Ray Wilson (ex Genesis, ex Stiltskin) is een bezige bij. Naast het vele touren, brengt hij met grote regelmaat nieuwe albums uit. Ongeveer een jaar geleden bracht hij ‘ZDF @ Bauhaus‘ een live album uit. Nu is het weer tijd voor een studio album. Op ‘Upon my life’ staan maar een twee nieuwe nummers. Het album bestaat uit een echt boekje met harde kaft, de print op de beide cd’s sluit mooi aan bij het artwork.

Het eerste nummer, ‘Come The End Of The World’ is één van de nieuwe nummers. Deze heeft een rustige start met zang en piano. De woorden die Ray zingt, zijn liefdevol van toon. Na een wending komen de drums erbij, dit brengt een vleugje pop. Dit gaat over naar poprock. Dit nummer eindigt met een fade out. Qua stijl sluit dit nummer aan bij zijn recentere studio albums (‘Song For A Friend’, en ‘Makes Me Think Of Home’).

‘Take it slow’ is een nummer waarin de overtuigende zang van Ray goed tot zijn recht komt. De muziek bevat veel laagjes, waaronder prachtig saxofoonspel. De strijkinstrumenten zijn wat meer op de achtergrond, maar vormen een prachtige aanvulling. De vertraging voor het einde is fantastisch.
In het instrumentale intro van ‘Ought To Be Resting’ komen pianoklanken en de strijkers naar voren. Door de drums krijgt ook dit nummer een poppy wending. Dit zorgt voor een toegankelijke structuur. Het heerlijke gitaarspel geeft een vleugje pit.

Alle nummers bevatten mooie, en/of opvallende stukken. Ik noem er een paar: De strijkinstrumenten in ‘Constantly Reminded’ smelten mooi samen met de rockende delen. Dit nummer eindigt prachtig klein.
Het geweldige saxofoonspel van Marcin Kajper komt bijvoorbeeld in ‘Wait For Better Days’ naar de voorgrond. ’Bless me’ heeft een apart, maar mooi intro. Dat wordt door Tesiree Priti Kaitesi prima aangevuld met haar mooie stem prima aangevuld. Haar stem en manier van zingen past bij het geheel. Tijdens een rockend deel wordt het geluid iets stoerder van sound. Zo nu en dan komt de woordeloze zang van Tesiree erbij.

De toegankelijke structuur maakt dat de teksten je niet intens raken. Het geheel luistert makkelijk weg. Toch zit de muziek ingewikkelder in elkaar dan dat lijkt. Dat komt onder andere door het aantal laagjes in de muziek. Bovendien bevat de muziek best veel details, sommige hoor je na een paar keer luisteren.
Rustige delen worden afgewisseld met stukken met meer rock, dan wel poppy elementen.

CD 2
Ook cd 2 begint met een nieuw nummer. ‘I Wait And I Pray’ heeft een mix van zoet en melancholie in zich. De stem van Ray vormt een mooi blend met die van Gosia Mielch. Het akoestisch gitaarspel en pianoklanken zijn eerst wat meer op de voorgrond, vervolgens mengen ze zich prima met het geheel. Dan is het één wat meer op de voorgrond, dan het ander. In dit ingetogen, langzame nummer zijn geen drums te horen.

‘Another Day’ is een oude bekende, maar deze versie is veel kleiner gespeeld dan we gewend zijn. Hier is er voor ingetogen percussie gekozen in plaats van het drumstel. Dat geeft deze versie iets heel speciaals.
‘She’s A Queen’ komt oorspronkelijk van het album ‘Chasing Rainbows’ uit 2013. Ondanks de rust in dit nummer, zijn er heel wat laagjes, waaronder diverse strijkinstrumenten. Enkele pianonoten worden heel subtiel erdoor gestrooid. Dit is een cd om heel om je gemak naar te luisteren tijdens een ‘chill-uurtje’

Het rustige intro van ‘Ever the reason’ heeft mij al in de eerste seconden in zijn greep. Dit is een oudje uit 2004, en komt van cd ‘The Next best thing’.
Ook hier valt het akoestisch gitaarspel positief op. Langzaam komt er een vleugje rock bij. De achtergrondzang is wat zoet in vergelijking met de rest.
De iets groezelige sound past niet zo goed bij het geheel.
Hierna volgen nog een aantal bekende, geliefde nummers. Zoals ‘First day of change’, dit is en blijft een super nummer. Het bevat meeslepende passages en fantastisch gitaarspel, heerlijke bas grooves en het drumwerk is in een aangename flow.

Op beide cd’s staan 14 nummers. Hoewel ze genoeg van elkaar verschillen, zijn er ook overeenkomsten. Best veel nummers hebben een rustig intro en een iets poppy/poprock vervolg. Een aantal nummers eindigen in een fade out. Anderen hebben een mooi gecomponeerd einde.
Zijn ‘vaste’ band bestaat onder andere uit bassist Lawrie Mac Millan en de gitaristen Ali Ferguso en Steve Wilson. Daarnaast werd Ray bijgestaan door een groot aantal (gast)muzikanten. Dit zijn er te veel om op te noemen. Samen zorgen ze regelmatig voor een groot aantal laagjes in zang en muziek. Doordat nummers bekend zijn, bleven grote verrassingen uit. Toch is het mooi om te horen dat een aantal van die oudere nummers nu in een andere versie te horen zijn.

Ray Wilson – Upon my life

Ray Wilson (ex Genesis, ex Stiltskin) is a busy bee. Besides touring a lot, he regularly releases new albums. About a year ago he released ‘ZDF @ Bauhaus‘ a live album. Now it’s time for a studio album. On ‘Upon my life‘ there are only two new songs. The album comes with a real booklet with a hard cover, the print on both CD’s fits in nicely with the artwork.

The first song, ‘Come The End Of The World‘ is one of the new songs. This one has a quiet start with vocals and piano. The words Ray sings are lovingly in tone. After a twist the drums are added, this brings a touch of pop. This goes over to poprock. This song ends with a fade out. In terms of style, this song is in line with his more recent studio albums (‘Song For A Friend‘, and ‘Makes Me Think Of Home‘).

‘Take it slow‘ is a song in which Ray’s convincing vocals come into their own. The music contains many layers, including beautiful saxophone playing. The string instruments are more in the background, but are a beautiful addition. The slowdown before the end is fantastic.
In the instrumental intro of ‘Ought To Be Resting‘ piano sounds and strings come to the fore. Due to the drums this song gets a poppy twist as well. This provides an accessible structure. The wonderful guitar playing gives a touch of spice.

All songs contain beautiful, and/or striking pieces. I will mention a few of them: The stringed instruments in ‘Constantly Reminded‘ merge nicely with the rocking parts. This song ends beautifully small.
Marcin Kajper’s great saxophone playing comes to the fore in ‘Wait For Better Days‘, for example. ‘Bless me‘ has a special, but beautiful intro. Tesiree Priti Kaitesi complements this perfectly with her beautiful voice. Her voice and way of singing fits the whole. During a rocking part the sound becomes a bit tougher. Every now and then the wordless vocals of Tesiree are added.

The accessible structure means that the lyrics do not touch you intensely. The whole thing listens easily. Yet the music is more complicated than it seems. This is partly due to the number of layers in the music. Moreover, the music contains quite a lot of details, some of which you can hear after listening to it a few times.
Quiet parts are alternated with parts with more rock or poppy elements.

CD 2
Also cd 2 starts with a new song. ‘I Wait And I Pray‘ has a mix of sweet and melancholy in it. Ray’s voice is a beautiful blend with Gosia Mielch’s. The acoustic guitar playing and piano sounds are first more in the foreground, then they mix well with the whole. Then one is a bit more in the foreground than the other. There are no drums to be heard in this subdued, slow song.

‘Another Day‘ is an old favourite, but this version is played much quieter than we are used to. Here is chosen for subdued percussion instead of the drums. That gives this version something very special.
‘She’s A Queen‘ is originally from the album ‘Chasing Rainbows’ from 2013. Despite the quietness in this song, there are a lot of layers, including various string instruments. Some piano notes are very subtly scattered through it. This is a CD for your comfort to listen to during a ‘chill hour’.

The quiet intro of ‘Ever the reason‘ has me in its grip from the first seconds. This is an old one from 2004, and comes from CD ‘The Next best thing’.
Here, too, the acoustic guitar playing stands out positively. Slowly a touch of rock is added. The background vocals are a bit sweet compared to the rest.
The somewhat grubby sound doesn’t fit the whole thing very well.
This is followed by a number of well-known, beloved songs. Like ‘First day of change‘, this is and remains a great song. It contains compelling passages and fantastic guitar playing, wonderful bass grooves and the drumming is in a pleasant flow.

Both CD’s contain 14 songs. Although they differ enough from each other, there are also similarities. Quite a lot of songs have a quiet intro and a slightly poppy/pop sequel. Some songs end in a fade out. Others have a nicely composed ending. His ‘regular’ band consists of bassist Lawrie Mac Millan and guitarists Ali Ferguso and Steve Wilson. Ray was also assisted by a large number of (guest) musicians. There are too many of them to mention. Together they regularly provide a large number of layers in vocals and music. Because songs are known, there were no big surprises. Still it is nice to hear that some of those older songs can now be heard in a different version.
