Singer/bassist Robert Berry is known from Ambrosia, Alliance, Hush and many others. Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer asked him to replace Greg Lake (of ELP). The band name became “3. After more members joined, this was changed to ‘3.2’. The live album ‘Alive at ProgStock’ features the musical history of Robert Berry. This special album consists of 2 CDs and a DVD.

Before the first note is played, there is a few minutes of chatting. Robert thanks his fans for making a living out of music for decades, he also praises his music friends. ‘Life Beyond L.A.’ is the title track of Ambrosia’s third album. The lyrics are easy to understand, so you can sing along with this “oldie”. The sound could have been a little fuller, but the whole is well distributed on the headphones. During the singing together, the voices form a nice blend. After this song, Robert talks about Carl Palmer, among other things. He talks clearly, yet the story is a bit long for a CD.

No One Else to Blame has a beautifully subdued start. The sound here is clear. As tempo and volume increase, the sound becomes slightly duller. The twists and turns (as expected) flow well. During the subdued parts, Jimmy Keegan plays beautifully gentle cymbals. There is cool guitar playing, and very varied keyboard work. And last but not least, the bass is clearly present. You can enjoy songs like ‘Desde La Vida’, Powerful Man and many others. For each song there is an introduction, Robert tells things in a pleasant way. But I can imagine that you would rather listen to the music nonstop.

The song ‘Minstrel in the Gallery’ by Jethro Tull was written by Ian Anderson and Martin Barre. After a feel good intro, there are several twists in tempo and volume. The minimalist piece is beautifully clear in sound. Both instrumentally and vocally it’s all good, the vocal outbursts are fine. This cover has a nice build up to the end. The guitar playing in “You Do or You Don’t” is subdued. You can hear the passion and emotion in the vocals, the whole thing is very convincing.

CD 2 starts with spherical music, soon you notice that this is ‘Roundabout’ (by Yes). The vocals are very good, the guitar playing is wonderful and there are cool bass grooves. The vocals are almost solo for a while, again you notice how beautiful the voice is. Also in the harmony vocals, the fantastic blend of voices stands out. The end of the song is stretched nice and long for this live show.

The band plays all beautiful songs, some perhaps more famous than others. In ‘Deck the Halls’ Jimmy has a big part in the vocals, his singing is also good. Of course Genesis cannot be missed, ‘Watcher of the Skies’ is a favourite of many. The instrumental intro and the first few sentences give me goosebumps. Sometimes the goosebumps ebb away but they always return. The extensive applause is very justified.
Finally, ‘Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression, Part 1)’. Because the pace is fast and the build-up is complex, there is a lot coming at you at times. There is no encore, so the CD ends somewhat unexpectedly. After each song you hear applause, but during the songs you hardly hear the audience. The live experience is not as great because of this.

DVD:
The lighting and camera setup are simple, but sufficient to capture the musicians reasonably (well). The close ups could have been a bit better. But we have been spoiled by the sky-high budgets of the superbands. Because the anecdotes can also be heard on the CDs, it is no longer surprising on the DVD. Although the whole thing could have been captured in a more detailed way, you can see the good harmony that exists between the musicians. If you were expecting a DVD of high quality it might be a bit disappointing. The DVD could possibly have been called “Bonus DVD. But this album is a great overview of Robert Berry’s impressive carrière.

Zanger/bassist Robert Berry kennen we onder andere van Ambrosia, Alliance, Hush en vele andere. Keith Emerson en Carl Palmer vroegen hem om Greg Lake (van ELP) te vervangen. De bandnaam werd ‘3’. Nadat er meer leden bij kwamen werd dit veranderd in ‘3.2’. Op het live album ‘Alive at ProgStock’ komt de muziek geschiedenis van Robert Berry voorbij. Dit speciale album bestaat uit 2 CD’s en een DVD.

Voordat de eerste noot gespeeld wordt, wordt er een paar minuten gepraat. Robert bedankt zijn fans voor het feit dat hij al decennia lang van de muziek kan leven, daarbij roemt hij ook zijn muziekvrienden. ‘Life Beyond L.A.’ is de titeltrack van het derde album van Ambrosia. De songtekst is goed te verstaan, zodat je mee kunt zingen met dit “oudje”. Het geluid had iets voller mogen zijn, maar het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Tijdens de samenzang vormen de stemmen een mooie blend. Na dit nummer vertelt Robert onder andere over Carl Palmer. Hij praat duidelijk, toch is het verhaal wel wat lang voor op een cd.

‘No One Else to Blame ‘ heeft een prachtige ingetogen start. Het geluid is hier helder. Als tempo en volume toenemen, wordt het geluid iets doffer. De wendingen verlopen (zoals verwacht) goed. Tijdens de ingetogen delen speelt Jimmy Keegan mooi zacht gespeeld op cimbalen. Er is gaaf gitaarspel, en zeer gevarieerd toetsenwerk. En last but not least, de bas is duidelijk aanwezig. Het is op en top genieten van nummers zoals ‘Desde La Vida’, Powerful Man en vele andere. Voor ieder nummer is er een introductie, Robert vertelt de dingen op een leuke manier. Maar ik kan me voorstellen dat je liever nonstop naar de muziek zou luisteren.

Het minimalistische stukje is mooi helder van geluid. Zowel instrumentaal als vocaal is het allemaal goed, de vocale uithalen zijn prima. Deze cover heeft een mooie opbouw naar het einde. Het gitaarspel in ‘You Do or You Don’t’ is ingetogen. Je hoort de passie en emotie in de zang, het geheel is heel overtuigend.

CD 2 start met sferische muziek, al snel merk je dat dit ‘Roundabout’ (van Yes) is. De zang is heel goed, het gitaarspel is heerlijk en er zijn gave bass grooves. De zang is even bijna solo, weer valt op hoe mooi de stem is. Ook in de samenzang valt de fantastische blend van stemmen op. Het einde van het nummer wordt lekker lang gerekt voor deze live show.

De band speelt allemaal mooie nummers, de één is misschien wat bekender dan de andere. In ‘Deck the Halls’ heeft Jimmy een groot aandeel in de zang, ook zijn zang is goed. Natuurlijk mag Genesis niet ontbreken, ‘Watcher of the Skies’ is bij velen favoriet. Het instrumentale intro en de eerste zinnen bezorgen mij kippenvel. Soms ebt het kippenvel beetje weg maar keert steeds weer terug. Het uitgebreide applaus is zeer terecht.
Als laatste ‘Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression, Part 1)’. Doordat het tempo hoog ligt en opbouw complex is, komt er met vlagen veel op je af. Er is geen toegift te horen, zodat de cd wat onverwacht is afgelopen. Na ieder nummer hoor je applaus, maar tijdens de nummers hoor je het publiek bijna niet. De live beleving is hierdoor minder groot.

DVD:
Het licht en de opstelling van de camera’s zijn eenvoudig, maar voldoende om de muzikanten redelijk (goed) in beeld te brengen. De close ups hadden wat beter gekund. Maar we zijn verwend door de torenhoge budgetten van de superbands. Doordat de anekdotes ook op de cd’s te horen zijn, is het op de DVD niet verrassend meer. Hoewel het geheel wat beter gedetailleerd in beeld had mogen komen, zie je af en toe wel de goede harmonie die er tussen de muzikanten is. Als je een DVD van hoge kwaliteit verwachtte valt het misschien wat tegen. De DVD had eventueel ‘Bonus DVD’ genoemd kunnen worden. Maar dit album is een prachtig overzicht van de imposante carrière van Robert Berry.
