Peter Carlsohn’s The Rise – Out of the blue

Out Of The Blue’ is een feel good nummer.

Peter Carlsohn’s The Rise – Out of the blue

Bass player Peter Carlsohn became best known as the bass player of the Christian rock band ‘Jerusalem’. This band was well known, especially in the 80s. Since 2017 Peter is bass player for the metal band XT. Peter’s career started more than 50 years ago. Yet it is only now that he is releasing his debut solo album ‘Out of the blue‘. For the first time he has the lead vocals on an album. On some songs he sings along with Cutta John Kåre Gullestad.
According to Peter himself this is a melodic hard rock album on which the vocals are harmonious, but not too polished.

Holy Ground‘ has an energetic, instrumental start. Peter has a pleasant rough sounding voice. The predictably applied background vocals have a rousing effect. What is also nice is that the backing vocals are not completely in sync with lead vocals. There is a pleasant amount of bass. Yet this first song is much less rocking than you might expect.

Why‘ has a blues/rock base, in a pleasant (mid)tempo. There is a fine balance between the instruments. The vocal parts are sometimes a bit too polished due to the background vocals. The text can be interpreted religiously, but it remains accessible for atheists.

With ‘Sing The Song‘ the uptempo continues. The characteristic simple structure of the melodic rock makes it possible to sing along with the chorus.

The instrumental intro of ‘Shine Your Light‘ is compelling. The vocal parts are rather sugary, and the stacked vocals make it even more sweetened. The instrumental parts are dreamy. Due to the lack of a climax this song does not really get energized.

The organ playing and the steady tempo of the rhythm section make the intro of ‘I Want It All‘ attractive. The accessible vibe encourages you to sing along. The guitar tears wonderfully through the instrumental pieces. Furthermore, there are not many real ‘ear catchers’.

Because of the title ‘Gloria‘ I expect a sugary religious song, and so it turns out.
The more contrast gives the intro ‘Kiss From Above’. The structure of lyrics and music remains largely predictable. This risks a rut, this is broken through by glorious guitar playing.

Out Of The Blue‘ is a feel good song. For the hard rockers this title track might be a bit too cheerful.

Finally ‘The Dream‘, this one has a quiet start. Yet the intro invites to clap along. Here the promised land and the Kingdom is sung. For non-Christians this lyric is probably a bit too much related to faith. The sound of the whole is quite soft here as well.

It was to be expected that the bass would be more than ‘just’ part of the rhythm section. The bass is indeed clearly audible, but it is quite cautious and ‘goody goody’. Peter has more or less gone his own way with this solo album, you need some guts for that.

Of course, there are similarities with ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘XT’, but there are a lot of differences too. The melodic rock and the characteristics that go with it have the upper hand here. The melodies are certainly pleasant and the rhythms are often catchy. Because of the simple set-up, details in the music are somewhat suppressed. There is also relatively little space given to the organ and guitar in cool, instrumental pieces, the music is generally quite soft for hard rock. This catchy pop rock is accessible for a broad (Christian) audience.
