A year after their formation, ‘The Bluesbones‘ booked their first big success, because in 2012 they were public favourite at the ‘Belgian Blues Challenge’. In 2017 they came second on the ‘European Blues Challenge’. Their live shows are always very good because they play full of passion. At the end of 2019 they decided to release a live album, that’s why they performed at GC Den Breughel in Haacht. At that time nobody could have imagined that the Corona crisis would have such big consequences. After a delay, ‘Live On Stage’ will be launched on 20 November. This will feature well-known songs, most of which are featured on ‘Chasing Shadows‘ (2018). Some songs are much older and come from ‘Voodo Guitar’ (2012).

The album starts with ‘Find my way Out‘, to which Edwin Risbourg’s organ playing immediately has a delicious part. Those who know The BluesBones know that Nico can be understood very well, even live. He has a pleasant slightly rough edge on his warm voice. Of course, guitarist Stef Paglia also makes himself heard to the full. On their previous album Koen Mertens was the drummer. At the end of 2018 Jens Roelandt became the regular drummer of this Belgian band, he performs a nice piece of drumming. Bass player Geert Boeckx provides, as always, a solid foundation. The audience appreciates this, this is good, but not excessive on the CD. Sitting still is almost impossible in ‘The End‘ and also singing along goes without any hesitation. The background vocals can be heard subtly. Stef’s guitar playing is finger licking. It varies beautifully in tempo and volume, and the band goes along with it. This live performance is even more beautiful than the studio version. For a moment Nico sings solo, this comes into its own very well. After the exhilarating ‘Better Life‘ follows ‘The Witchdoctor‘. This oldy is still loved, and rightly so! Over the years this song has evolved, especially after Edwin joined the band about five years ago. The instrumental pieces have a great structure, Stef has an important part in this as well. They vary from quite small played to pleasantly heavy, this has become such a cool song! ‘Cruisin‘ is a wonderfully exhilarating song, in which Nico first sings in high tempo. In a slower part Nico ’tells’ his lyrics, as tempo and volume increase he sings again. Both styles are very good, vocals and music constantly form a unity.

Finally, perhaps audience favourite number 1: ‘Whisky Drinking Woman‘. The subdued start is beautiful. Nico sings or tells very convincingly. The rhythm section plays an excellent basis so that Edwin gets the freedom to give his expression in an instrumental piece. There are a number of tempo and volume changes in the music, Nico goes along with this.
Stef also performs his skills, sometimes he plays pianissimo (very soft). At other times he tears through it with his guitar, this is real ear candy! What a top end of this cd. One small drawback is that fans won’t be surprised with a new song. On the other hand, this cd gives a nice overview of the great songs of The BluesBones. Geert doesn’t freak, he keeps everything tight. But his grooves are definitely good to hear. The quality of the sound is pretty good, the balance between vocals and music is well distributed in the mix. This makes the sensitive pieces as well as the more heavy rock come into their own. The planned tour European around their release has unfortunately been postponed. But fortunately, the release of ‘Live On Stage‘ will get on! Especially when you hear this, you miss the live music enormously. Let’s hope 2021 will be a better year!

The BluesBones – Live On Stage

Een jaar na hun oprichting boekten ‘The Bluesbones’ hun eerste grote succes, want in 2012 waren ze publiekslieveling bij de ‘Belgian Blues Challenge’. In 2017 werden ze tweede op ‘European Blues Challenge’. Hun live shows zijn altijd zeer goed omdat ze vol passie spelen. Eind 2019 besloten ze om een live album uit te brengen, daarom traden ze op in GC Den Breughel in Haacht. Toen had niemand kunnen bedenken dat de Corona crisis zo’n grote gevolgen zou hebben. Na een vertraging wordt ‘Live On Stage’ op 20 november gelanceerd. Hierop staan allemaal bekende nummers, de meeste staan op ‘Chasing Shadows’ (2018). Enkele nummer zijn al veel ouder en komen van ‘Voodo Guitar’ (2012).

Het album start met ‘Find my way Out’, waarop de het orgelspel van Edwin Risbourg meteen een heerlijk aandeel heeft. Voor wie The BluesBones kent weet dat Nico, ook live, zeer goed te verstaan is. Hij heeft een aangenaam licht ruw randje op zijn warme stem. Natuurlijk laat gitarist Stef Paglia ook volop van zich horen. Op hun vorige album was Koen Mertens drummer. Eind 2018 werd Jens Roelandt de vaste drummer van deze Belgische band, hij laat een lekker stukje drumwerk horen. Bassist Geert Boeckx zorgt zoals altijd voor een solide basis. Het publiek waardeert dit, dit is goed, maar niet overdadig te horen op de cd. Stilzitten lukt bijna niet in ‘The End’ en ook het meezingen gaat vanzelf. De achtergrondzang is subtiel te horen. Het gitaarspel van Stef is om je vingers bij af te likken. Hij varieert prachtig in tempo en volume, en de band gaat erin mee. Deze live uitvoering is nóg mooier dan de studioversie. Even zingt Nico solo, dit komt zeer goed tot zijn recht. Na het opzwepende ‘Better Life’ volgt ‘The Witchdoctor’. Dit oudje is nog steeds geliefd, en terecht! In de loop der jaren is dit nummer geëvolueerd, zeker nadat Edwin zo’n vijf jaar geleden bij de band kwam. De instrumentale stukken zijn geweldig opgebouwd, ook Stef heeft hier een belangrijk aandeel in. Ze variëren van vrij klein gespeeld naar aangenaam heavy, dit is zo’n gaaf nummer geworden! ‘Cruisin’ is een heerlijk opzwepend nummer, waarin Nico eerst in hoog tempo zingt. In een langzamer deel Nico ‘vertelt’ zijn tekst, als tempo en volume weer toenemen zingt hij weer. Beide stijlen zijn zeer goed, zang en muziek vormen constant een eenheid.

Tot slot misschien wel publiekslieveling nummer 1: ‘Whisky Drinking Woman’. De start is prachtig klein gespeeld. Nico zingt of vertelt zeer overtuigend. De ritmesectie speelt een prima basis zodat Edwin de ruimte krijgt om zijn invulling te geven in een instrumentaal stuk. Er zijn een aantal tempo en volume wisselingen in de muziek, Nico gaat hierin mee.
Stef laat ook zijn kunnen horen, soms speelt hij pianissimo (heel zacht). Op andere momenten scheurt hij er met zijn gitaar heerlijk doorheen, dit is echte ear candy! Wat een top einde van deze cd. Één klein minpuntje is dat fans niet verrast worden met een nieuw nummer. Aan de andere kant geeft deze cd een mooi overzicht van de toffe nummers van The BluesBones. Geert freakt niet mee, hij houdt alles strak. Maar zijn grooves zijn zeker goed te horen. Het geluid is vrij goed van kwaliteit, de balans tussen zang en muziek is goed verdeeld in de mix. Hierdoor komen zowel de gevoelige stukken als de meer heavy rock prima tot hun recht. De geplande tour Europese rondom hun release is helaas uitgesteld. Maar de release Van ‘Live On Stage’ gaat gelukkig wel door! Zeker als je dit hoort, dan mis je de livemuziek enorm. Laten we hopen dat 2021 een beter jaar wordt!
