In the fall of 2019, guitarist Yuval Ron released (under his own label Wrong Notes Music) the album ‘Somewhere in this Universe, Somebody Hits Drum‘ .
Marco Minnemann (i.a. The Aristocrats and Steven Wilson) was the drummer on this album. Both last year and this year, countless gigs and tours were cancelled worldwide because of Covid. This was also happening to guitarist Yuval Ron and his Planet Earth Concert Tour. But Yuval, like many other bands, planned a live streaming concert. For this purpose, he founded a new trio, the Yuval Ron Trio. Besides Yuval, this trio consists of bassist Niklas Lukassen and drummer Simon Schröder. Together they form the crew of a spaceship, therefore the astronaut uniforms.

Gravitational Lensing
The light is suitably minimalist at the start of the opening track ‘Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum’. The music is quiet yet complex. The camera work is basic, but the images are of good quality. You are not distracted by all kinds of visual aspects. Moreover, the sound is good, which allows you to enjoy the music to the maximum. Yuval and Niklas have a calm and concentrated way of performing. This also suits the beautiful ‘Gravitational Lensing’, yet it would have been nice to see a little more contact with the camera and/or mutual interaction. The close ups of Simon are at the right moments, but there could have been a little more variation in camera angles.

Residence Of The Future
Especially Yuval plays a complicated part during ‘WiFi in Emerald City’, he makes eye contact with Simon. Together, they provide a good performance, Niklas joining in a little later. The tempo is significantly increased and Simon does a great job on the drums. This cool song has a sudden end.
Watching over Shizutani-Kou Bay, pt1 comes from ‘Residence Of The Future’ from 2012. You can hear all kinds of space sounds, Yuval and Niklas barely touching their strings. The drumming suits the scene. This special song lasts for a few minutes. Then it seamlessly flows into ‘Watching over Shizutani-Kou Bay, pt 2’. Only now do Yuval and Niklas start to play fully. This is also a beautiful song.
Of course, a guitar solo is a must. ‘Guitar solo against the virus’ is the title of this serene solo that is mixed with spherical music. The rhythm section keeps completely quiet, so that all attention goes to the subdued guitar playing.

Covid gets to Mars
Yuval regularly plays with both hands on the neck of his guitar, also in ‘The Discovery of Phoebe’. The bass grooves form a nice harmony with the guitar playing. At one point, the song seems to end, but it turns into a minimalistic part. Slowly this change into a cool rocking piece. Just before the end, it flows back to the melody of the beginning. It is a pity that the audience was not allowed to be present, because they would have received a huge applause. Simon’s special way of drumming comes forward well in ‘Covid gets to mars’, it is experimental in nature. This forms a beautiful combination with the unique sounds of bass and guitar. Even when the music gets a bit faster, it remains special.

I Believe in Astronauts
The astronaut uniforms and the way the music sounds, make the theme of space clear. This could have been enhanced with a set, it would certainly have been possible, even with a small budget. But it is all about the music and that is also in
‘I Believe in Astronauts’ is very good. The turn with the sound of a xylophone, real handclaps (and the added sound of it) is fine. Another very well played piece follows, including the added sound of percussion. The next twist is a bit disorderly. Via sampling, there is a countdown, as if a launch is about to take place. There is a ‘lift-off’ with some extra light effects. Another complicated piece is played. You feel that this is the build-up to the end, but unfortunately it is cut just a little too early. A little too soon, the screen goes black. There is a final bow, and it is especially then that you miss the audience. But I especially miss Yuval’s words to his fans… No greeting, no goodbye, it feels a bit strange.

Between some of the songs, there were a few seconds of shots that could have been cut out. On the other hand, this increases the purity of the set. You notice that this is not a mega expensive production, yet everything has been put together with care. The way of performing is pure and modest. A slightly less introverted performance might have taken it to another level. The intensity with which the Yuval Ron Trio plays is tangible, but less visible. The complex music is sometimes experimental. ‘Live Against The Virus’ is a concert to enjoy in peace.

Yuval Ron Trio – Live Against The Virus – streaming concert

In het najaar van 2019 bracht gitarist Yuval Ron (onder zijn eigen label Wrong Notes Music) het album ‘Somewhere in this Universe, Somebody Hits Drum’ uit .
Marco Minnemann (o.a The Aristocrats en Steven Wilson) was de drummer op dit album. Zowel vorig jaar als dit jaar werden er wereldwijd ontelbare optredens en tours gecanceld vanwege Covid. Dat gold ook voor gitarist Yuval Ron en zijn Planet Earth Concert Tour. Maar Yuval plande, net als veel andere bands, een live streaming concert. Hiervoor richtte hij een nieuw trio op, het Yuval Ron Trio. Naast Yuval bestaat dit trio uit bassist Niklas Lukassen , en drummer Simon Schröder. Samen vormen ze de bemanning van een ruimteschip, vandaar de astronautenuniformen.

Gravitational Lensing
Het licht is passend minimalistisch bij aanvang van het openingsnummer ‘Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum’. De muziek is rustig maar toch complex. Het camerawerk is eenvoudig, maar de beelden zijn van goede kwaliteit. Je wordt niet afgeleid door allerlei visuele aspecten. Bovendien is het geluid goed, waardoor je maximaal kunt genieten van de muziek. Yuval en Niklas hebben een rustige en geconcentreerde manier van performen. Dit past ook bij het mooie ‘Gravitational Lensing’, toch was het leuk geweest als er iets meer contact met de camera en/of onderlinge interactie te zien was geweest. De close ups van Simon zijn op de juiste momenten, maar er had iets meer variatie van camera standpunten mogen zitten.

Residence Of The Future
‘Vooral Yuval speelt een ingewikkeld stuk tijdens ‘WiFi in Emerald City’, hij maakt oogcontact met Simon. Samen zorgen ze voor een goede uitvoering, Niklas valt even later weer bij. Het tempo wordt flink opgeschroefd, en Simon laat een knap staaltje drumwerk zien en horen. Dit gave nummer heeft een plotseling einde.

Je hoort allerlei space-geluiden, Yuval en Niklas raken hun snaren amper aan. Het drumwerk past bij het geheel. Dit bijzondere nummer duurt een paar minuten. Dan loopt het naadloos over naar ‘Watching over Shizutani-Kou Bay, pt 2’. Nu pas beginnen Yuval en Niklas volop te spelen. Ook dit is een prachtig nummer.
Een gitaarsolo mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken. ‘Guitar solo Against the Virus ‘ is de titel van deze rustige solo die vermengd wordt met sferische muziek. De ritmesectie houdt zich helemaal stil, zodat alle aandacht naar het ingetogen gitaarspel gaat.

Covid gets to mars
Yuval speelt regelmatig met beide handen op de hals van zijn gitaar, zo ook in ‘The Discovery of Phoebe’. De bas grooves vormen een mooie harmonie met het gitaarspel.

Op een gegeven moment lijkt het nummer te eindigen, maar het is een wending naar een minimalistisch deel. Langzaam verandert dit in een gaaf rockend stuk. Vlak voor het eind vloeit dit weer over naar de melodie van het begin. Jammer dat hier geen publiek bij mocht zijn, want ze hadden zeker een dik applaus gekregen.

Simons bijzondere manier van drummen komt goed naar voren in ‘Covid gets to mars’, het is experimenteel van aard. Dit vormt een mooi geheel met de unieke klanken van bas en gitaar. Ook als de muziek wat sneller wordt, blijft muziek bijzonder van opzet.

I Believe in Astronauts
De astronautenuniformen en de manier waarop de muziek klinkt, maken het thema ruimte duidelijk. Dit had eventueel vergroot kunnen worden met een decor, ook met een klein budget waren er zeker mogelijkheden geweest. Maar het gaat om de muziek en die is ook in
‘I Believe in Astronauts’ zeer goed. De wending met het geluid van een xylofoon, echte handclaps (en het toegevoegde geluid ervan) is prima. Weer volgt er een zeer goed gespeeld stuk, met onder andere het toegevoegde geluid van percussie. De wending hierna verloopt een beetje rommelig. Via sampling wordt er afgeteld, alsof er een lancering plaats gaat vinden. Er is een ‘lift-off’ met wat extra licht effecten. Er wordt nog een gecompliceerd stukje gespeeld. Je voelt dat dit de opbouw naar het einde is, helaas wordt het net iets te vroeg afgekapt. Iets te snel gaat het beeld op zwart. Er volgt nog een buiging, en vooral dan mis je het publiek. Maar ik mis vooral de woorden van Yuval naar zijn fans toe.. geen begroeting, geen afscheid, dat voelt een beetje vreemd.

Tussen sommige nummers zaten enkele seconden beeld die er wel uitgeknipt hadden kunnen worden. Aan de andere kant vergroot dit de puurheid van het geheel. Je merkt dat dit geen mega dure productie is, toch is alles met zorg samengesteld. De manier van performen is puur en ingetogen. Een iets minder introverte performance had het geheel misschien naar een andere level gebracht. De intensiteit waarmee het Yuval Ron Trio speelt, is wel voelbaar, maar wat minder zichtbaar. De complexe muziek is soms experimenteel van opzet. ‘Live Against The Virus’ is een concert om in alle rust van te genieten.
