About five years ago the band ‘Circuline‘ was founded in New York. They play modern cinematic prog rock.
‘Circulive New View‘ is their second live CD/DVD/Blue ray. This ‘box’ will be released October 8th. The concert is already recorded in 2017, during the first edition of ‘International ProgStock Festival’.

Circuline opens their concert with the mysterious sounds of ‘Erosion‘. Seamlessly this merge into ‘Soleil Noir’. The keys of Andrew Colyer are clearly but pleasantly present in the instrumental song. Darin Brannon’s drumming is nice and tight.

‘One Wish‘ comes from ‘Circuline‘, their debut album. There’s self-confidence in the voice of front lady Natalie Brown. And rightly so, because she has a versatile voice. At times she sounds a bit sensual, at other times she shows more power. The vocals with William “Billy Spillane” form a beautiful blend. Alek Darson’s guitar playing is delicious. Andrew shows special piano sounds. Of course, we must not forget the bass of Joel Simches. The instrumental piece is complex.

‘Piano Challenge‘ lives up to his name. Darin and Andrew first play the piano in turns. When they play together, many piano tones ‘flutter around’. This is well distributed over the headphones. Beautiful clear sounds are alternated with heavier piano playing.This is not only varied, but also surprising. Suddenly the other instruments are added. Joel is now behind the drum kit. Like the previous songs, this song is also well constructed. The acoustic performance of ‘Return’ feels so natural. As if this song always was. The harmony vocals, in which Andrew also participates, is perfectly in balance with each other and with the music.

Also ‘Fallout Shelter‘ has a special intro. Alek conjures up all kinds of special sounds out of his strings. This instrumental song is unique and very proggy. ‘Pale Blue Dot‘ is a cover of ‘Sound of Contact’, a band of Dave Kerzner. Matt Dorsey is a bass player there, and he also toured with Circuline. Circuline plays a great cover, that fits well with their own songs. ‘Forbidden Planet‘ has a cool opening. Andrew takes mysterious sounds out of his seaboard. Especially for this live performance a very good piece of percussion follows, in which all band members participate.

The last three songs also have a fascinating structure. Everything is well to very well sung and played. William and Natalie both have a clear pronunciation and a beautiful voice. Their voices form an excellent harmony. And the same goes for the (background) singing of Andrew. Moreover, Natalie has a lot of power on her voice. Which is sometimes comparable to Durga McBroom, the backing vocalist of Pink Floyd, among others.

The special, complex music has been carefully performed. The combination and/or alternation between the different keyboards and guitars plus the bass is beautiful. This is very well complemented by the drumming. Because of all this Circuline has a very own sound. Besides that, they have grown as a band, so the songs have evolved.
I have been following Circuline for a number of years now, but they have surprised me absolute positively.

DVD/Blue Ray
The CD comes with a DVD and Blue Ray. I had an error message with the DVD, so I could not play it. The Blue Ray did. Image and sound are fine. The editing is quiet, which fits with total setting. In short, ‘Circulive New View‘ is an asset to the prog lover.

Circuline – Circulive New View

Een jaar of vijf geleden werd in New York de band ‘Circuline’ opgericht. Ze spelen moderne cinematic prog rock. ‘Circulive New View’ is hun tweede live CD/DVD/Blue ray. Deze ‘box’ komt 8 oktober uit. Het concert is al in 2017, tijdens de eerste editie van ‘International ProgStock Festival’, opgenomen.

Circuline opent hun concert met de mysterieuze geluiden van ‘Erosion’. Naadloos loopt dit over naar ‘Soleil Noir’. De toetsen van Andrew Colyer zijn duidelijk maar aangenaam aanwezig in het instrumentale nummer. Het drumwerk van Darin Brannon is lekker strak.

‘One Wish’ komt van ‘Circuline’, hun debuutalbum. Er klinkt zelfvertrouwen in de stem van frontvrouw Natalie Brown door. En terecht, want ze heeft een veelzijdige stem. Soms klinkt ze een beetje zwoel, op andere momenten laat ze meer power horen. De samenzang met William “Billy Spillane” vormt een mooie melange. Het gitaarspel van Alek Darson is heerlijk.
Andrew laat bijzondere pianoklanken horen. Natuurlijk mogen we ook de bas van Joel Simches niet vergeten. Het instrumentale stuk zit complex in elkaar.

‘Piano Challenge’ doet zijn naam eer aan. Darin en Andrew spelen eerst omstebeurt piano. Als ze samen spelen vliegen de pianoklanken je bijna om de oren. Dit is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Mooie heldere klanken worden afgewisseld met zwaarder pianospel. Dit is niet alleen gevarieerd, maar ook verrassend. Plotseling zijn de andere instrumenten erbij gekomen. Joel zit nu achter de drumkit. Net als de voorgaande nummers, is ook dit nummer goed opgebouwd.

De akoestische uitvoering van ‘Return’ voelt zó natuurlijk aan. Alsof dit nummer altijd al zo was. De samenzang, waar ook Andrew aan mee doet, is perfect in balans met elkaar en met de muziek. Ook ‘Fallout Shelter’ heeft een bijzonder intro. Alek tovert allerlei bijzondere geluiden onder zijn snaren vandaan. Dit instrumentale nummer is uniek en zeer proggy.

‘Pale Blue Dot’ is een cover van ‘Sound of Contact’ een band van Dave Kerzner. Matt Dorsey is daar bassist, en hij heeft ook met Circuline getourd. Circuline zet een prima cover neer, die goed aansluit bij hun eigen nummers.
‘Forbidden Planet’ heeft een gave opening. Andrew haalt geheimzinnige geluiden uit zijn seaboard. Speciaal voor deze live uitvoering volgt er een zeer goed stuk percussie, waar alle bandleden aan mee doen.

Ook de laatste drie nummers hebben een boeiende structuur. Alles is goed tot zeer goed gezongen en gespeeld. William en Natalie hebben beide een duidelijke uitspraak en een mooie stem. Hun stemmen vormen een prima harmonie. En dat geldt ook voor de (achtergrond)zang van Andrew. Bovendien heeft Natalie een flinke power op haar stem. Die soms vergelijkbaar is met Durga McBroom, de achtergrondzangeres van onder andere Pink Floyd.

De bijzondere, complexe muziek is zorgvuldig uitgevoerd. De combinatie en/of afwisseling tussen de verschillende toetsinstrumenten en gitaren plus de bas is prachtig. Dit wordt zeer goed aangevuld door het drumwerk. Door dit alles heeft Circuline een heel eigen sound. Daarnaast zijn ze als band gegroeid waardoor de nummers geëvolueerd zijn. Ik volg Circuline al een aantal jaar, maar ze hebben mij absoluut positief verrast.

DVD/Blue Ray
Bij de CD zit een DVD en Blue Ray geleverd. Bij de DVD had ik een foutmelding, waardoor ik hem niet af kon spelen. De Blue Ray deed het wel. Beeld en geluid hiervan zijn prima. De montage is rustig, dat past bij totale setting. Kortom ‘Circulive New View’ is een aanwinst voor de prog liefhebber.
