Dave Bainbridge – To the Far Away

Dave Bainbridge is mainly known for the folk-prog band IONA, which he co-founded with David Fitzgerald. Dave is not only a composer and multi-instrumentalist, he is also a producer, arranger and sound mixer. Like many other musicians, Dave started composing and recording music during the pandemic. Several guest musicians contributed to the album ‘To the Far Away’, including Troy Donockley (flutes and Irish bagpipes) and Frank van Essen (drums and strings).

‘Sea Gazer’ starts with the rustling sound of waves, soft wordless vocals and a touch of music. Slowly tempo and volume increase a little. Unnoticed there are sometimes quite a few layers in the rather quiet music. Sally Minnear’s voice is regularly complemented with more layers of vocals. The folk influences are clearly present, but they are not dominant. Vocals and music are in harmony. The guitar playing is (as expected) very varied. This opening track ends with the rustling of the sea. During the first part of ‘The Girl and the Magical Sky’, you can hear singing birds, spoken words and subtle layers of music. More and more layers are added. A number of turns flow into one another. The sung words are soft and merge with the music. The music has countless details and the sound flows beautifully back and forth in the headphones. The instrumental part gets a rocking turn, then the vocals are added in the background. But the balance remains until the end.

Dave was moved by a news report about North India. Because of the lockdown, the Himalayas could be seen from a distance of 200 km, and that was the first time in 30 years. So many residents saw the Himalayas for the first time in their lives. Already during the intro of ‘Clear Skies’ I am touched by the subdued music. The details sound fantastically clear. The build up to more volume is great. The folk elements come out. You can hear the differences in tone in the drumming. The music is enormously complex, and you keep hearing new things. The end is pretty abrupt. ‘Ghost Light’ has nothing to do with ghosts or spirits, but with the theatre.
When the theatre is empty, often one lamp (in the middle of the stage) is left on. There are various theories about its origin, but the intention is clear: the artists/musicians keep returning. The beautiful start is compelling, sometimes there seems to be a slight reverb on the music, but that fits here. When the music is subdued, you can hear the clear vocals of Sally. Her voice is a nice blend with the vocals of Iain Hornal. They both do the lead and backing vocals. All the layers are completely in balance. During an instrumental piece, the guitar playing is finger licking. This beautiful, complex epic has many details and sometimes many layers.

Infinitude (Region of the Stars)’ was born after a spontaneous improvisation by Frank van Essen. The violins touches me immediately, the high clear tones are very tender. The lower tones are warm. The details of percussion and the wordless vocals are subtle. Those who are familiar with Frank’s album ‘Sanctum’ recognise his style. This song is enchantingly beautiful, and fades out beautifully. ‘To the Far Away’ has a bit more pace and volume, but it fits in with the previous song. Again, there is harmony and/or alternation between flute and violin playing in combination with the other instruments. Again, the relationship between Celtic influences and rock is very good. Moreover, there is a fine relationship between rhythm and the beautiful melody. First few seconds of ‘Fells Point’ are spherical, for the first time a turn feels a bit unnatural. But the other (sudden) changes that follow do not feel that way. In the end, the sound of the cymbals is a little disappointing. Although the songs differ enough, the album forms a whole. With ‘Something Astonishing’ as a very nice ending. Again, there are surprising elements, including some (quite extended) rests. Finally, you hear the sounds of the waves… the circle is complete.

It’s never bombastic, yet there’s quite a lot coming at you. The songs are complex, and you keep discovering new things. The relationship between all the instruments and between vocals and music is very good. The same goes for the Celtic influences and the rock.

After so much beauty, there is also a bonus CD. It starts with ‘Sea Gazer Acoustic Mix’. The sound of the waves seems a bit louder here, but that’s probably because it is an acoustic version. Again, there are many layers, a number of details can be heard better. The vocals and the acoustic guitar playing are coming into their own even better here. ‘Amidst the Storm’ has a quiet, dreamy atmosphere. You sometimes hear the fingers gliding over the strings. In ‘Cathedral Thinkers’ you can hear beautiful details on the cymbals and beautiful piano playing. If ‘Downtown Jam’ was played live, the audience would quickly clap along with the steady rhythm of this blues/rock song. It has great guitar playing and ditto organ sounds.

Again, ‘Infinitude (Region of the Stars)’ makes me very speechless. It is beautiful to listen to through the headphones, as well as quite loud through the speakers. This version is longer, so you can enjoy this beautiful song for longer. This bonus CD is really good! So are songs like ‘Rain and sun Demo’ and ‘Clear Skies Demo’. Ghost light’ is a bit shorter here with about 9,5 minutes. But it is all ear candy.

After two very short demos follows ‘Song For Charlie’. This is played sensitively and compellingly. A gentle beat is added, which takes away a bit of the emotion. It’s a good song to end with, but the most impressive tracks are ‘Infinitude (Region of the Stars)’ and ‘Ghost Light’. A single song/demo from the bonus CD ends not so nicely, or is very short. But for the rest, nothing but praise. ‘To The Far Away’ had some delay, but it was worth the wait, because this belongs to the top albums of 2021.

Dave Bainbridge – To the Far Away

Na twee hele korte demo’s volgt ‘Song For Charlie’.

2 gedachten over “Dave Bainbridge – To the Far Away”

      groetjes, Esther
