‘For All We Know’ is the project of guitarist Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation). ‘By Design Or By’ hides some “easter eggs”: A few melodies from his two previous albums can be heard here in renewed form. The lyrics deal with a young man’s relationships: with his parents, lovers and with his own children. The album is becoming more beautiful as the story progresses. ‘Goodby’ (with melancholic piano playing) is clearly the final track. Singer Wudstik sings with various emotions, such as frustration, despair and resignation. Metal and lightly played parts alternate. But the contrasts don’t always touch me. When there are many layers in music and vocals, not everything really comes into its own. Very occasionally, the (wordless) background vocals and added sounds are just a bit too much. Of course, there is a lot of fabulous (mainly) electric guitar playing. The rhythm section is very good. The more often you listen, the more new things you hear. ‘By Design Or By Disaster’ needs some time to grow.

‘For All We Know’ is het project van gitarist Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation). Op ‘By Design Or By zijn een aantal “easter eggs” verstopt: Een paar melodieën van zijn twee vorige albums zijn hier in vernieuwde vorm te horen. De teksten gaan de relaties van een jonge man: met zijn ouders, geliefden en met zijn eigen kinderen. Het album wordt mooier naarmate het verhaal vordert. ‘Goodby’ (met melancholisch pianospel) is duidelijk het laatste nummer. Zanger Wudstik zingt met diverse emoties, zoals frustratie, wanhoop en berusting. Metal en licht gespeelde delen wisselen elkaar af. Maar de contrasten raken me niet altijd. Als er veel laagjes in muziek en zang zijn, komt niet alles goed tot zijn recht. Heel af en toe zijn de (woordeloze) achtergrondzang en de toegevoegde geluiden net iets te veel. Natuurlijk is er veel gaaf (voornamelijk) elektrisch gitaarspel. De ritmesectie is zeer goed. Hoe vaker je luistert hoe meer nieuwe dingen je hoort. ‘By Design Or By Disaster’ moet wel even groeien.
