Early January, Magnum’s guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin passed away. The release of ‘Here Comes the Rain was scheduled for the following week. The band decided to release their 23rd studio album as usual. On this varied album, you will hear rock (‘n’ roll), slightly sugary, melodic and tender songs. Light classical elements return several times. Sometimes the lyrics make you think. Bob Catley regularly manages to touch me with his voice. The (background) vocals and the music are in balance, the instruments reinforcing each other. The guest musicians on trumpet and saxophone (a.o. The Seventh Darkness’) are a fine addition. Occasionally, there are quite a lot of layers and/or details in the music, so several times you hear something new. The ten accessible songs are well composed. It was super that fans could enjoy Tony’s great guitar skills for more than fisty years. Hats off to all the ear candy. Music gives comfort, that certainly applies to ‘Here Comes the Rain’.

Begin januari overleed Magnum’s gitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin. De release van ‘Here Comes the Rain stond voor de week erna gepland. De band besloot hun 23e studio album gewoon uit te brengen. Op dit gevarieerde album hoor je rock (’n’ roll), licht zoete, melodische en gevoelige nummers. Licht klassieke elementen keren diverse malen terug. De teksten zetten je soms aan het denken. Bob Catley weet me regelmatig te raken met zijn stem. De (achtergrond) zang en de muziek zijn in balans, de instrumenten onderling versterken elkaar. De gastmuzikanten op trompet en saxofoon (o.a. The Seventh Darkness’) zijn een prima aanvulling. Af en toe zijn er best veel laagjes en/of details in de muziek, waardoor je “steeds” iets nieuws hoort. De tien toegankelijke nummers zijn goed opgebouwd. Het was super dat de fans ruim vijftig jaar mochten genieten van het geweldige gitaarspel van Tony. Petje af voor al de “ear candy”. Muziek geeft troost, dat geldt zeker voor ’Here Comes the Rain’.
