Soul Secret – Blue Light Cage

Soul Secret is a melodic prog metal band from Italy. Since the start in 2004 there have been some changes in the line-up. Guitarist Francesco Cavezza has been part of this quintet since 2018. ‘Blue Light Cage‘ is their fifth studio album, and will be launched on 23 October through the Dutch label ‘Layered Reality Productions‘.

The first few seconds are quiet, then follows a deliciously exhilarating piece with a fine mix of metal and electronic sounds. Antonio Mocerino leaves his drum kit alone for a moment. ‘Opening Sequence‘ is a varied instrumental song, and has a tight end. The pleasant heavy sound can also be heard in ‘The Ghost Syndicate‘. The voice of vocalist Lino Di Pietrantonio is less heavy than you would expect in metal. The backing vocals are well balanced with the whole. The balance and/or alternation between (bass)guitar and keyboards is fine. The delicious keyboard solo is by guest musician Derek Sherinian. The transition from the surprisingly calm, instrumental ‘Switch On‘ to ‘Blue Light Cage‘ is not entirely smooth. The first part of the title track is quiet, partly due to Francesco’s acoustic guitar playing. Because Lino doesn’t have a really warm sound in his voice, you might not be completely touched by the words he sings. Bass player Claudio Casaburi, together with Antonio, provides a wonderfully solid base. After a piece of compelling guitar playing follows a smaller part with beautiful sax playing by guest musician Marek Arnold. This rather subdued title track is well constructed. After a fantastic instrumental piece ‘We’ll Become Dust’ has a beautiful build-up to the end. The average ‘Going Home‘ ends a bit boring with a fade out.

Jump Right In‘ is full of cool transitions: Metal, the electronic side of the keys, piano sounds, Latin, jazz and even a touch of pop are added here. You’ll hear all sorts of things after, and sometimes even mixed together. There is a nice balance in headphones. Moreover, all kinds of details have been incorporated. With gusts, a lot comes your way, because the twists and turns sometimes
follow each other at lightning speed. And yet this is all in balance. The same goes for the quiet piece that is woven into it. In the epic ‘Breathe and Recover‘ the mix between melody and rhythm is special, sometimes they almost seem to be each other’s opposites. Here too there are several tempo and volume changes. There is a fine blend between compelling guitar playing and, a bit more in the background, lovely organ playing. Every now and then Luca Di Gennaro sprinkles piano sounds through this. After a few optimistic sentences follows mysterious and intriguing music. Then there is some crackling, interspersed with a rustling sound. And so, this last song ends rather singularly.

Lino lengthens certain parts of words. At other times he ‘sticks’ them together. That makes the understandability more difficult, even with the lyric booklet in hand. Especially when he flashes the words towards you at high speed. Because the lyrics are not always easy to fathom. I still miss some finesse in the way some songs end, or start. Sometimes it seems as if one or two seconds are missing. They’re just small details, but those details that are relevant to get closer to perfection. Still, ‘Soul Secret‘ has grown again, especially balancing the twists and turns. You keep hearing new things, so it takes some time to get to know these complex songs. There are countless details, twists and styles in the music’. So ‘Blue Light Cage‘ is a very varied, but well composed album.

Soul Secret – Blue Light Cage
