The name Paul Numi will be unknown to many people, but the name Peter Corijn will probably ring a bell. In the 80s, he played in the Belgian band ‘Angry Voices’. With this band, he was the support act for U2 and The Scabs, among others. After that, it was quiet for a while, but there was a comeback. In April 2020, he released the album ‘Chimera’ under the name Paul Numi. You can hear influences from bands like The Cure, Joy Division and Britpop. His second album ‘Parallel Lives’ was released on 1 November. The title is inspired by important choices or decisions in life, such as partner, job, moving and so on. With a different choice or decision, your life would be different. Actually, these fictional lives are parallel to each other. When you look back, sometimes you realise that you made the wrong decision. Or you are happy with the choice you made, or didn’t make.

The album starts with the catchy rhythm of the title track. Paul has a pleasant voice, the melody soon sticks in your head. Vocal parts are interspersed with instrumental pieces. The build-up with verse-refrain is quite predictable. During ‘Wake up’ I tap along with my foot, the bass is nicely present. The songs are uncomplicated and immediately catchy. Paul has a clear pronunciation and the lyrics are not complicated, so you can sing along pretty soon.
The 80’s can be heard especially in the intro of ‘Multitudes’. But there are more elements that fit in the 80s, such as the pleasant beat and the electronic sounds.

The songs that follow have an uplifting character, they make you feel good. There are few very special elements to be heard, yet every song has some nice things. For example, the vocals in ‘Something to hold on to’ are nicely stacked. And ‘I’ve got to make it’ contains lovely electronic sounds, they form a nice contrast with the bass. Because of the structure, it is soon predictable when you hear them again. In general, the outros could have had a bit more attention. Played live, I’m sure they will make something more special out of the way the songs end. The end of ‘Never I Believed’ is quite nice. The sound of the acoustic guitar playing during the intro of ‘Not Yet’ is surprising, because it is different from the rest. You can understand every word Paul sings. Vocals and music are subdued, now and then the music has a special sound. The fading end could have been a bit longer.

The structure of these nine songs is quite simple, and it all sounds quite nice. For most of the songs, the fact is that once you’ve heard them, you’ll recognise them again the next time you listen to them. On the one hand, this “low-threshold” sound is nice. On the other hand, if you listen to the album more often, there is a chance it will get boring. Now and then, more emotion could have come through. If you want to enjoy an uncomplicated album with a feel-good atmosphere, ‘Parallel Lives’ is the right choice.

Paul Numi – Parallel Lives

De naam Paul Numi zal voor veel mensen onbekend zijn, maar de naam Peter Corijn zal wellicht wel een belletje doen rinkelen. In de jaren ’80 speelde hij in de Belgische band ‘Angry Voices’. Met deze band speelde hij onder andere in het voorprogramma van U2 en The Scabs. Daarna was het een tijd stil, maar er kwam een comeback. In april 2020 bracht hij onder de naam Paul Numi het album ‘Chimera’ uit. Je hoort invloeden van bands zoals The Cure , Joy Division en Britpop. Zijn tweede album ‘Parallel Lives’ kwam 1 november uit. De titel is geïnspireerd op belangrijke keuzes of beslissingen in het leven, zoals partner, werk, verhuizing en dergelijke. Met een andere keuze of beslissing zou je leven anders zijn. Eigenlijk staan deze fictieve levens paralel naast elkaar. Als je terug kijkt, kom je er soms achter dat je een verkeerde beslissing hebt gemaakt. Of je bent blij met de keuze die je wel, of juist niet gemaakt hebt.

Het album start met het aanstekelijke ritme van de titeltrack. Paul heeft een aangename stem, de melodie blijft al snel in je hoofd kleven. Vocale delen worden prima afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken. De opbouw is met couplet-refrein vrij voorspelbaar. Tijdens ‘Wake up’ tap ik mee met mijn voet, de bas is lekker aanwezig. De nummers zijn ongecompliceerd, en liggen meteen lekker in het gehoor. Paul heeft een duidelijke uitspraak, en de teksten zijn niet ingewikkeld, zodat je al vrij snel mee kunt zingen.
De jaren ’80 hoor je vooral terug tijdens het intro van ‘Multitudes’. Maar er zijn meer elementen die in de jaren ’80 passen, zoals de aangename beat en de elektronische klanken.

De nummers die volgen hebben een opbeurend karakter, je krijgt er goede zin van. Er zijn weinig hele bijzondere elementen te horen, toch heeft ieder nummer leuke dingen. Zo is de zang in ‘Something to hold on to’ leuk gestapeld. En ‘I’ve got to make it’ bevast leuke elektronische geluidjes, deze vormen een leuk contrast met de bas. Door de structuur is het al snel voorspelbaar waneer je ze weer hoort. Over het algemeen hadden de outro’s wat meer aandacht mogen hebben. Live gespeeld zal er vast wel wat specialers van gemaakt worden van de manier waarop de nummer eindigen. Het einde van ‘Never I believed’ is nu a best leuk gedaan. De klanken van het akoestisch gitaarspel tijdens het intro van van ‘Not yet’ is verrassend, want het is anders dan de rest. Paul is woord voor woord te verstaan. Zang en muziek zijn ingetogen, af en toe heeft de muziek een bijzondere klank. Het wegstervende einde had iets langer mogen duren.

Deze negen nummers zijn vrij eenvoudig opgebouwd, en het klinkt allemaal best lekker. Voor de meeste nummers geldt: als je ze eenmaal gehoord hebt, herken je ze de volgende keer meteen weer. Aan de ene kant is deze laagdrempelige sound fijn. Aan de andere kant: als je het album vaker luistert, is er kans dat het gaat vervelen. Af en toe had er meer emotie in door mogen klinken. Als je wilt genieten van een ongecompliceerd album met een feel good sfeer, dan zit je met ‘Parallel Lives’ goed.
