Silver Nightmares – Apocalypsis

Italian band Silver Nightmares has been influenced by bands such as Asia, Genesis, Opeth, and many others. Their music is a mix of rock, metal and classical. In addition, history is also an important source of inspiration. This can be heard not only on their debut EP ‘The Wandering Angel.’ But also on their first full CD ‘Apocalypsis,’ which was released November 1st.

‘Saphiens’ has a particularly gentle start. Sampled sounds and music give the atmosphere of a jungle. Slowly tempo and volume increase, and the tropical atmosphere disappears, then rock/metal enters. When tempo and volume are a bit lower, you hear the first sung words. On a single word you hear a slight echo, sometimes the vocals are stacked. There are quite a few twists and turns in vocals and music. In the extended instrumental intro of ‘Nefertiti’, the keys come into play extensively. The combination of slightly theatrical vocals (which are sometimes stacked) and the music makes the whole thing feel a bit like a rock opera. But for that real experience, it is missing some intensity. ‘Etemenanki’ is a ruin of a pyramid formation structure (temple tower) from the ancient city of Babylon. The soft mysterious start with the Arabic influences suits the lyrics. The nice details in the percussion are turned away at the end. The sound of the sea could have been a little more prominent at the start of ‘Sea of Sikelia’. At times the rhythm is catchy, the stacked vocals fit in well. I did have to peek in the (beautiful) lyric booklet to understand “Row, Row”. If the vocals here were lower and slower, the feeling of rowing a historic boat would have been better conveyed.

The rather soft vocals in ‘Scorns of time’ and the subdued music create a melancholy atmosphere. The details of “string instruments” are sometimes so subtle that you have to listen attentively to hear them. This beautiful, quiet song ends quite dully. ‘Wizards, witches and sorcerers’ is a nice, calm track. This one includes flute playing, acoustic guitar playing, and theatrically spoken words. ‘The Awakening’ is a varied, instrumental track. Again, the particular combination and/or variety of the various instruments and styles stands out positively.
The trumpet playing in ‘8’ is surprising. At first the rhythm is somewhat simpler, but later it becomes complex in structure. Without being old-fashioned, influences from decades ago can be heard. ‘The Blue light of a star’ has a compelling start. If you listen with headphones, you can hear nice details. The words are sung with passion, the guitar solo is fantastic. The subdued ending is beautiful. ‘The Weird Black Cross’ starts with the sound of a siren. Various sounds are added to the music. Occasionally there is an angry sound in the vocals and music. The sudden ending is well chosen. Piano sounds and light classical elements create a peaceful atmosphere in ‘Intangible’. This last song is complex, the changes are beautiful. The sound of the string instruments is beautifully clear.

Although the history is obvious, not all the songs come fully to life. There are a couple of reasons for this: Sometimes the sampling could have been a little better. At other times, the vocals are a bit more difficult to understand. The contrast of the rock/metal parts with the classical elements is a bit too small at times. Not so much the volume, but more high notes/low notes, so light atmosphere versus dark/deep. Otherwise, there are many pluses, for example the guitar playing, lovely keys and the (stacked) vocals. Not to forget the great variety of styles in which the balance has been kept.

Silver Nightmares – Apocalypsis

‘Wizards, witches and sorcerers’ is een mooie, kalme track. ‘The Awakening’ is een gevarieerde, instrumentale track.
‘The Blue light of a star’ heeft een meeslepende start.
