Even before anyone had heard of Corona or Covid, the Joost de Lange Band released the album ‘ ‘Lonesome Wolf‘. Like so many bands, this power trio did not sit still during the many lockdowns. Singer/guitarist Joost wrote the ten songs for the album Hypnotized, which will be released Oct. 28. This will also feature a mix of rock, blues, and grunge. Besides cool guitar solos by Joost, there is plenty of room for the rhythm section with Ramses Donvil on drums and bassist Mitchell Goor.
‘Won’t follow’ has a pleasant rocking intro that turns into a catchy rhythm. Immediately I tap along with my foot. Joost has a pretty clear pronunciation, so you can partially sing along with the chorus after a few listens. The instrumental piece has some nice guitar playing. You also hear a nice piece of drumming by Ramses. You could already hear Mitchell’s bass well in the opening track, but in ‘Mixed emotions’ the bass is really thickly played. The instrumental piece has several surprises. Played live, this is definitely going to provide a good vibe.
The title track has a beautiful slow and softly played intro, the atmosphere is mysterious. Joost sings appropriately slowly. Although he sings quite clearly, it would have been nice if you could have read along in a lyric booklet. The various changes in vocals and music are generally gradual. During the cool guitar solo, the rhythm section is steady. The sound is well distributed over the headphones. During a subdued piece, the vocals are very shortly (almost) solo, well done. The build-up to the end is slow, but intriguing. ‘Love, fear and uncertainy’ has a pleasant flow. Again Joost knows how to touch me with his guitar playing. Not only vocals and music constantly complement each other, also instrumentally everything is fine. Fans know that Ramses can play the cymbals with beautiful details, he shows that again here. Clearly a lot of work went into composing, because this song also has a cool outro. The songs were probably written with live performances in mind. They contain catchy parts will thrive live.
The short, quiet intro of ‘Take me higher’ transitions a little strangely to rock. The tempo is not very fast. But guitar and bass sound nice and heavy at times. During a super instrumental part, Joost plays all kinds of nice sound effects. After a quieter bit, tempo and volume are pushed up again. The backing vocals are subtle, but nicely added. Also ‘Rush’ has a nice intro, uplifting parts and a wonderful guitar solo. This last song extinguishes with guitar playing very nicely, slowly.
These ten songs do not have a “standard verse-rephrase” structure. Each song has nice changes and details in the music. Moreover, the intros and outros are also well thought out, and there is a pleasant distribution over the headphones. The bass and drums form a steady base on certain parts. This allows Joost to ” tear ” through them wonderfully with his guitar. Beyond that, Ramses and Mitchel are much more than “just” rhythm section. This trio reinforces each other, everything serving the whole. The sound on “Hypnotized” is sometimes a little more dull than on “Lonesome Wolf,” but that’s okay with this music. The Joost de Lange Band has clearly found its own style, you can hear the same ingredients on both albums: nice bass grooves, dynamic drumming and of course great guitar playing. After a few listens, the songs slowly but surely stick in your head. With this basis as a starting point, the Joost de Lange Band has made another fine album with ‘Hypnotized’.

Nog voordat ook maar iemand van Corona of Covid had gehoord, bracht de Joost de Lange Band het album ‘Lonesome Wolf’ uit. Net als zoveel bands zat ook dit power trio niet stil tijdens de vele lockdowns. Zanger/gitarist Joost schreef de tien nummers voor het album Hypnotized, dat 28 oktober uit komt. Ook hierop zal een mix van rock, blues, en grunge te horen zijn. Naast gave gitaarsolo’s van Joost, is er volop ruimte voor de ritmesectie met Ramses Donvil op drums en bassist Mitchell Goor.
‘Won’t follow’ heeft een aangename rockend intro, dat overgaat in een pakkend ritme. Ik tap direct mee met mijn voet. Joost heeft een vrij duidelijke uitspraak, zodat je na een paar keer luisteren het refrein deels mee kunt zingen. Het instrumentale stuk heeft lekker veel gitaarspel. Daarnaast hoor je een mooi staaltje drumwerk van Ramses. In openingsnummer hoorde je de bas van Mitchell al goed, maar in ‘Mixed emotions’ is de bas helemaal lekker dik aangezet. Het instrumentale stuk heeft meerdere verrassingen. Live gespeeld gaat dit zeker voor een goede vibe zorgen.
De titeltrack heeft een mooi langzaam en zacht gespeeld intro, de sfeer is mysterieus. Joost zingt passend langzaam. Hoewel hij vrij duidelijk zingt, was het toch leuk geweest als je mee had kinnen lezen in een tekstboekje. De diverse veranderingen in zang en muziek verlopen over het algemeen geleidelijk. Tijdens de gave gitaarsolo is de ritmesectie steady. Het geluid goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Tijdens een ingetogen stukje is de zang heel even (bijna) solo, mooi gedaan. De opbouw naar het einde is langzaam, maar intrigerend. ‘Love, fear and uncertainty’ heeft een aangename flow. Weer weet Joost mij te raken met zijn gitaarspel. Niet alleen zang en muziek vullen elkaar constant aan, ook instrumentaal is alles prima in orde. Fans weten dat Ramses mooi gedetailleerd kan spelen op de cimbalen, dat laat hij ook hier weer te horen. Er is duidelijk veel werk gestoken in het componeren, want ook dit nummer heeft een gaaf outro. De nummers zijn vast geschreven met live optredens in het achterhoofd. Er zittende pakkende delen in die het live goed zullen doen.
Het korte, rustige intro van ‘Take me higher’ gaat een klein beetje vreemd over naar rock. Het tempo is niet heel hoog. Maar gitaar en bas klinken soms lekker zwaar. Tijdens een super instrumentaal deel laat Joost allerlei mooie geluidseffecten horen. Na een wat rustiger stukje worden tempo en volume weer omhoog gestuwd. De achtergrondzang is subtiel, maar prima toegevoegd. Ook ‘Rush’ heeft een leuk intro, opzwepende delen en een heerlijke gitaarsolo. Dit laatste nummer dooft met gitaarspel heel mooi, langzaam uit.
Deze tien nummers hebben geen “standaard couplet-refrein” opbouw. Ieder nummer heeft mooie veranderingen en details in de muziek. Bovendien is er ook goed nagedacht over de intro’s en outro’s, en er is leuk gespeeld met de verdeling over de koptelefoon. De bas en de drums vormen op bepaalde stukken een steady basis. Hierdoor kan Joost er lekker door heen “scheuren” met zijn gitaar. Daarbuiten zijn Ramses en Mitchell veel meer dan “alleen maar” ritme sectie. Dit drietal versterkt elkaar, alles staat in dienst van het geheel. Het geluid op ‘Hypnotized’ soms iets groezeliger is dan op ‘Lonesome Wolf’, maar dat mag bij deze muziek. De Joost de Lange Band heeft duidelijk zijn eigen stijl gevonden hoor je op beide albums ongeveer dezelfde ingrediënten terug: lekker bas grooves, dynamisch drumwerk en natuurlijke heerlijk gitaarspel. Na een paar keer luisteren, blijven de nummers langzaam maar zeker in je hoofd kleven. Met deze basis als uitgangspunt heeft de Joost de Lange Band met ‘Hypnotized’ weer een prima album gemaakt.
