GorMusik – Snakes & Angels

As a ten-year-old boy, Gordon (a.k.a. Gordo) Bennett wanted an acoustic guitar. Although it was only $15, he had to beg and plead to get it. About six years later, he bought his first eclectic guitar. He was inspired by bands like Genesis, Jethro Tull and Deep Purple. Later he was inspired by King Crimson, Frank Zappa and many other bands. Gordo plays not only guitar, but also guitar synthesizer and bass. In 2015, he released, under the name GorMusik the album ‘Fun In OuterSpace’ out. ‘Snakes & Angels’ was released September 10th, through Melodic Revolution Records.

‘The Beginning’ has a very quiet start, the spoken words sound distorted. There are several added sounds, and choir sounds in the background. Sound-scaping creates a surrealistic atmosphere. After about 3,5 minutes, the music becomes “earthier” and the vocals join in, regularly with echoes. Vocal and extended instrumental parts alternate. Rock/metal influences and light classical music form an alternation or a nice mixture. A hectic part is followed by a piece with classical elements. There is much to enjoy, for example the stacked vocals, percussion and bird sounds. The bird sounds and the minimalist guitar play have a relaxing effect. Multiple layers of (acoustic) guitar and a lovely rhythm give it a cheerful touch, the twists and turns keep coming. The slow, wordless choral singing turns into extraordinary music. A minus is that the sound of the percussion is sometimes too tinny. The countless twists and turns do not always seem to have a connection with the whole in the first instance. Moreover, one or two transitions do not run smoothly. Because of this, a few parts of this special epic sound a bit “messy”. In ‘The Deception’, you can hear references to the Garden of Eden in the text, but there are also hints about the present and the future.

After the mysterious start of ‘The Wandering’, the sound of string instruments forms a fine blend with the rest of the music. Slowly the music gets more power. The added sounds in the softer part, draw too much attention away from the vocals. During a (metal related) instrumental piece, there is some great screaming guitar play. The drumming is fine, except the tinny sound. A beautiful turn to a quietly played part follows. The beautiful build up to the end, runs over into ‘The Lost’. Guitar playing is beautifully combined with the warm sounds of strings. The flow is slow but pleasant. There are numerous changes in the music, for instance you can hear beautiful flute playing. There are fewer added sound effects, which does justice to the pure sound of the music. ‘The Lost Orchestra’ starts with beautiful classical elements. Too bad about the crackling sounds, these are especially noticeable when listening with headphones. The touch of Arabic influences forms a nice contrast with the electronic sounds. The sound runs back and forth in the headphones and is clear here. This remains good, even when there is only classical music. After a nice melodic piece, you can hear the sound of crickets and grasshoppers for a while, with which this last track ends.

In some of these five tracks, there are quite a few added sounds and/or effects. This sometimes takes too much attention away from the fantastic (acoustic) guitar playing of Gordo. Also, the echo on the vocals is sometimes too much. This concept album is a summary of a part of the Bible. For the knowers: from Genesis to Revelation.
Although there are Christian references in the lyrics, they are mainly about the battle between good and evil. But with a positive message. ‘Snakes & Angels’ is a complex and varied prog album.

Als tienjarig jongetje wilde Gordon (alias Gordo) Bennett graag een akoestische gitaar hebben. Hoewel die maar $15 kostte, moest hij flink zeuren om de gitaar te krijgen. Een jaar of zes later kocht hij zijn eerste eclectische gitaar. Hij liet zich inspireren door bijvoorbeeld Genesis, Jethro Tull en Deep Purple. Later kwamen daar King Crimson, Frank Zappa en vele andere bands bij. Gordo speelt niet alleen gitaar, maar ook gitaarsynthesizer en bas. In 2015 bracht hij , onder de naam GorMusik het album ‘Fun In OuterSpace’ out. ‘Snakes & Angels’ kwam 10 september uit onder het label Melodic Revolution Records.

‘The Beginning’ heeft een hele rustige start, de gesproken woorden klinken vervormd. Er zijn verschillende toegevoegde geluiden, en op de achtergrond klinkt koorzang. Soundscaping zorgt voor een surrealistische sfeer. Na zo’n 3,5 minuten wordt de muziek “aardser” en komt de zang erbij, regelmatig zit hier een echo op. Vocale en uitgebreide instrumentale delen wisselen elkaar af. Rock/metal invloeden en licht klassieke muziek vormen een afwisseling of een mooie melange. Na een hectisch deel volgt een stuk met klassieke elementen. Er is veel om van te genieten, bijvoorbeeld de gestapelde zang, percussie en vogelgeluiden. De vogelgeluiden en het minimalistische gitaarspel hebben een ontspannende werking. Meerdere laagjes (akoestisch) gitaar en een heerlijk ritme geven een vrolijk tintje, de wendingen blijven komen. De langzame, woordeloze koorzang gaat over in bijzondere muziek. Een minpuntje is dat het geluid van de percussie soms te blikkerig is. De ontelbare wendingen lijken in eerste instantie niet altijd een verbinding met het geheel te hebben. Bovendien verloopt een enkele transitie niet helemaal mooi. Hierdoor komen kleine stukjes van deze bijzondere epic een beetje rommelig over. In ‘The Deception’ hoor je in de tekst verwijzingen naar het Hof van Eden, maar er zijn ook aanduidingen over het heden en de toekomst.

Na de mysterieuze start van ‘The Wandering’ vormt het geluid van strijkinstrumenten een prima melange met overige muziek. Langzaam krijgt de muziek meer power. De toegevoegde geluiden in het zachtere deel, halen de aandacht iets te veel weg van de zang. Tijdens een (metal gerelateerd) instrumentaal stuk is er heerlijk gillend gitaarspel. Het drumwerk is prima, behalve dan het blikkerige geluid. Er volgt een prachtige wending naar een rustig gespeeld deel. De mooie opbouw naar het eind, loopt over naar ‘The Lost’. Gitaarspel wordt prachtig gecombineerd met de warme klanken van strijkinstrumenten. De flow is langzaam maar aangenaam. Er zijn talloze veranderingen in de muziek, zo hoor je onder andere mooi fluitspel. Er zijn minder toegevoegde geluidseffecten, waardoor de pure klank van de muziek goed tot zijn recht komt. ‘The Lost Orchestra’ start met prachtige, klassieke elementen. Jammer van de krakende geluidjes, deze vallen vooral op als je met koptelefoon luistert. Het vleugje Arabische invloeden vormt een leuk contrast met de elektronische geluidjes. Het geluid loopt heen en weer in de koptelefoon en is hier helder. Dit blijft goed, ook als er alleen klassieke muziek is. Na een mooi melodieus stuk hoor je nog even het geluid van krekels en sprinkhanen, hiermee dooft deze laatste track uit.

In een aantal van deze vijf tracks, zijn er een behoorlijk aantal toegevoegde geluiden en/of effecten. Dit haalt soms te veel aandacht weg van het fantastische (akoestische) gitaarspel van Gordo. Ook de echo op de zang is soms te overdadig. Dit concept album is een samenvatting van een deel van de bijbel. Voor de kenners: van Genesis tot Openbaring.
Hoewel er Christelijke verwijzingen in de tekst zitten, gaan de teksten gaan vooral over de strijd tussen goed en kwaad. Maar wel met een positieve boodschap. ‘Snakes & Angels’ is een complex en gevarieerd prog album.
