Karibow is een Duitse neo prog band, in 1996 opgericht door zanger/multi-instrumentalist Oliver Rüsing. Jarenlang was dit hoofdzakelijk een one-man project. Langzaam maar zeker is daar verandering ingekomen. Er deden diverse gastmuzikanten/vocalisten mee op zijn (latere) albums. Een vaste live band was er nog niet. Daar lijkt nu verandering in te komen, want er staat een tour gepland: the MOnuMENTO tour. De kick-off vond plaats in ’t Blok, of wel Prog Frog, in Nieuwekerk aan de IJssel. Dit was tevens de release party van het album ‘Supernatural Foe- ‘Rebirth’, (kortweg ‘Rebirth’) dat op hier voor het eerst te koop was.
Op deze warme zondagmiddag, 30 juni was de zaal behoorlijk goed gevuld. Karibow stond voor het eerst op de Nederlandse planken. Na een welkomstwoord van één van de medewerkers van Prog Frog, kwamen de bandleden één voor één op. Er werd begonnen met ‘Intro/The Raining Silence’ van het album ‘MOnuMENTO’, uit 2018. Nu kwam Oliver tevoorschijn, hij droeg een prachtige outfit. Fans kenden dit nummer natuurlijk, een enkeling zong zachtjes mee.

Holophinium
In ‘Remember’ ging een enkele zin, waarbij Oliver’s stem de hoogte in ging, niet helemaal perfect. In’ E.G.O.’ van ‘Holophinium’ (2016) kon je zien dat Oliver de muziek voelde, er klonk emotie in zijn stem. Dat onderstreepte hij door zijn fysieke en gezichtsexpressie. Het publiek luisterde ademloos naar dit prachtige, lange nummer.
Door het oogcontact tussen de bandleden onderling kon je zien dat ze goed op elkaar ingespeeld waren. Tempo- en volumewisselingen werden zeer goed gespeeld. Natuurlijk voelde Oliver zich thuis op de bühne. Ook Felix Jäger voelde zich comfortabel op het podium. Heel relaxed, maar gedreven, hanteerde hij zijn bas. Toen gitarist Philipp Dauenhauer opkwam, zag je dat hij zenuwachtig was. Zijn nervositeit was langzaam verdwenen, maar hij leek nog wat onwennig op het podium. Drummer Gerald Nahrgang en toetsenist Guido Seifert speelden rustig, maar prima. Het was bloedheet in ’t Blok en Oliver had zijn lange jas en gilet uit gedaan. Ook in zijn fraaie oranje blouse had hij het erg warm. Warm of niet, Oliver gaf zich helemaal.

Rebirth
‘Is That You?’ was het eerste nummer dat van het nieuwe album ‘Supernatural Foe- Rebirth’ gespeeld werd. Dit was het eerste album dat Oliver ooit opnam. Alles heeft hij opnieuw opgenomen, vandaar de toevoeging ‘Rebirth’. Weer viel het goede staaltje gitaarwerk van Philipp op. Zijn manier van spelen was bescheiden, maar bevlogen.
Het was jammer dat Oliver in ‘District of Dignity’ de aanwezigen niet aanmoedigde om mee te zingen. Iets meer interactie met de fans had wel gemogen. Tussen de bandleden had er ook meer interactie mogen zijn, dan was het visueel aantrekkelijker geweest. Natuurlijk mogen we niet vergeten dat dit de eerste show was die deze mannen samen speelden. Technisch was alles goed tot zeer goed gespeeld. De performance komt gaandeweg zeker goed.
Gerald kroop achter zijn drumkit vandaan, en pakte zijn akoestische bas. Oliver bespeelde zijn 12 snarige akoestische gitaar. Samen met Philipp speelden ze een akoestische set. Tijdens ‘Home of Cain’ was het publiek bijna muisstil. Her en der werd er zacht en respectvol meegezongen. Zo kwam dit nummer goed tot zijn recht. ‘Passion’ is een rocknummer van het album ‘From here to the impossible’. Oliver zong zeer geloofwaardig. De akoestische versie was verrassend, maar indrukwekkend. Dat toonde de veelzijdigheid van Karibow aan. Ook van ‘Believe’ werd een akoestische versie gebracht. Nu vroeg Oliver wel om mee te zingen. Op zijn commando zong men ‘Oe hoe hoe’ mee. Hierna was het tijd voor een korte pauze.

Unchosen
In ‘The North Wall Tale’ speelde Philipp de sterren van de hemel. Met zijn hoofd in zijn nek leek hij de wereld om zich heen te vergeten. Onvoorstelbaar dat zo’n goede gitarist zo weinig live heeft gespeeld.

Voor ‘Back to the Ashes’, van het album ‘Unchosen’ (ook uit 2018) verscheen Oliver in een zwart gewaad met capuchon en een zwart masker. Zijn ‘ogen’ lichtten zo nu en dan rood op. Het podium was bijna geheel in het donker gehuld, zodat je nauwelijks meer zag dan zijn rode ogen. Zo stond hij achter zijn E-pads te drummen en te zingen. Sfeer en muziek waren mysterieus. Het complete plaatje, zowel om naar te luisteren als naar te kijken was majestueus. Knap gedaan voor een low budget band! Helemaal omdat dit naadloos overliep naar ‘Red Feathers’. Oliver leek even van het toneel verdwenen. Toen hij weer verscheen, had hij een vogelmasker op, zijn handen waren gehuld in rode vogelveren. De emotie op zijn stem plus de manier waarop hij bewoog hadden een betoverende werking.

Er volgde nog een aantal nummers. Waaronder ‘Private Babylon’. Het laatste nummer was het opzwepende ‘Change’. Hierna werd er volop “Zugaben!” geroepen. In zijn eentje imponeerde Oliver met het akoestische ‘Inorganic talk’. Hij zong en speelde met enorme bezieling. Na een tijdje kwam, onder luid applaus, de rest van de band op. Ze speelden eerst ingetogen, in lijn met het nummer. In één klap nam het volume toe, dit werd prachtig gespeeld.
‘The cry’ volgde, dit was echt het laatste nummer. Karibow speelde een gevarieerde set, waarbij je een mooie impressie kreeg van de fantastische albums die er de afgelopen jaren verschenen. Na het concert nam Karibow alle tijd om met de fans kennis te maken. Fans kunnen terugkijken op een bloedhete, maar passievolle kick of van de MOnuMENTO tour.

Karibow is a German neo prog band, founded in 1996 by singer/multi-instrumentalist Oliver Rüsing. For years this was mainly a one-man project. Slowly but surely this has changed. Several guest musicians/vocalists participated on his (later) albums. A regular live band wasn’t there yet. This seems to change now, because a tour is planned: the MOnuMENTO tour. This was also the release party of the album ‘Supernatural Foe- ‘Rebirth’, (in short ‘Rebirth’) that was for sale here for the first time.
On this warm Sunday afternoon, June 30th, the hall was pretty well filled. Karibow was on the Dutch stage for the first time. After a welcome by one of the employees of Prog Frog, the band members came up one by one. They started with ‘Intro/The Raining Silence’ from the album ‘MOnuMENTO‘, from 2018. Now Oliver came out, he was wearing a beautiful outfit. Fans knew this song of course, some of them sang along softly.

Holophinium
In ‘Remember‘ a single sentence, in which Oliver’s voice went up, was not entirely perfect. The audience listened breathlessly to this beautiful, long song.
Through the eye contact between the band members you could see that they were well attuned to each other. Changes in tempo and volume were played very well. Of course Oliver felt at home on stage. Felix Jäger also felt comfortable on stage. Very relaxed, but driven, he used his bass. When guitarist Philipp Dauenhauer came on stage, you saw that he was nervous. His nervousness had slowly disappeared, but he still seemed a bit uncomfortable on stage. Drummer Gerald Nahrgang and keyboard player Guido Seifert played quietly, but fine. It was very hot in ’t Blok and Oliver had taken off his long coat and waistcoat. He was also very warm in his beautiful orange blouse. Warm or not, Oliver gave himself completely.

Rebirth
Is That You‘ was the first song to be played from the new album ‘Supernatural Foe-Rebirth‘. This was the first album Oliver ever recorded. He re-recorded everything, hence the addition ‘Rebirth‘. Again the good example of Philipp’s guitar skills stood out. His way of playing was modest, but inspired.
It was a pity that Oliver in ‘District of Dignity‘ did not encourage those present to sing along. A little more interaction with the fans would have been possible. There could have been more interaction between the band members, so it would have been more visually attractive. Of course we shouldn’t forget that this was the first show these men played together. Technically everything was well to very well played. The performance will certainly be good over time.
Gerald crawled away from behind his drum kit, and grabbed his acoustic bass. Oliver played his 12-string acoustic guitar. Together with Philipp they played an acoustic set. During ‘Home of Cain‘ the audience was almost silent. Here and there they sang along softly and respectfully. So this song came into its own. Passion‘ is a rock song from the album ‘From here to the impossible‘. Oliver sang very believably. The acoustic version was surprising, but impressive. That showed the versatility of Karibow. An acoustic version of ‘Believe‘ was also released. Now Oliver did ask to sing along. On his command ‘Oe hoe hoe‘ was sung along. After this it was time for a short break.

Unchosen
In ‘The North Wall Tale‘ Philipp played the stars of heaven. With his head in his neck he seemed to forget the world around him. It is unbelievable that such a good guitarist has played so little live.

For ‘Back to the Ashes‘, from the album ‘Unchosen‘ (also from 2018) Oliver appeared in a black robe with a hood and a black mask. His ‘eyes’ occasionally lit up in red. The stage was almost completely shrouded in darkness, so you could hardly see more than his red eyes. So he stood behind his E-pads drumming and singing. Atmosphere and music were mysterious. The complete picture, both to listen to and to watch, was majestic. Well done for a low budget band! Especially since this went seamlessly to ‘Red Feathers‘. Oliver seemed to have disappeared from the stage for a while. When he appeared again, he had a bird mask on, his hands were wrapped in red bird feathers. The emotion on his voice and the way he moved had an enchanting effect.

A number of other songs followed. Including ‘Private Babylon‘. The last song was the exciting ‘Change‘. After this there was plenty of “Zugaben!” called. On his own Oliver impressed with the acoustic ‘Inorganic talk’. He sang and played with enormous inspiration. After a while, with loud applause, the rest of the band came up. At first they played modestly, in line with the song. In one blow the volume increased, this was played beautifully.
The cry‘ followed, this was really the last song. Karibow played a varied set, where you got a nice impression of the fantastic albums that have been released in recent years. After the concert Karibow took all the time to meet the fans. Fans can look back on a hot, but passionate kick or the MOnuMENTO tour.
