Singer/multi-instrumentalist Kristoffer Gildenlöw is well known in the prog metal world. He became well known as bass player of ‘Pain of Salvation’, currently he plays with Kayak. Homebound‘ is his third solo album, just like his previous albums it is quiet and sober. The tracks have symphonic elements and compelling guitar solos. With his soft post-progressive songs, he always knows how to touch his fans. Originally the release was supposed to be in April, but due to the corona crisis the release was about six weeks later.

Eternal‘ has a very soft start with sounds of birds. There is some soundscaping and gloomy but clear violin playing. This short instrumental opening track turns into ‘Holy Ground‘. The subdued atmosphere continues with lingering tones of the keys. Furthermore, there are several layers of acoustic guitar playing and beautiful emotional vocals. The volume is built up, at the moment you can expect an explosion of sound, the music is subdued again. The vocals are in line with this decrease in volume. After a few similar twists this song fades out beautifully.
Also, in ‘Like Father Like Son‘ Kristoffer sings his words with emotion. As guest drummer Dirk Bruinenberg picks up his drumsticks after a while, he drums beautifully soft. The organ is subtly interwoven with the other music. When Kristoffer sings louder, he keeps the emotion in his voice. The slightly rocking and compelling guitar solo by Paul Coenradie fits perfectly into the whole. The volume changes flow wonderfully into each other. Every detail is perfectly positioned, all layers are excellent in harmony with each other.

One beautiful song follows the other. Music and vocals are balanced everywhere. The background vocals of Jan Willem Ketelaers in ‘Our Home‘ merges beautifully with the (over)sweet whole.

The subdued and sometimes stacked vocals and the sober music of ‘I Cried Today‘ are sublime. Because of the increase in volume and tempo the whole becomes even more intense. The fragile sung words that follow now touches me even more. The build-up back to more volume and tempo creates a fanatic build-up to the end.

Chelsea Hotel‘ is an ode to Lennard Cohen. This cover couldn’t have been better, chapeau!

With the intensely sung ‘You Need Not Stay (Away)‘ this beautiful album ends.

Lovers of for example ‘Deer Hunter‘ and ‘Blackfield‘ will certainly appreciate these nine subdued songs. Because they contain countless layers and are much more complex than you would think at first glance.
Would Kristoffer sing about his own feelings? The lyrics at least make you think. Moreover, he can be understood almost word for word. He always knows how to touch you with his voice, he can do that like no other. ‘Homebound‘ is sober and melancholic, yet it’s still nice to listen to this beautiful album over and over again.
