Poor Genetic Material – Here Now

Martin Griffiths was singer of the prog band ‘Beggars Opera’ in the 70s. Now he has the lead vocals for the Art rock band ‘Poor Genetic Material‘ together with his son Philip. Four years ago, this band released the album ‘Abscence‘. This album was about the fact that everything we are experiencing now, will soon be a bygone era. Now the successor ‘Her Now‘ is out. Here comes the other side of the coin: the optimistic side. What we are going through forms memories. They change because we are changing. But the beautiful moments are there forever: here, now and with us.

The album starts with the title track. After a few gentle sounds a twist follows. Shortly after that, the atmosphere of the music is quite cheerful and a bit summery. The color of the vocals is in line with that. This is occasionally complemented by the background vocals. Several transitions flow into each other. Other changes come more suddenly. The whole is well distributed over headphones. The bass runs like a red thread through a large part of this song. Just before the end the cheerful atmosphere of the beginning returns. ‘The Waiting Game‘ has a subdued start, vocals and music continue to form a unity. In addition, the instruments are well balanced. The same goes for the percussion, which is sometimes pleasantly present in the foreground. The minimalist piece is fantastic! The compelling guitar playing afterwards ends in a somewhat disappointing fade out.

The Garden‘ consists of four parts, ‘The War‘ is the first part. The drumming has a march-like tempo, but there are also rests for the drums. In this song Martin has the lead vocals, The text is about the history of the Schwetzingen Gardens. He talks about personal experiences, and the peace he finds in the gardens. During an instrumental piece there is melancholy, the flute makes the sober feeling a little lighter. A single sentence returns a couple of times. Contrary to their previous album, there is no lyric book here. Reading along with the lyrics while listening is unfortunately not possible. The twists and turns in the music are well done here as well. The mysterious piece of music feels almost spiritual.
After a fantastically extensive instrumental piece the song seems to end. But there’s more to come, including cool guitar playing. ‘The Peace‘ is the last part. The build-up to the end of this cool epic is quite short.

The intro of ‘This Place‘ is nice and calm. The clear, quiet vocals are in balance with the music.
The increase in tempo and volume takes some time, but if there is, it’s quite sudden. The stacked vocals are fine. After a few twists and turns there is compelling guitar playing and a captivating piece on the keys. This last song is slowly fading away, but it could have been a bit more gradual at the very last. Some songs don’t end very special. While the songs themselves are very well constructed. There are plenty twists and turns in the music. These go from acoustic pieces and / or subdued parts to nice rock, sometimes with a touch of pop in it. At other times, the differences in volume are subtle. The details are well distributed over the headphones. The lyrics do not invite you to sing along, they are particular “listening lyrics”. ‘Here Now‘ is more complex than you hear at first. There are quite a lot of layers in the music. Yet it listens easily away, moreover, various melodies stick pleasantly in your head. In short, ‘Poor Genetic Material‘ makes solid German Art/progrock that deserves more fame.

Poor Genetic Material – Here Now

Nu is de opvolger ‘Her Now’ uit.

Diverse transities vloeien in elkaar over.

The Garden’ bestaat uit vier delen, ‘The War’ is het eerste deel.
‘The Peace’ is het laatste deel.

‘Here Now’ zit complexer in elkaar dan je in eerste instantie hoort.
