‘Virgin Grounds’ is the new CD by composer/keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel. On this, there are only two new songs: ‘Departure’ and ‘Arrival’. The rest comes from ‘Orion’ (1991), some of the tracks rearranged. You can hear the “synth atmosphere” of the late ’80s early ’90s as early as ‘Departure’, and it persists throughout. Overall, the sound is quite chilly, but that suits the title of the tracks. Although the pace is a bit faster on some tracks than others, the songs are calm in structure. Everything fits together well, there are no unexpected changes. If you listen intensely, there might be too little happening. The music is mysterious at times.’Virgin Grounds’ is very different from the prog rock of Kayak, Camel and Earth and Fire. It is also very different from, for example, his folk/baroque album ‘Velvet Amour’. This album is for fans of “old school” keyboard albums.

‘Virgin Grounds’ is de nieuwe cd van componist/ toetsenist Ton Scherpenzeel. Hierop staan slechts twee nieuwe nummers: ‘Departure’ en ‘Arrival’. De rest komt van ‘Orion’ (1991), een deel van de tracks is opnieuw gearrangeerd. De “synthesizer sfeer” van eind jaren ’80 begin ’90 hoor je al bij ‘Departure’, en blijft de hele tijd bestaan. Over het algemeen is het geluid vrij kil, maar dat past wel bij de titel van de tracks. Hoewel het tempo bij de ene track iets hoger ligt dan bij de ander, zijn de nummers rustig van opzet. Alles sluit goed bij elkaar aan, er zijn geen onverwachte veranderingen. Als je intens luistert, gebeurt er misschien te weinig. De muziek is met vlagen mysterieus.‘Virgin Grounds’ is heel anders dan de prog rock van Kayak, Camel en Earth and Fire. Het is ook heel anders dan bijvoorbeeld zijn folk/barok album ‘Velvet Amour’.
