Guy Verlinde – Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day

The Belgian singer/guitarist recorded no less than 13 blues & roots albums in 12 years.
His new album, released on September 1st, is called ‘Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day’. Because of the cancelled concerts and thus the loss of income, Guy launched a crowdfunding campaign for the first time. That worked out much better than he had expected, so he could invite guest musicians. He helped other musicians, because they also had little, or no income due to the corona lockdown. Guy wanted to make a positive album. Because when you stand in the light of a brand new day, you always get a new chance to make a difference.

‘Breaking Dawn’ has a beautiful, gentle start. The combination of the wonderful guitar playing and the low, slowly tones get under my skin immediately. This very short, quiet opening track symbolises the dawn of day. I would have liked to enjoy this much longer, because this music fits the atmosphere of waking up at ease. The rhythm and the banjo in ‘Up on the Mountain’ give a comfortable flow. They represent a flowing river. The stacked vocals invite you to sing along. The harmonica playing in the instrumental piece fits perfectly. Due to the number of repetitions, this song ripples quietly until it ends in a fade out.

After two small played (and maybe a bit sugary) songs, the blues brass track ‘I’m Your Man’, is clearly different. ‘If I Were Your God’ ties in nicely with this. Despite the subject matter, the atmosphere of this song is quite light-hearted. The volume of the horn section suits the whole perfectly. Then the song switches back to subdued vocals and music. The melancholic duet ‘No More’ is about the decision not to suffer anymore after a break-up. It is beautifully sung in a fragile way. But towards the end I miss some conviction. If the vocals had increased a tiny bit in power, it would have been convincing. Because then it would have been clear to the listener that the “black page” was finally turned.

‘Both Sides of the Blues’ is rhythmic and has a touch of African influences. This gives a sunny and summery feeling, even on a grey rainy day. In this feel good song, nice details have been incorporated. I automatically move along with the wonderful rhythm of ‘Surrender to the Groove’. The lyrics are about the positive vibe that dance and music give. And you can feel that vibe, played live it will certainly make a great atmosphere. The violin playing adds extra cheerfulness.

‘The Way You Are’ is sung straight from the heart. The string arrangement comes into its own here. The piano playing in ‘Karma’s Gonna Kick Your Ass’ is delicious. The criticism on people who make someone else’s life miserable online is brought in a cheerful way. In this duet, there is no disrespect in the way of singing. This fits the whole, but the intention of the lyrics may not come through as well. During an instrumental piece, there is again some wonderful piano playing and the rhythm has a pleasant flow.
The last song, ‘In July’ is a short, laid back track with beautiful harmonica playing.

The spreading of the songs over the album is good. Very subdued songs are interspersed with music in which the tempo is a bit higher. The tempo and/or volume changes in the songs themselves are very subtle. Now and then there could have been a little more emphasis on a single sentence or word. Then the different emotions would have come into their own better. ‘Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day’ is pleasantly quiet. These songs are best listened to in a relaxed way.

Guy Verlinde – Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day

Zijn nieuwe album, dat 1 september uitkwam, heet ‘Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day’.

I’m Your Man’, duidelijk anders. Daar sluit ‘If I Were Your God’ mooi bij aan.

‘Both Sides of the Blues’ is ritmisch en heeft vleugje Afrikaanse invloeden.

‘The Way You Are’ is recht uit het hart gezongen. Het pianospel in Karma’s Gonna Kick Your Ass’ is heerlijk .

‘Standing In The Light Of A Brand New Day’ is aangenaam rustig.
