Deni Marinovic received his first electric guitar as a teenager, and taught himself to play the guitar, now he is a multi-instrumentalist. About four years ago his EP ‘Freedom Bells‘ was released, this was (incl artwork) almost a one man project. Dreamland’ is a full CD, again he has played almost everything himself. Only the drumming was done by Eric Tuznik.

‘Don’t Forget To Dream’ has a spherical start, then you hear the warm sounds of acoustic guitar. Meanwhile, the spherical elements have died out, and there are multiple layers of music. The percussion is nicely added, after which rock-metal influences are added. Various twists and turns follow, the balance remains. Moreover, the make use of the division in the headphones is lovely. There are nice details, some you only hear after a few listens. This optimistic opening track ends spherically. Because of the sounds of wind, percussion and guitar playing, you can hear at the start of ‘Great Plains Vagabond’ that this song is inspired by westerns. The rhythm is exhilarating, the bass is pleasantly present. Again there is the ultimate balance between rhythm and melody. There are also details of guitar, among others, plus one or more voices. The changes flow seamlessly into each other. The sound of the drums is nicely full and round. The sudden ending is well chosen.

Deni has a passion for the mountains with their peaks and canyons, this is why he created ‘Over The Mountains’. There is a melange and alternation of acoustic and electric guitar playing. Sometimes a few piano sounds are sprinkled through. The rhythm section forms a very good basis. The sounds of string instruments are nicely warm and realistic. At the end, the track has a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, and so the whole thing extinguishes nicely slowly. It gives me the relaxed feeling of being outside and watching it slowly get dark. In ‘Temples Are Made Of Sand’ you can hear Arabic influences. The details in the percussion are sometimes subtle, but clear in sound, the flow of the rhythm is pleasant. The Arabic influences are nicely interspersed with rock/metal. In the background you can hear the occasional sound of “string instruments”, the bass grooves are cool. Some elements return maybe a little too often, but the harmony between everything remains. ‘Moonlight Shadows’, is a very good song inspired by Ennio Morricone. This ties in nicely with ‘Arizona Sunset’, in which Deni plays the flute. The build up to the end is special.

‘Blues For Gary’ is different from the previous songs, because you can clearly hear the influences of Gary Moore here. Yet the songs fit together, well done. The bass is steady throughout the song. The guitar playing is superb and even the rests are well played. This is followed by ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 1)’ and ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 2)’. The first part starts very calmly, yet there are plenty of details. The vocals are occasionally inserted as instruments. It seems to end, but it is a rest followed by a turn. A short time later, part 2 follows, again the rock/metal elements are perfectly balanced with the quieter parts. The same goes for the division between rhythm and melody. The build up to the end is great.

Especially in the powerfully played parts, the sound of the cymbals is a bit underwhelming. Furthermore, the timbre of the various drums is well done. The same goes for all the other instruments. Sometimes there are quite a few layers in the music, moreover there are many twists and details. It’s complex in structure, but it’s relaxing to listen to. Incredible that it’s almost a one-man project.

Deni Marinovic kreeg als tiener zijn eerste elektrische gitaar, en leerde zichzelf gitaarspelen, inmiddels is hij multi-instrumentalist. Zo’n vier jaar geleden kwam zijn EP ‘Freedom Bells’ uit, dit was (incl artwork) bijna een one man project. ‘Dreamland’ is een full cd, ook nu heeft hij bijna alles zelf gespeeld. Alleen het drumwerk is gedaan door Eric Tuznik.

‘Don’t Forget To Dream’ heeft een sferische start, daarna hoor je de warme klanken van akoestisch gitaar. Ondertussen zijn de sferische elementen uitgedoofd, en zijn er meerdere laagjes muziek. De percussie is mooi toegevoegd, waarna er rock-metal invloeden bij komen. Er volgen diverse wendingen, de balans blijft. Bovendien is er leuk gespeeld met de verdeling in de koptelefoon. Er zijn leuke details, sommige hoor je pas na een paar keer luisteren. Deze optimistische openingstrack eindigt sferisch. Door de geluiden van wind, de percussie en het gitaarspel hoor je bij de start van ‘Great Plains Vagabond’ dat dit nummer geïnspireerd is op westerns. Het ritme is opzwepend, de bas is aangenaam aanwezig. Weer is er de ultieme balans tussen ritme en melodie. Daarnaast zijn er details van onder andere gitaar, plus één of meerdere stemmen. De veranderingen lopen naadloos in elkaar over. Het geluid van de drums is mooi vol en rond. Het plotselinge einde is goed gekozen.

Deni heeft een passie voor de bergen met hun pieken en ravijnen, hierdoor ontstond ’Over The Mountains’. Er is een melange en afwisseling van akoestisch en elektrisch gitaarspel. Soms worden er enkele pianoklanken doorheen gestrooid. De ritmesectie vormt een zeer goede basis. De klanken van strijkinstrumenten zijn mooi warm en realistisch. Op het laatst heeft de track een aangename relaxte sfeer, en zo dooft het geheel mooi langzaam uit. Het geeft me het ontspannen gevoel van buiten zijn en het langzaam donker zien worden. In ‘Temples Are Made Of Sand’ hoor je Arabische invloeden. De details in de percussie zijn soms subtiel, maar helder van klank, de flow van het ritme is aangenaam. De Arabische invloeden worden mooi afgewisseld met rock/metal. Op de achtergrond hoor je af en toe het geluid van “strijkinstrumenten”, de bas grooves zijn gaaf. Een aantal elementen keren misschien iets te vaak terug, maar de harmonie tussen alles blijft bestaan. ‘Moonlight Shadows’, is een zeer goed nummer dat geïnspireerd is op Ennio Morricone. Dit sluit mooi aan bij ‘Arizona Sunset’, waarin Deni fluit speelt. De opbouw naar het einde is bijzonder.

‘Blues For Gary’ is anders dan de voorgaande nummers, want je hoort hier duidelijk de invloeden van Gary Moore terug. Toch passen de nummers wel bij elkaar, knap gedaan. De bas is steady door het nummer heen verweven. Het gitaarspel is heerlijk en zelfs de rusten zijn goed gespeeld. Hierna volgen nog ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 1)’ en ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 2)’. Het eerste deel start heel kalm, toch zijn er volop details. De zang is af en toe ingezet als instrument. Het lijkt te eindigen, maar het is een rust gevolgd door een wending. Korte tijd later volgt deel 2, ook hier zijn de rock/metal elementen perfect in evenwicht met de rustigere delen. Datzelfde geldt voor de verdeling tussen ritme en melodie. De opbouw naar het einde is groots.

Vooral in de krachtig gespeelde delen is het geluid van de cimbalen wat minder mooi. Verder komt klankkleur van de verschillende drums komen goed tot zijn recht. Dat geldt ook voor alle andere instrumenten. Soms zijn er best behoorlijk wat laagjes in de muziek, bovendien zijn er ook veel wendingen en details. Het is complex van opzet, maar het is relaxed om naar te luisteren. Onvoorstelbaar dat het grotendeels een one-man project is.
