Ron Coolen – Rise

Ron Coolen – Rise

Multi-instrumentalist Ron Coolen wrote the music for his debut album ‘Rise‘. These twelve songs vary from prog and classic hard rock to heavy and even trash metal.

The start of ‘Big Devil Data‘ is a bit cloudy, but that’s allowed with old school hard rock. The well-known voice of Keith St. John (a.o. Burning Rain) fits well with it. The guitar playing is now and then pleasantly screaming, the rhythm section is steady. The tight end is quite unexpected, but well chosen.

The unusual but nice start of ‘White Summer‘ is much more electronic than you would expect in (hard)rock. There are some spoken words, this sounds completely distorted. When the rock comes along, it is quite slow. A touch of Oriental sound gives an unusual, but fascinating combination. The rough edge on Keith’s voice is delicious. The build-up to the end is cool.

Almost non-stop follow ‘Too late to surrender‘, you hear spoken sampling from the police and Donald Trump. This song tells the story of Stephen Paddock. During a festival he shot 58 people and injured almost 900. Ron dedicated this song to the victims. If you really listen to the lyrics, the words have quite an impact. During a small played piece there is spoken sampling, followed by a special build-up to the end.

Although the structure of the songs is sometimes a bit predictable, every song has nice details and surprises. A lot of attention has been paid to how each song ends. No boring fade-outs, but you always hear a good build-up towards the end. There is a lot of nice guitar work to be heard. Partly by Ron, partly by various guest guitarists.

In ‘Ashes to Ashes‘ and ‘Paradise‘ the prog elements come up. These songs are about the big fires in California that raged at the end of 2018. ‘Paradise‘ has a nice, quiet start in which light classical elements are interwoven. Again, the lyrics make an impression. Because of the number of repetitions and the way the vocals sound distorted, the impact is partly lost, too bad.

Ron loves trash metal, you can hear that in ‘Kill Kill Kill‘. The melody is with gusts subordinate to the high rhythm. The dynamics in drumming are almost constant. This delicious metal might be a bit too much for some hard rock lovers. It forms a great contrast with the previous tracks. There are cool twists in tempo and volume, on top of that you can hear a lot of guitars. Sam Walters has the lead vocals, this is completed with some cool grunts.

In the short, instrumental ‘Rise‘ there is lovely fast keyboards. This song and ‘Stories‘, where Chris Clancy has the lead vocals, probably fit a bit better with the hard rock lovers. He grunts some of his sentences awesome.
Also, in ‘From your mouth‘ the metal is present, every now and then the rhythm is super tight. There are some light elements between the heavy stuff. Also, here Chris is responsible for the vocals and the grunts. The guitar skills are fabulous. The build-up to the end is very good.

Selfishness‘ starts very quiet, you can hear influences from India. The voice of Göran Edman has a more classic sound, yet his voice fits the rocking parts as well. You hear cool guitar playing, and al lot of keys. This last song ends nicely as well.

There are sometimes quite a few layers in the music, which are not always fully reflected. ‘Rise‘ doesn’t feel like one whole, but more like an album in different parts. With this great debut Ron has shown his versatility.
