Project: Patchwork – Ultima Ratio

About ten years ago Gerd Albers founded a prog project called ‘Project: Patchwork’. On each album a large number of guest musicians worked together, more than 45 in total. These musicians come from prog bands such as Mystery, Subsignal, and many others. Also on the latest album, ‘Ultima Ratio’, a large number of musicians worked together, for example Jean Pageau (Mystery)and Marek Arnold. ‘Ultima Ratio’ is a retrospective of the terrible year 2020, the year when Covid 19 gripped the world. The lyrics are not about the virus itself, but about the social consequences of the lockdown(s).

‘Ultima Ratio (Pt. I) Prologue’, starts with various keyboard instruments. Special twists and turns follow. The interaction between quieter and rocking parts is good. This instrumental opening track contains a delicious portion of prog. After a subdued ending, ‘New Normality’ follows non-stop. The lyrics are not easy to sing along with, but that isn’t the intention. The backing vocals are a fine addition, sometimes the voices are used as instruments. Again, there are plenty of twists and turns. The details come from the piano, among other things. Instrumental and vocal parts are interspersed. A subdued piece forms the transition to ‘Weeks of Sorrow.’ The rhythm has a pleasant flow, the cymbals are played with care. Although there are differences, the third subdued ending is somewhat predictable.

Also in ‘Code Red’, the good distribution of the music through the headphones stands out. Again the voices blend together nicely. The high-pitched wordless vocals seem like the end of this track, but a surprising twist follows. This time a short silence is taken before the instrumental ‘Hope’ begins. This calm song still contains quite a few layers. The combination of different keyboards in ‘Dead-end Street’ is special. The number of layers is built up, just like the tempo and volume. Some of the changes are quite surprising. There is a lot of variation, some parts even contain some metal. The vocals are generally in the quieter parts, this keeps vocals and music in balance. If there is a touch of roughness on the vocals, the balance remains. Again you hear beautiful, gentle sounds of the cymbals. Just before the end, there is compelling guitar playing.

At times, the background vocals in ‘Depressed Sentiments’ are a bit predictable. So is the manner in which part this rather sugary track is constructed. The bass provides a lovely contrast.

The first instrumental piece of ‘Keepers of the Fire’ has some slightly classical elements. There are plenty of variations in the music: the drums are played equally staccato, there is nice organ playing. Jean Pageau’s varied vocals range from quiet to stressed. Sometimes his voice is stacked. The turn to a subdued section goes well, the flute playing fits in nicely. After a minimalist piece, tempo and volume slowly build. After a lovely proggy piece, another compelling part follows in which you can hear Mystery influences.

The instrumental ‘Ultima Ratio (Pt. II) Epilogue’ has a mysterious start. After a faster played part, tempo and volume go down again. This last track seems to fade out, but another instrumental piece comes after it.

The concept is quite risky, because actually we have had enough of Covid. The lyrics might not appeal to you deeply now. But who knows, maybe Covid will belong to history someday, and you’ll look at it differently in the future. The vocals and the blend of the voices is good. There are many details in the music, such as the sound of bar chimes. The interaction and/or interplay of acoustic and electric guitar is very good. ‘Ultima Ratio’ does need to grow on you, as you keep hearing new things.

Project: Patchwork – Ultima Ratio

‘Ultima Ratio (Pt. I) Prologue’, start met diverse toetsinstrumenten.
