. Fluitspel dwarrelt hier mooi doorheen. Weer is het gitaarspel om van te smullen. En dat geldt ook voor de gehele band en het orkest. Dit is een goede afsluiter van de eerste cd.
CD 2
‘In that Quiet Earth’ komt net als ’Shadow of the Hierophant’ van het achtste studioalbum Wind & Wuthering. (Dit was het tweede album waarin Phil Collins de zang voor zijn rekening nam). Ook hier is de balans tussen band en orkest prima, de hectiek in dit nummer wordt mooi uitgevoerd. Nad Sylvan neemt de zang voor zijn rekening in ‘Afterglow’. Zijn zachtaardige en gevoelige stem past bij het nummer. Met zijn gepassioneerde manier van zingen weet hij mij te raken.
‘Serpentine Song’ is aanvankelijk wat zoet van opzet. Het fluitspel is liefelijk, dit nummer blijft vriendelijk van aard. Het klein gespeelde deel op het einde is prachtig.
Het klassieke georiënteerde intro van ‘El Niño’ neemt je als het ware gevangen. De rockende elementen worden er prachtig in verweven. De afwisseling en de samenwerking tussen klassiek en rock is super. Dat is één van de redenen waarom Steve nog steeds zo’n grote schare fans heeft.
De lange epic ‘Supper’s Ready’ mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Nad zingt met bezieling. De instrumentale stukken zijn complex, maar zeer goed gespeeld. Dat geldt ook voor de kleine, ingetogen gezongen en/of gespeelde delen. Ook al duurt dit nummer bijna een half uur. Het is ear candy van begin tot het eind.
‘The Musical Box’ is het ‘toetje’. Het eerste deel is klein, maar dit nummer verloopt gaandeweg als een ‘grande dessert’. In plaats van een smaak explosie, vliegen de muzieknoten je om te oren. Natuurlijk zijn er hier ook volop wendingen. Kortom, er komt heel veel lekkers voorbij.
Op de cd’s lopen de nummers zo goed als non-stop door. Hierdoor kun je, zonder gezellige praatjes, aan één stuk door genieten.
Hoewel Steve eerder live albums gemaakt die grenzen aan de perfectie van geluidskwaliteit is ‘Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live’ toch zeer goed. Diverse nummers verschenen al eerder op onder andere ‘Wuthering nights: Live in Birmingham’ (2018). Storend is dat totaal niet, want deze nummers zijn nog altijd geliefd bij de fans.

Steve Hackett – Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live
In October 2018 Steve Hackett played with his band in London’s Royal Festival Hall. He did this together with the 42-headed Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra! Old, well-known songs by Genesis were mainly played here. Because these are still appreciated by fans of all ages.
All of Steve Hackett’s CDs, including his live CDs, are fantastic, if not of perfect quality. That’s what the fans expect for this double album.
At the beginning of ‘Dance on a Volcano‘ you can hear that the quality is good, even though it is not perfect. The sound is not as warm as we are used to from Steve. The lighter parts are less clear and sparkling, the rocking parts don’t sound perfectly full.
The wolf cry of ‘Out of the Body‘ comes into its own, the music immediately seizes you. The intro of ‘The Steppes‘ gets under my skin. This remains the case for the whole modest piece. The lower tones touch me a little less than I hoped for. The details in the music can be heard in the background. The guitar playing is phenomenal. And of course, the song has a fantastic structure. This ‘newer’ song (Wolflight 2015) is a great match with the ‘old’ Firth of Fifth‘. The piano playing of this epic is beautifully sparkling. All twists and turns are played well. Everything is fantastically sung and played from beginning to end. So, the enjoyment continues in songs like ‘Dancing with the Moonlit Knight‘ and of course ‘Shadow of the Hierophant‘. A live performance of this song is always impressive, especially because of the high, clear vocals of guitarist Amanda Lehmann. Flute play flutters through it nicely. Again, it is guitar playing that you can enjoy. And that goes for the whole band and the orchestra as well. This is a good ending to the first CD.
CD 2
In that ‘Quiet Earth‘ comes just like ‘Shadow of the Hierophant‘ from the eighth studio album Wind & Wuthering. (This was the second album in which Phil Collins took care of the vocals). Also, here the balance between band and orchestra is fine, the hectic in this song is nicely performed. Nad Sylvan takes care of the vocals in ‘Afterglow‘. His gentle and sensitive voice matches the song. With his passionate way of singing he knows how to touch me.
‘Serpentine Song‘ is a bit sweet at first. The flute playing is lovely, this song remains friendly in nature. The small part played at the end is beautiful.
The classical intro of ‘El Niño‘ captivates you, as it were. The rocking elements are beautifully interwoven into it. The variety and the collaboration between classical and rock is super. That’s one of the reasons why Steve still has such a large fan base.
The long epic ‘Supper’s Ready‘ is a necessity. Nad sings with inspiration. The instrumental pieces are complex, but very well played. The same goes for the small, modestly sung and/or played parts. Even though this song lasts almost half an hour. It is ear candy from beginning to end.
‘The Musical Box‘ is the ‘dessert’. The first part is small, but this song gradually turns out to be a ‘grande dessert’. Instead of a taste explosion, the musical notes ‘fly to your ears’. Of course there are also plenty of twists and turns here. In short, a lot of goodies come along.
On the CDs the songs run almost non-stop. This allows you, without cozy talk, to enjoy at one piece.
Although Steve previously made live albums that border on the perfection of sound quality ‘Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live‘ is still very good. Several songs appeared earlier on ‘Wuthering nights: Live in Birmingham’ (2018). That’s not annoying at all, because these songs are still loved by the fans.
