The prog album ‘You have it all’ is an extension of the EP ‘Spirals and Portals‘, which Lobate Scarp released in 2019. From that came the singles ‘Nothing Wrong’ (remixed) and ‘Beautiful Light’. These are interwoven within the new album to create more cohesion. Several very well-known guest musicians participate. Like Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) and Jimmy Keegan (Spock’s Beard, Pattern-Seeking Animals)

In the beginning you can hear the pitch differences of the drums, pretty soon after that there is a little less variation in the percussion. But that gives room for various key and string instruments and the bass, among others. In the background you can hear beautiful details of the cymbals and other percussion. This comes out even better with headphones than through the speakers. There seems to be a build up to the end. But a minimalist part follows, here the combination of the musical instruments and the way they are played is intriguing. The intriguing continues in ‘Nothing Wrong’. The first sentences are sung quite low, the color of this is special. The (stacked) vocals and music are well balanced. Moreover, the layers in the music are well distributed. The guitar playing is wonderful, but that is really true for everything in this track.

‘In the Night I’ is much shorter than expected, and the ending feels a bit strange. In part of ‘Life-Line’ the rhythm is tight, here you hear little difference in pitch of the different drums. Still, there is certainly plenty of dynamic in the drumming. The bass is pleasantly present, forming a nice contrast with the high notes of, for example, the keyboard. Again, the ending is engagingly composed and played.

Lobate Scarp manages to remain constantly captivating: the twists and turns in ‘You Have It All’ are sublime, the whole thing is fantastically distributed over the headphones. There are many details, the way instruments merge, combine or alternate is special. Rhythms sometimes seem to go against each other, but the balance remains. There are pleasant instrumental parts, including a lot of (bass) guitar and keyboards. Again, it’s the string instruments that come forward nicely. This title track contains numerous twists and turns. Some parts are a bit sweet, other parts are prog rock.
With a beautifully subdued piece, this epic seems to end, but there is another very small piece attached to it, which is surprising! ‘In the Night II’ is also very short, and a bit sweet.

In ‘Beautiful Light’ the influences of Spock’s Beard can be heard. This is another cool track, with fantastic (stacked) vocals. During the first part of ‘Our Test Tube Universe’ you can hear the rhythm section in the foreground. The keyboard work is super, you definitely recognize Ryo Okumoto in that. The transition to the subdued part is very good, and several twists and turns follow. This cool track has a nice sudden ending. ‘Flowing Through the Change’ is a track in five parts. During more than 17 minutes a lot of beautiful things pass by. Dynamic drumming, great bass grooves and compelling guitar play. The string instruments are played in a good variety and always form a perfect melange with the whole, the same goes for the keyboards. The vocals are in constant balance with the music. This epic has a cool, extended build up to the end.

These nine tacks have quite a few layers at times, yet it doesn’t feel complex. There are lots of details, and you keep hearing new things. ‘You have it all’ is one of the best, if not the best album of 2022 so far.

Het prog album ‘You have it all’ is een uitbreiding op de EP ‘Spirals and Portals’, dat Lobate Scarp in 2019 uitbracht. Daar komen de singles ‘Nothing Wrong’ (opnieuw gemixt) en ‘Beautiful Light’ van. Deze zijn binnen het nieuwe album verweven om meer samenhang te creëren. Er doen diverse zeer bekende gastmuzikanten aan mee. Zoals Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) en Jimmy Keegan (Spock’s Beard, Pattern-Seeking Animals)

In het begin hoor je de toonhoogte verschillen van de drums, vrij snel daarna is er wat minder variatie in het slagwerk. Maar dat geeft wel de ruimte voor onder andere diverse toets-en strijkinstrumenten en de bas. Op de achtergrond hoor mooie details van de cimbalen en andere percussie. Dit komt met koptelefoon nog beter tot zijn recht dan via de speakers. Er lijkt een opbouw naar het einde te komen. Maar er volgt een minimalistisch stuk, hier is de combinatie van de muziekinstrumenten en de manier waarop ze bespeeld worden intrigerend. Het intrigerende gaat verder in ‘Nothing Wrong’. De eerste zinnen zijn vrij laag gezongen, de kleur hiervan is bijzonder. De (gestapelde) zang en muziek zijn prima in balans. Bovendien zijn de laagjes in de muziek goed verdeeld. Het gitaarspel is heerlijk, maar dat geldt eigenlijk voor alles in deze track.

‘In the Night I’ is veel korter dan verwacht, en het einde voelt een beetje merkwaardig. In een deel van ‘Life-Line’ is het ritme strak, hier hoor je weinig verschil in toonhoogte van de verschillende drums. Toch zit er zeker ruim voldoende dynamiek in het drumwerk. De bas is aangenaam aanwezig, en vormt een mooi contrast met de hoge tonen van bijvoorbeeld het keyboard. Weer is het einde boeiend gecomponeerd en gespeeld.

Lobate Scarp weet constant te blijven boeien: de wendingen in ‘You Have It All’ zijn subliem, het geheel is fantastisch verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Er zijn veel details, de manier waarop instrumenten samensmelten, gecombineerd of juist afgewisseld worden is bijzonder. Ritmes lijken soms tegen elkaar in te gaan, maar de balans blijft. Er zijn aangename instrumentale delen, met onder andere lekker veel (bas)gitaar en keyboards. Weer zijn het de strijkinstrumenten die mooi naar voren komen. Deze titeltrack bevat talloze wendingen. Sommige delen zijn een beetje zoet, andere delen zijn prog rock.
Met een prachtig ingetogen stuk lijkt deze epic te eindigen, maar er zit nog een heel klein stukje aan vast, dat is verrassend! Ook ‘In the Night II’ is erg kort, en een beetje zoet.

In ‘Beautiful Light’ zijn de invloeden van Spock’s Beard te horen. Ook dit is een gave track, met fantastische (gestapelde) zang. Tijdens het eerste stuk van ‘Our Test Tube Universe’ hoor je de ritmesectie op de voorgrond. Het toetsenwerk is super, daar herken je zeker Ryo Okumoto in. De transitie naar het ingetogen deel is zeer goed, en er volgen nog diverse twists and turns. Deze gave track heeft een mooi plotseling eind. ‘Flowing Through the Change’ is een track in vijf delen. Gedurende ruim 17 minuten komt er veel moois voorbij. Zoals dynamische drumwerk, gave bas grooves en meeslepend gitaarspel. De strijkinstrumenten zijn goed gevarieerd bespeeld en vormen steeds een perfecte melange met het geheel, datzelfde geldt voor de toetsen. De zang is in constante balans met de muziek. Deze epic heeft een gave, uitgebreide opbouw naar het einde.

Deze negen tacks hebben soms behoorlijk wat laagjes, toch voelt het niet complex. Er zijn veel details, en je hoort steeds weer nieuwe dingen. ‘You have it all’ is één van de beste, zo niet het beste album van 2022 tot nu toe.
