Whoever says Focus, says Thijs van Leer. The band has been around for over 50 years, fans of all ages visit their concerts. So too on Sunday afternoon 29 October in De Bosuil in Weert. The youngest fan was still in primary school age.
Before the concert started, visitors were welcomed by Peter Verkennis of De Bosuil. He told about the “listen or whisper” action. “If you want to talk do it very quietly. In the pause you can of course talk loudly” he said. He then introduced Thijs van Leer with Focus. Thijs greeted the audience by saying, “Good afternoon, what a full house”. Despite the crowd, it was already quiet at the first whistle tones of ‘Focus 1′. Thijs’ wordless singing was supported by the sounds of a “church choir”. There was eye contact between Thijs and guitarist Menno Gootjes, his guitar playing was oustading. Udo Pannekeet had a quiet way of performing, but his bass (with 6 strings) was easy to hear. The sound was well balanced and beautifully toned. So was Pierre van der Linden’s drum kit. You could hear the pitch differences of the drums, also the cymbals had a warm sound. Especially just before the end of this opening track, he showed a fine performance of drumming.
Eruption
There was a hesitant clapping from the audience with House of the King. The applause at the end of this first big Focus hit was convincing. Eruption started with Thijs and Menno very subdued. Pierre and Udo remained quiet for a while. The men were clearly in tune with each other, because with one look from Thijs, Pierre and Udo started playing. They played fanatically in the up-tempo parts. In the quiet parts, Menno turned the tone knobs on his guitar with concentration, creating special effects. This was rightly rewarded with intermittent applause. The complex turns and rests were played perfectly. Thijs stepped out from behind his Hammond and calmly walked to the centre of the stage. At high tempo, light tones of the flute swirled through the hall. This formed a nice combination with Udo’s bass playing. On “command” from Thijs, the fans imitated his fantasy language; he visibly enjoyed this. Again there was extra applause. Thijs took his place behind his Hammond again for an up-tempo part, in which Pierre showed off a lovely solo. This wonderful epic of about 20 minutes had a fantastic build-up to the end.
The audience was respectful, as they kept quiet during ‘Focus 7′. This made this subdued, compelling song stand out even more. Thijs’ subtle, wordless vocals melded beautifully with everything else. During ‘Sylvia’ the atmosphere was exuberant, after which it was time for a short break.
For Bert
After a break, they started with the uptempo ‘All Hens on Deck’. Thijs dedicated ‘For Bert’ to their former bass player Bert Ruiter, who unfortunately is no longer with us. The atmosphere in the venue changed along with this sensitive song. Pierre used drumsticks with a soft end here. ‘Focus 2 ‘ matched this just fine. As did ‘La Cathedrale de Strasbourg’, with its extraordinary, mysterious ending. An old hit like ‘Harem Scarem’ was of course not to be missed. Menno’s subdued solo was phenomenal, goose-bump moment. As soon as Menno raised the neck of his guitar in the air, Pierre and Udo started playing again. Udo also treated the audience to a beautiful, extended solo. After non-verbal communication by Udo, Pierre played again. A beautiful interplay of the rhythm section evolved.
Thijs’ flute solos remained impressive. Occasionally he played flute with one hand, and the organ subtly with the other. Sometimes complemented by “choral singing”. The audience listened breathlessly, this made these moments extra special. Thijs’ yodelling changed the atmosphere to cheerful :’Hocus Pocus’ was played last. Many visitors “sang” along with the rising notes. The band was clearly enjoying themselves. Pierre demonstrated that he still has enough energy : he played a solo of more than 6 minutes. The encore was ‘Focus 3’. The party mood that Hocus Pocus created changed, but the experience remained fantastic. Thijs thanked the people for visiting, and De Bosuil for taking good care of them. “We feel completely at home here, thank you very much,” he spoke. Not only the audience had enjoyed this afternoon. Focus too had had a good time. Gratefully, they received the long closing applause. Afterwards, the band members took plenty of time for the fans. They autographed, posed for photos and even had time for a chat.
Focus voelde zich compleet thuis in De Bosuil
Wie Focus zegt, zegt Thijs van Leer. De band bestaat ruim 50 jaar, fans van allerlei leeftijden bezoeken hun concerten. Zo ook op zondagmiddag 29 oktober in De Bosuil in Weert. De jongste fan was nog in de basisschool leeftijd.
Voor aanvang van het concert werden de bezoekers welkom geheten door Peter Verkennis van De Bosuil. Hij vertelde over de actie “luister of fluister”. “Als je wilt praten doe het dan heel stilletjes. In de pauze mag je natuurlijk wel luid praten” zei hij. Vervolgens introduceerde hij Thijs van Leer met Focus. Thijs begroette de aanwezigen met de woorden: “Goedemiddag, wat een volle zaal”. Ondanks de drukte, was het al stil bij de eerste fluittonen van ‘Focus 1’. De woordeloze zang van Thijs werd ondersteund door de klanken van een “kerkkoor”. Er was oogcontact tussen Thijs en gitarist Menno Gootjes, zijn gitaarspel was gaaf. Udo Pannekeet had een rustige manier van performen, maar zijn bas (met 6 snaren) was goed te horen. Het geluid was goed in balans en mooi van klank. Dat gold ook voor het drumstel van Pierre van der Linden. Je hoorde de toonhoogte verschillen van de drums, ook de cimbalen hadden een warme sound. Vooral vlak voor het einde van deze openingstrack liet hij een mooi staaltje drumwerk horen.
Eruption
Vanuit de zaal werd er aarzelend meegeklapt met House of the King. Het applaus aan eind van deze eerste grote hit van Focus was wel overtuigend. Eruption startte met Thijs en Menno heel ingetogen. Pierre en Udo bleven nog even stil. De mannen zijn duidelijk op elkaar ingespeeld, want met één blik van Thijs begonnen Pierre en Udo te spelen. Zij speelden fanatiek in de up-tempo delen. In de rustige stukken draaide Menno geconcentreerd aan de tone-knoppen van zijn gitaar, zo creëerde bij bijzondere effecten. Dit werd terecht met een tussentijds applaus beloond. De complexe wendingen en de rusten werden perfect gespeeld. Thijs kwam achter zijn orgel vandaan en liep rustig naar het midden van het podium. In hoog tempo dwarrelden lichte tonen van de dwarsluit door de zaal. Dit vormde een mooie combinatie met het basspel van Udo. Op “commando” van Thijs imiteerden de fans zijn fantasietaal, hij genoot hier zichtbaar van. Weer was er een extra applaus. Thijs nam weer plaats achter zijn Hammond voor een up-tempo deel, waarin Pierre een mooie solo liet horen. Deze gave epic van zo’n 20 minuten had een fantastisch opbouw naar het einde.
Het publiek was respectvol, want ook tijdens ‘Focus 7’ was men stil. Hierdoor kwam dit ingetogen, meeslepende nummer extra goed tot zijn recht. De subtiele, woordeloze zang van Thijs smolt mooi samen met het geheel. Tijdens ‘Sylvia’ werd de sfeer uitgelaten, hierna was het tijd voor een korte pauze.
For Bert
Na de pauze werd gestart met het uptempo ‘All Hens on Deck’. Thijs droeg ‘For Bert’ op aan hun oude bassist Bert Ruiter, die er helaas niet meer is. De sfeer in de zaal veranderde mee met dit gevoelige nummer. Pierre gebruikte hier drumstokken met een zacht uiteinde. ‘Focus 2 ‘ sloot hier prima bij aan. Net als ‘La Cathedrale de Strasbourg’, met het bijzondere, mysterieuze einde. Een oude hit zoals ‘Harem Scarem’ mocht natuurlijk niet ontbreken. De ingetogen solo van Menno was fenomenaal, kippenvel momentje. Op het moment dat Menno de hals van zijn gitaar in de lucht stak, begonnen Pierre en Udo weer te spelen. Ook Udo trakteerde de aanwezigen op een mooie, uitgebreide solo. Na non-verbale communicatie door Udo speelde Pierre weer mee. Er ontstond een mooi samenspel van de ritmesectie.
De dwarsfluit solo’s van Thijs bleven indrukwekkend. Af en toe speelde hij met één hand fluit, met de andere subtiel orgel. Soms aangevuld met “koorzang”. Het publiek luisterde ademloos, dit maakte deze momenten extra speciaal. Door het jodelen van Thijs veranderde de sfeer naar vrolijk :’Hocus Pocus’ werd als laatste gespeeld. Veel bezoekers “zongen” mee met de hoger wordende tonen. De band had er duidelijk plezier in. Pierre liet zien en horen dat hij nog energie genoeg heeft: hij speelde een solo van meer dan 6 minuten. De toegift werd ‘Focus 3’. De feeststemming die Hocus Pocus teweeg bracht veranderde, maar de beleving bleef fantastisch. Thijs bedankte de mensen voor het komen, en De Bosuil voor de goede zorgen. “We voelen ons hier compleet thuis, dank jullie wel”, sprak hij. Niet alleen het publiek had van deze middag genoten. Ook Focus had het goed naar hun zin gehad. Dankbaar namen ze het lange slotapplaus in ontvangst. Na afloop namen de bandleden ruim de tijd voor de fans. Ze signeerden, poseerden voor foto’s en hadden zelfs tijd voor een praatje.
