Broadside is een Amerikaanse pop punk/rock band. ‘Into the raging sea’ is hun nieuwste album. Hierop staan energieke, alternatieve popnummers, met als thema doorzettingsvermogen, voortdurende groei en onvermijdelijke vernieuwing. Frontman Ollie Baxxter is in armoede opgegroeid, maar daar schaamt hij zich niet voor. Toen hij elf was, overleed zijn stiefvader, hij voelde zich in de steek gelaten in een ‘kolkende zee’.
De vrij kalme start van het eerste deel van ‘The Raging Sea’ benadert eerder de sing en songwriter sfeer dan punk/rock. De poppy structuur zorgt voor toegankelijkheid, de leuke veranderingen in tempo en volume zorgen voor een goede opbouw. Op een gegeven moment hoor je een hoop woede en frustratie in de woorden die Ollie zingt. Dat geldt zowel voor de tekst als de emotie die hij laat horen. Deze sterke titeltrack vergeet je hierdoor niet snel.
De pop rock in ‘Foolish Believer’ is opzwepend. De prettige stem van Ollie klinkt af en toe vervormd. Terwijl hij op andere momenten een heerlijk ruw randje op zijn stem heeft.
Tijdens het eerste stukje van ‘Overdramatic‘ ligt het tempo vrij hoog. Op het moment dat Ollie begint te zingen, daalt het tempo van de muziek een beetje. De opzwepende sfeer blijft bestaan.
De structuur de nummers is couplet-refrein. Doordat er genoeg variatie is in tempo en volume blijven de nummers voldoende boeien. De timing van de wendingen is door deze structuur meestal wel voorspelbaar. Clichés in tekst zorgen ervoor dat je makkelijk kunt meezingen met de opzwepende nummers. Niet alle nummers hebben een feel-good sfeer. ‘Clarity’ is deels melancholisch, en een stukje langzamer. Als tempo verhoogd is, klinkt er doorzettingsvermogen in Ollie’s stem.
Zang en muziek blijven in balans. Als de muziek in ‘Breathe You In’ iets meer naar de rock gaat, gaat Ollie’s stem hierin mee. In de poppy delen heeft zijn stem een vrolijke tonatie. Na dit feel-good nummer gaat het vol gas verder met ‘The Setting Sun’. De achtergrondzang is niet heel origineel toegepast, maar zorgt wel voor een voor extra positieve vibe. De daling in tempo en volume is verrassend. Op het verwachte moment gaan tempo en volume weer omhoog. De wending terug naar een klein gespeeld deel is vrij voorspelbaar. Dit nummer dooft mooi uit.
De pianoklanken in ‘Burning At Both Ends’ zijn verrassend. Ollie zingt heel gevoelig, hij is overtuigend, ik geloof zijn verdriet. De emotie in zang en muziek nemen niet verder toe. De overtuiging neemt wat af, waardoor de ballad wat melancholiek wordt.
De openingstrack is een goed gekozen titeltrack, want het is het sterkste nummer, waarin de emotie het duidelijkst naar voren komt. In verschillende nummers is de stem van Ollie af en toe vervormd, meestal past dat wel in het totaal. Buiten die vervorming valt op hoe veelzijdig zijn stem is, van teder naar een ruwe punk/rock stem. De nummers zijn soms romantisch, een andere keer weer melancholisch. Maar er is soms ook woede of frustratie te horen. De nummers zijn toegankelijk voor een breed publiek. Want de balans tussen pop, punk en rock is goed verdeeld.

Broadside is an American pop punk/rock band. ”Into the raging sea” is their latest album. It features energetic, alternative pop songs on the theme of perseverance, continuous growth and inevitable renewal. Frontman Ollie Baxxter grew up in poverty, but he’s not ashamed of that. When he was eleven, his stepfather died, he felt abandoned in a ‘raging sea’.
The rather calm start of the first part of ‘The Raging Sea‘ approaches the sing and songwriter atmosphere rather than punk/rock. The poppy structure provides accessibility, the nice changes in tempo and volume make for a good build-up. At some point you hear a lot of anger and frustration in the words Ollie sings. This applies to both the lyrics and the emotion he expresses. You won’t easily forget this strong title track.
The pop rock in ‘Foolish Believer‘ is exhilarating. Ollie’s pleasant voice sounds distorted from time to time. While on other moments he has a nice rough edge on his voice.
During the first part of ‘Overdramatic‘ the tempo is quite high. After this feel-good song it continues full throttle with ‘The Setting Sun‘. The stacked vocals are not very original, but they do make for a for extra positive vibe. The decrease in pace and volume is surprising. At the expected moment tempo and volume go up again. The turn back to a small played part is quite predictable. This song extinguishes nicely.
Because there is enough variation in tempo and volume, the songs remain captivating enough. The timing of the twists and turns is usually predictable because of this structure. Clichés in lyrics make it easy to sing along with the rousing songs. Not all songs have a feel-good atmosphere. ‘Clarity‘ is partly melancholic, and a bit slower. When the tempo is up, you can hear perseverance in Ollie’s voice.
Vocals and music stay in balance. When the music in ‘Breathe You In‘ goes a bit more to rock, Ollie’s voice goes along with it. In the poppy parts his voice has a cheerful tonation. After this feel-good song it continues full throttle with ‘The Setting Sun‘. The background vocals are not very original, but they give an extra positive vibe. The decrease in pace and volume is surprising. At the expected moment tempo and volume go up again. The turn back to a small played part is quite predictable. This song extinguishes nicely.
The piano sounds in ‘Burning At Both Ends‘ are surprising. Ollie sings very thoughtful, he is convincing, I believe his sadness. The emotion in vocals and music doesn’t increase any further. The conviction decreases a bit, which makes the ballad a bit melancholic.
The opening track is a well-chosen title track, because it is the strongest song, in which the emotion comes most clearly to the fore. In several songs Ollie’s voice is distorted from time to time, most of the time it fits in the total. Apart from that distortion it’s striking how versatile his voice is, from tender to a rough punk/rock voice. The songs are sometimes romantic, another time melancholic. But sometimes anger or frustration can be heard as well. The songs are accessible to a wide audience. Because the balance between pop, punk and rock is well distributed.
