Prog rock liefhebbers weten dat zanger/multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse een diepgelovig man is. Dat juist hij met een rockopera komt waarin het leven van Jezus beschreven wordt, is niet verwonderlijk. Voor de niet gelovige fans zal het misschien even afwachten zijn of het Christendom op het dubbelalbum ‘Jesus Christ – The Exorcist’ niet te veel op de voorgrond treedt.
CD 1
Het instrumentale ‘Introduction’ duurt een minuut, maar deze filmische start klinkt veel belovend! In ‘Overture’, raakt ‘Jesus’ (Ted Leonard) mij al snel met zijn gevoelige stem. In ‘Getaway’ zorgt de gitaar voor een portie rock. Dit wordt afgewisseld met sprankelende muziek. Zowel de dialoog als de samenzang zijn fantastisch.
‘Gather The People’ is wat vrolijker van opzet qua muziek. Dit wordt prima ondersteund door de koorzang. Matt Smith vervult de rol van ‘John the Baptist’. Dit doet hij vol overtuiging. Zelfs als je niks of weinig hebt met het Christendom is de verhaallijn duidelijk.
Vooral in ‘Jesus’ Baptism’ is de koorzang super. Ieder nummer is anders, toch vormen ze een eenheid. Tot nu toe waren de nummers wat kort voor prog. Maar ‘Jesus’ Temptation’ is een epic van ruim tien minuten. In het eerste uitgebreide instrumentale stuk klinkt chaos door, toch blijft de harmonie intact. De vertraging is geweldig, de strijkers zorgen voor een somber tintje. De woorden van ‘Jesus’ komen extra binnen. De balans tussen rock en klassieke muziek blijft. Het duet tussen ‘Jesus’ en ‘The Devil’ is indrukwekkend, beide zingen met bezieling. De opbouw naar het klein gespeeld einde uitmuntend.
Het vrolijke gevoel komt terug in ‘There’s A Highway’. Dit komt niet alleen door de lichtere en opzwepende muziek, maar ook door het snufje gospel wat er in verweven zit. De achtergrondzang is misschien een beetje zoet. Pittige orgelklanken en gitaarspel zorgen ervoor dat het geheel niet te zoet wordt. ‘The Woman Of Seven Devils’ start vrij langzaam, er klinkt verleiding in door. Talon David heeft de rol van ‘Mary’. Ze heeft een behoorlijke power op haar stem. De klassieke elementen van de strijkers smelten mooi samen met de overige muziek.
‘Free At Last’ is een vrij klein en ingetogen nummer. Tijdens de monoloog van ‘Mary’ laat Talon horen hoe veelzijdig haar stem is.
Een vleugje Spock’s Beard is te horen in ‘The Madman Of The Gadarenes’, de meerstemmige zang van de ‘Demons’ mengt zich goed met de strakke stukken muziek. Het geluid is zeer goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon.
Het klein gespeeld en gezongen stuk in ‘The Keys To The Kingdom’ kruipt onder mijn huid. Des te verrassender is ‘Get Behind Me Satan’, dit heeft wat gelijkenissen met ‘Paranoid’ van Black Sabbath.
CD 2
‘He Must Go To The Cross’ start met a capella zang, de klankkleur hiervan is bijzonder. Dat komt door de markante stemmen van ‘Caiaphas’ (Jake Livgren), en door Wil Morse, die ook ‘Pharisee 1’ verwoordt. Multi-instrumentalist Eric Gillette drumt hier krachtig en strak, passend bij zang en muziek. De vocale power uithalen van ‘Caiaphas’ zijn buitengewoon.
In ‘Jerusalem’ klinkt het geluid van het tokkelen op de snaren van de strijkinstrumenten, ik verwacht een hele opbouw, maar dit nummer duurt slechts 38 seconden.
‘Jesus’ zingt de woorden in ‘The Last Supper’ zó geloofwaardig dat je nog verder wordt meegenomen in het verhaal. De zin
“So go do what you must do nooow”
snijdt door je ziel. Maar ook het verraad van ‘Judas’ draagt bij aan de emotie.
De (verschillende) emoties gaan door in ‘Gethsemane’, steeds word je geraakt. Door de uitzonderlijke combinatie van zang en muziek heeft ‘Jesus Before The Council And Peter’s Denial’ filmische allure. De zang in ‘Judas’ Death’ is wederom prachtig. Bovendien is er een perfecte mix van rock en klassiek, zelfs de rusten zijn subliem.
Het intro van ‘Jesus Before Pilate And The Crucifixion’ voelt aan als macabere marsmuziek. De combinatie van muziek, zang en emotie is top. De roep:
“Crucify Him”
bezorgt kippenvel. Ook in ‘Mary At The Tomb’ is de emotie voelbaar.
Dit loopt door in ‘The Greatest Love Of All’. Het duet tussen Mary en Jesus is zeer goed, ook hun stemmen samen vormen een voortreffelijke blend.
‘Love Has Called My Name (Reprise)’ is het laatste nummer. Dit is in eerste instantie wat korter en minder spectaculair dan verwacht. Na de tweede keer luisteren besef je dat dit echt goed gekozen is.
Deze theatrale rockopera verdient het om live uitgevoerd te worden. Natuurlijk moet hier dan een live-cd met dvd van komen. Dit zal een giga klus zijn die aan het onmogelijke grenst. Dit imposante album is nergens over de top, het evenwicht tussen (samen) zang en muziek is geniaal. Beide cd’s zijn zeer divers qua zang en muziek. De muziek staat bijna bol van de details, steeds hoor je weer nieuwe dingen. Veel nummers lopen in elkaar over, alles voelt als één geheel. Door het verhaal is het misschien iets minder toegankelijk dan zijn andere albums. Toch zal het ook de niet Christenen waarschijnlijk raken. Neal Morse heeft gedaan wat van hem werd verwacht: Jesus Christ – The Exorcist is fantastisch geworden!

CD 1
The instrumental ‘Introduction‘ takes a minute, but this filmic start sounds very promising! In ‘Overture‘, ‘Jesus‘ (Ted Leonard) soon touches me with his sensitive voice. In ‘Getaway‘ the guitar provides a portion of rock. This is interspersed with sparkling music. Both the dialogue and the harmony singing are fantastic.
Gather The People‘ is a bit more cheerful in terms of music. This is well supported by the choir vocals. Matt Smith fulfils the role of ‘John the Baptist‘. He does this with conviction. Even if you have little or nothing to do with Christianity, the storyline is clear.
Especially in ‘Jesus’ Baptism‘ the choral singing is super. Every song is different, yet they form a unity. Until now the songs were a bit short for prog. But ‘Jesus’ Temptation‘ is an epic of more than ten minutes. In the first extensive instrumental piece chaos sounds through, yet the harmony remains intact. The delay is great, the strings add a gloomy touch. The words of ‘Jesus‘ come in extra. The balance between rock and classical music remains. The duet between ‘Jesus‘ and ‘The Devil‘ is impressive, both sing with passion. The build-up to the small played end is excellent.
The cheerful feeling is reflected in ‘There’s A Highway‘. This is not only because of the lighter and exciting music, but also because of the pinch of gospel that is interwoven in it. The background vocals may be a bit sweet. Spicy organ sounds and guitar play make sure that the whole thing doesn’t get too sweet. ‘The Woman Of Seven Devils‘ starts quite slowly, it sounds tempting. Talon David has the role of ‘Mary‘. She has a lot of power on her voice. The classical elements of the strings merge nicely with the rest of the music.
‘Free At Last‘ is a rather small and modest song. During the monologue of ‘Mary‘ Talon shows how versatile her voice is.
A touch of Spock’s Beard can be heard in ‘The Madman Of The Gadarenes‘, the polyphonic vocals of the ‘Demons‘ blend well with the tight pieces of music. The sound is very well distributed over the headphones.
The small piece played and sung in ‘The Keys To The Kingdom‘ gets under my skin. All the more surprising is ‘Get Behind Me Satan‘, this has some similarities with ‘Paranoid’ of Black Sabbath.

‘He Must Go To The Cross‘ starts with a cappella vocals, the timbre of which is special. This is due to the remarkable voices of ‘Caiaphas‘ (Jake Livgren), and by

In ‘Jerusalem‘ the sound of strumming on the strings of the stringed instruments sounds, I expect a whole build-up, but this song only lasts 38 seconds.
‘Jesus’ sings the words in ‘The Last Supper‘ so believable that you will be taken even further in the story. The sentence

cuts through your soul. But also the betrayal of ‘Judas‘ contributes to the emotion.
The (different) emotions continue in ‘Gethsemane‘, you are always touched. Jesus Before The Council And Peter’s Denial‘ has a cinematic allure due to the exceptional combination of vocals and music. The vocals in ‘Judas’ Death‘ are again beautiful. On top of that there is a perfect mix of rock and classical, even the musical rests are sublime.
The intro of ‘Jesus Before Pilate And The Crucifixion‘ feels like macabre marching music. The combination of music, vocals and emotion is great. The call:
“Crucify Him”
gives you goose bumps. Also in ‘Mary At The Tomb‘ the emotion is to be felt.
This continues in ‘The Greatest Love Of All‘. The duet between Mary and Jesus is very good, also their voices together form an excellent blend.
Love Has Called My Name (Reprise)‘ is the last song. At first this is a bit shorter and less spectacular than expected. After the second listen you realize that this is really a good choice.
This theatrical rock opera deserves to be performed live. Of course a live-cd with dvd is needed. This will be a huge job that reaches the impossible. This impressive album is nowhere over the top, the balance between (combined) vocals and music is ingenious. Both CDs are very diverse in vocals and music. The music is almost full of details, always you hear new things. Many songs run into another, everything feels like a unified whole. The story is perhaps a little less accessible than other albums. Still, it will probably be the non-Christians as well. Neal Morse has done what he was supposed to do: Jesus Christ – The Exorcist has become fantastic!
