Damian Wilson has been active for 30 years as frontman of several bands. He celebrated this anniversary with his ‘One Knight Only’ tour, which featured five musicians. Some of these include band members of Lalu, of which Damian is frontman. Other bands Damian has been a part of include Threshold, Landmarq and Headspace. He has also performed several times on stage with Ayreon. It took some time to see whether the 3 November show at De Bosuil in Weert could go ahead. The show a day earlier had to be halved because Damian was taken to hospital during that show. Fortunately, the show could go on!
Well before the doors opened, the first fans were already waiting. Damian made the wait a lot more fun for them: he came for a chat, with jokes, of course. He told them that the doctor told him to keep a little quiet. But anyone who knows Damian knows he is unable to do that.
That’s Why We Came
A few minutes ahead of schedule, the band members appeared on stage. Damian last, he walked straight to the edge of the stage to sing ‘Sanity’s End’ (Threshold). The vocal outbursts were good. Bassist Christian Mendoza and guitarist Mirko Sangrigoli had the backing vocals. For guitarist Joop Wolters, it was a “home game”. During an instrumental piece, he walked to the front to show off his skills. Also ‘That’s Why We Came’ is from Threshold. Keyboardist Vivien Lalu provided the lovely, recognisable details of this song. He was at the back of the stage, but he was well-lit. So was the expressive Jelly Cardarelli. He played on an elaborate drum kit, with much cymbals. The sound of this came off a little less well on this night. Fans respectfully sang along in the softer played section.
And the Druids Turn to Stone
Damian is not only a good singer, but also an entertainer. Between songs, he joked, even about the ambulance about the night before. But he also apologised sincerely. The audience was very respectful, with little to no chatter to be heard. The men were well attuned to each other, which was evident in ‘Die With a Bullet’, for instance, the rests and twists were flawless. Damian sounded a little uncertain for a while. Afterwards, he said he made a mistake, of course with the jokes ala Damian. He recouped himself in the Lalu track ‘We Are Strong’, the minor played and sung ending was very good. He did not let go of that level again. Ayreon fans recognised the first notes of ‘And the Druids Turn to Stone’. Damian sang with intense experience. You could see that in his expression, and hear it in his voice. The intensity with which he sang the quiet parts was amazing. Again, the vocal outbursts were good. The applause was very well deserved. Damian’s own songs were interspersed with music by Landmarq, Arena, and Lalu, among others. The tempo and volume changes were well played and sung. The sound was not consistently balanced. During the quiet parts, the keys came into its own; in the rocking/metal parts, it faded into the background. The changes in lighting were less than in the music.
There was plenty of interaction between the band members. They regularly played alongside or opposite each other. It was obvious to see that they too were enjoying themselves. Christian sometimes produced mysterious sounds from his bass. At other times, he showed great bass grooves.
Hard to Keep Faith
There were some songs that made a deep impression, like the Arena song ‘Life Goes On’, Damian sang all solo for a moment, and it sounded perfect. That perfection was also there in ‘Into the Black Hole’. Especially here, Damian showed expression with his face and hands. Instrumentally, this complex Ayreon song was also played fantastically. The background vocals by Mirko and Christian completed it.
The set was very varied, not only in terms of styles. Also in terms of the “age” of the songs. ‘Is That a London Number’ comes from ‘The Fish Who Wanted To Be King’, Lalu’s new album. Damian’s own, ‘Hard to Keep Faith’ is only a few years old. Fans softly sang along to this compelling song. Before they started the last song, Damian made a few jokes. When Damian is around, there is always something to laugh about. Damian told that time was up for tonight. He said “I am chaotic, I am part of he chaos”. This was rewarded with cheers, as this Threshold song continues to be loved. You could almost feel the treble of bass strings. Even after 2.5 hours, Damian and the band still had plenty of energy. The doctor told Damian to take it easy, but there was no sign of that. The evening had flown by! His versatile 30-year career was beautifully wrapped up in a varied 2.5-hour set; played without a pause: respect!

Daarnaast heeft hij diverse keren op de planken gestaan met Ayreon. Het was even afwachten of de show van 3 november in De Bosuil in Weert wel door kon gaan. De show van een dag eerder moest worden gestaakt omdat Damian tijdens die show naar het ziekenhuis werd gebracht. Gelukkig kon de show doorgaan!
Ruim voordat de deuren open gingen stonden de eerste fans al te wachten. Damian maakte het wachten voor hun een stuk leuker: hij kwam een praatje maken, natuurlijk met grappen. Hij vertelde dat hij het wat rustig aan moest doen van de dokter. Maar wie Damian kent, weet dat hij dat niet kan.

Een paar minuutjes eerder dan gepland verschenen de bandleden op het podium. Damian als laatste, hij liep meteen naar de rand van het podium om ‘Sanity’s End’ (Threshold) te zingen. De vocale uithalen waren goed. Bassist Christian Mendoza en gitarist Mirko Sangrigoli hadden de achtergrondzang. Voor gitarist Joop Wolters was het een “thuiswedstrijd”. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk liep hij naar voren om zijn kunnen te laten horen. Ook ‘That’s Why We Came’ is van Threshold. Toetsenist Vivien Lalu zorgde voor de leuke, herkenbare details van dit nummer. Hij stond achteraan op het podium, maar hij werd goed in het licht gezet. Dat gold ook voor de expressieve Jelly Cardarelli. Hij speelde op een uitgebreide drumkit, met veel cimbalen. Het geluid hiervan kwam wat minder goed tot zijn recht op deze avond. Fans zongen met respect mee in het zachter gespeeld deel.

De mannen waren goed op elkaar ingespeeld, dat was bijvoorbeeld te zien in ‘Die With a Bullet’, de rusten en wendingen verliepen foutloos. Damian klonk even een beetje onzeker. Na afloop zei hij dat hij fout zat, natuurlijk met de grapjes ala Damian. Hij herpakte zich in het Lalu nummer ‘We Are Strong’, het klein gespeelde en gezongen einde was zeer goed. Dat niveau liet hij niet meer los. Ayreon fans herkende de eerste tonen van ’And the Druids Turn to Stone’. Damian zong met intense beleving. Dat zag je aan zijn expressie, en hoorde je aan zijn stem. De intensiteit waarmee hij de kleine delen zong was geweldig. De vocale uithalen waren weer goed. Het applaus was zeer terecht. Eigen nummers van Damian werden afgewisseld met muziek van onder andere Landmarq, Arena, en Lalu. De tempo-en volumewisselingen werden goed gespeeld en gezongen. Het geluid was niet constant in balans. Tijdens de rustige delen kwamen de toetsen goed tot zijn recht, in de rockende/metal stukken raakte het op de achtergrond. De veranderingen in het licht waren minder groot dan in de muziek.
Er was volop interactie tussen de bandleden onderling. Ze stonden regelmatig naast-of tegen over elkaar te spelen. Het was duidelijk te zien dat ook zij genoten. Christian haalde soms mysterieuze geluiden uit zijn bas. Op andere momenten liet hij gave bas grooves horen.
Hard to Keep Faith
Er waren een aantal nummers die veel indruk maakten, zoals het Arena nummer ’Life Goes On’, Damian zong even helemaal solo, en dat klonk perfect. Die perfectie was er ook in ‘Into the Black Hole’. Vooral hier toonde Damian expressie met zijn gezicht en handen. Ook instrumentaal werd dit complexe Ayreon nummer fantastisch gespeeld. De achtergrond zang van Mirko en Christian maakte het compleet.
De set was zeer gevarieerd, niet alleen qua stijlen. Ook qua “leeftijd” van de nummers. ‘Is That a London Number’ komt van ‘The Fish Who Wanted To Be King’, het nieuwe album van Lalu. Damian’s eigen, ‘Hard to Keep Faith’ is nog maar een paar jaar oud. Fans zongen zachtjes mee met dit meeslepende nummer. Voordat ze begonnen aan het laatste nummer, maakte Damian nog wat grapjes. Als Damian er is, valt er altijd wat te lachen. Damian vertelde dat de tijd er voor vanavond op zat. Hij zei “I am chaotic, I am part of he chaos”. Dat werd met gejuich beloond, want dit Threshold nummer blijft geliefd. Je voelde de snaren van de bas bijna trillen. Ook na 2,5 uur hadden Damian en de band nog volop energie. Damian moest het van de dokter rustig aan doen, maar daar was niks van te merken.De avond was voorbij gevlogen! Zijn veelzijdige 30 jarige carrière was mooi verpakt in een gevarieerde set van 2,5 uur; die zonder pauze werd gespeeld: respect!
