Ghost Toast – Shape Without Form

Ieder nummer is anders. In ‘Hunt of Life’ is de sfeer bijna vrolijk.

‘Shape Without Form’ moet dus zeker groeien!

Ghost Toast – Shape Without Form

Ghost Toast has been around for over ten years. This foursome comes from Hungary and makes experimental, instrumental psychedelic prog rock. The rock is sometimes heavy and has a tendency towards metal.

By the title ‘Frankenstein’s‘ you would expect dark sounds, but the start is surprisingly light. The turn to the heavier work comes anyway. It isn’t dark or macabre. This is delicious rock metal, with some piano notes whirling through it. The last few seconds are for keys, well done.

In the first seconds of ‘Eclipse‘ the sound seems to be a bit further away, after that there is heavy rock, where rhythm and melody form a good balance. There is a cool turn to a smaller played part. This sometimes contains sounds of which the source can hardly be traced. Tempo and volume are rebuilt, the strings are pleasantly heavy played. Here too there is a cool portion of drumming. This is all well distributed over the headphones. The single piano sounds almost come out of the blue, but that’s what makes it so beautiful. There is so much to hear, that you keep hearing new things. This is fascinating until the last second.

Y13‘ has a special intro, and I have no idea which way the music is going. The first piece is at least subdued and dreamy. Yet there are several special details in it. Slowly music becomes a bit bizarre, it remains fascinating. Bizarre because rhythm and melody seem to be each other’s opponents. There is also a contradiction between different instruments. Despite these contrasts there is harmony. The spoken sampling comes from the film ‘Space Men’ (1960). Some classical elements have been added. The whole is unique and still accessible.

That will remain so in the upcoming songs. They contain all kinds of details, it puts your ears on edge. Every song is different. In ‘Hunt of Life‘ the atmosphere is almost cheerful. This is a rock cover of Icelandic folk song ‘Krummavísur’. The vocals are by YouTube singer Kelly Jenny. This way Ghost Toast provides a lot of variation, while the album feels like a whole.

W.A.N.T. stands for ‘We Are Not Them‘, and starts with sampling from the science fiction film ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’. The film is based on the book by George Orwell (released in 1949). The sampling disappears slowly, quiet music takes its place. Then there is the rock-metal. Various kinds of music (light and heavy) and sampling alternate regularly. Occasionally there are symphonic elements, these melt together with the heavily played strings. Most twists and turns are fluent, this is not the most accessible song, but it is very captivating. The end fits into the complete album.

Ghost Toast didn’t just use movies as a source of inspiration. The album title comes from the poem ‘The Hollow Men’ by T. S. Eliot. Shape Without Form’ is more or less a concept album that is about the human being who is sometimes inhuman, and/or hollow.
The songs are quite complicated, yet it is surprisingly easy to listen to.
The cello is generally heard in the background, interwoven with the whole. The music varies from light and/or psychedelic to heavy rock tending towards metal. Unnoticed, the whole thing has quite a lot of layers. The songs are quite complicated, yet it’s surprisingly easy to listen. That’s why you have to listen to this album a few times. ‘Shape Without Form‘ has to grow for sure!
