Doug Woods and Colin Powell release almost every year two (instrumental) albums. This time it took longer, as their previous album, ‘Cinematica‘, was released in August last year. Doug is a well-known name in the iOS/iPad music world and founder of ‘The Sound Testroom’ (available on Bandcamp and You Tube). Colin was inspired by one of Doug’s demos. Meanwhile, the men have been working together for over six years. ‘Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ is their latest digital album. This is a tribute to the classic prog rock of the late sixties and early seventies. Of course, Doug and Colin have added a lot of things.

‘And So It Begins’ has a quiet start, the sound of a metallic sounding instrument and the keys provide the melody. The slightly tinny sound of a cymbal provides the rhythm. When more ‘instruments’ are added, the atmosphere becomes almost summery. The turns flow into each other, the whole is well distributed over the headphones. The guitar playing is sometimes a bit overshadowed by the other instrumental sounds. After a rest, a classical oriented piece follows. You can hear the sound of sombre played string instruments, complemented by the lighter sound of wind instruments, among others. A few more rests and changes follow. In the percussion, you hear a variety of sounds, including woodblock and cymbals. Organ sounds and wonderful guitar play cannot be missed during this beautiful opening track. Parts of ‘Pathfinder’ tend towards the synthesizer sounds of the early 80s. The sound of various keyboard instruments play (until the nice dying end) the leading role. In ‘Harvester of Time’, organ sounds, keyboard sound and percussion are the main ingredients. Later on, piano sounds are added, with classical elements in the background. For a while, the piano sounds solo, then electro sounds are added. This song also has a nice ending.

The intro of ‘Keep the Light on’ is very quiet, but soon the tempo of the electronic sounds becomes quite high. The sound of what looks like a saxophone is added. All kinds of twists and turns flow into one another, and unnoticed there are sometimes quite a few layers and details. Like the sound of a flute in the last piece. Just before the end, this sound comes to the fore. An epic cannot be missed on an album like this, and the men have saved it for last. ‘Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ starts with the sound of speedily played string instruments. This is mixed with ‘flute playing’ and some sparkling piano/keyboard sounds. With every listen, you keep hearing new details. The special sound of rapidly played string instruments persists, feeling that only a few different notes are being played. That is the basis; beyond that, the twists and turns flow into one another. After a rest, the sound of strings gives way to slightly slower music. The music becomes even calmer, acoustic guitar playing is mixed with ‘flute playing’ and spherical music. The minimalist piece, about in the middle, is cool. Although the music is generally quite calm, there is quite a lot coming at you. Towards the end, my attention slips a little away. With minimalist music and added sounds, the title track ends on a lovely calm.

The songs have quite a few twists and turns, and unnoticed there are sometimes quite a few layers. There are parts where the tempo is a bit higher, but it is never bombastic. Rhythm and melody form a good harmony. Sometimes you hardly know which sound comes from where, but guitar, keyboard and iOS music go hand in hand. ‘Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ has plenty of unexpected elements but is surprisingly accessible.

Doug Woods en Colin Powell brengen bijna ieder jaar twee (instrumentale) albums uit. Deze keer duurde het langer, want hun vorige album ‘Cinematica’, kwam in augustus vorig jaar uit. Doug is een bekende uit de iOS/iPad muziekwereld en oprichter van ‘The Sound Testroom’ (te beluisteren op Bandcamp en You Tube). Colin werd door één van Doug’s demo’s geïnspireerd. Inmiddels werken de mannen al meer dan zes jaar samen. ‘Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ is hun nieuwste digitale album. Dit is een eerbetoon aan de classic prog rock van eind jaren zestig- begin jaren zeventig. Natuurlijk hebben Doug en Colin er van alles aan toegevoegd.

‘And So It Begins’ heeft een rustige start, het geluid van een metalen klankinstrument en de toetsen zorgen voor de melodie. Het iets blikkerige geluid van een cimbaal zorgt voor het ritme. Als er meerdere ‘instrumenten’ bijkomen, wordt de sfeer bijna zomers. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Het gitaarspel komt soms een beetje in het gedrang door de overige instrumentale geluiden. Na een ruime rust volgt een klassiek georiënteerd stuk. Je hoor onder andere het geluid van somber bespeelde strijkinstrumenten, aangevuld met het lichtere geluid van onder andere blaasinstrumenten. Er volgen nog enkele rusten en veranderingen. In de percussie hoor je een variatie aan geluiden, waaronder woodblock en cimbalen. Orgelklanken en heerlijk gitaarspel mogen natuurlijk niet ontbreken tijdens dit mooie openingsnummer.

Delen van ‘Pathfinder’ neigen wat meer naar de synthesizer geluiden van begin jaren ’80. Het geluid van diverse toetsinstrumenten spelen (tot en met het leuke wegstervend eind) de hoofdrol. In ‘Harvester of Time’ zijn orgelklanken, keyboard sound en percussie de hoofdingrediënten. Later komen daar pianoklanken bij, waarbij je op de achtergrond onder andere klassieke elementen hoort. Even klinkt de piano solo, dan worden er elektro geluidjes aan toe gevoegd. Ook dit nummer heeft een leuk einde.

Het intro van ’Keep the Light on’ is heel rustig, maar snel wordt het tempo van de elektronische klanken flink hoog. Het geluid van wat lijkt op een saxofoon wordt toegevoegd. Allerlei wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, en ongemerkt zijn er soms best veel laagjes en details. Zoals het geluid van een fluit in het laatste stuk. Vlak voor het einde komt dit geluid goed naar voren.

Een epic mag op een album als dit natuurlijk niet ontbreken, en die hebben de mannen voor het laatst bewaard. ’Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ start met het geluid van snel bespeelde strijkinstrumenten. Dit wordt gemend met ‘fluitspel’, en enkele sprankelende piano/keyboard klanken. Bij iedere luisterbeurt hoor je steeds nieuwe details. Het bijzondere geluid van snel bespeelde strijkinstrumenten blijft aanhouden, gevoelsmatig worden er maar een paar verschillende noten gespeeld. Dat is de basis, daarbuiten vloeien de wendingen in elkaar over. Na een rust heeft het geluid van strijkinstrumenten plaats gemaakt voor iets langzamere muziek. De muziek wordt nog rustiger, akoestisch gitaarspel wordt vermengd met ‘fluitspel’ en sferische muziek. Het minimalistische stukje, ongeveer in het midden, is gaaf. Hoewel de muziek over het algemeen vrij kalm is, komt er best veel op je af. Richting het einde verslapt mijn aandacht een beetje. Met minimalistische muziek en toegevoegde geluiden eindigt de titeltrack mooi klein.

De nummers hebben nogal wat wendingen, en ongemerkt zijn er soms best veel laagjes. Er zijn stukjes waar het tempo wat hoger ligt, maar bombastisch is het nergens. Ritme en melodie vormen een goede harmonie. Soms weet je amper welk geluid waar vandaan komt, maar gitaar, keyboard en iOS muziek gaan hand in hand. ‘Tales from the Edge of Yesterday’ heeft volop onverwachte elementen maar is verrassend toegankelijk.
