Guitarist Marcel Coenen has been working with prog rock greats such as John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Billy Sheehan (Mr Big) since the late 90s. He also occasionally collaborates on CDs and live performances by Ayreon. In 1999, he founded the prog metal band Sun Caged. Four years later, he released his debut album ‘Guitartalk’. This album has been given a metamorphosis, the new title is ‘Guitartalk 2021’. The release party of this new album was October 29 at De Bosuil, in Weert, a local venue for Marcel.
The concert had a modest start with ‘Anthem’. Marcel produced all kinds of special sounds from his strings. One knows how well he can play, and yet it remains impressive. ‘Independence Day’ followed non stop, unnoticed there had been a bassist change. Now Richard Ritterbeeks was on stage. Marcel played wireless, he used his pedalboard regularly. So he could not always leave his place. Even when he flew his fingers over the strings, it looked so easy. Rene Kroon’s keyboards were set up between two drum kits. So he didn’t have much space, yet he had a lively way of performing. In the uptempo parts, the barely you could hear the keys. Otherwise, the sound was well balanced, and especially the level of decibels was good.
Do Or Die
Before the start of ‘The Wet Season’ Marcel had a change of guitars. Drummer Pim Goverde counted down a bit too early, whereupon Marcel shouted, “Hooo, I’m not ready yet!” This was allowed on this night, it was Marcel’s party. Marcel’s subdued guitar playing was great, the front light was good, so you could see the emotion on his face. Freek Gielen’s guitar playing was also good. For the metal song ‘Do Or Die’ Ollie Oldenburg and Debby Thebrath came on stage, their voices formed a fine blend. The atmosphere on stage was enthusiastic, Pim “slashed away” and bass player Frank de Groot let himself go.
In the ballad ‘Inner Alchemy’ Marcel brought the emotion with compelling guitar play. Rene’s keyboard work also came into its own nicely. Occasionally Franck Faber took over the place of Rene. The songs are complex in structure, this certainly applies to ‘Station Araminta’. During the quickly played piece Marcel and guitarist David Maes stood next to each other. They both played the neck of their guitar with both hands at lightning speed. The turns to a modest played part and back again went perfectly.
Actually, Hans in T Zandt was supposed to join on drums this evening, but he had recently broken his hand. He was replaced by Ivo Rouschop. Although he only had a brief time to learn the songs, he played with nice dynamics.
Less is Moore
The beautifully played ‘Moyra’ was followed by ‘Endless’. The wordless vocals of Pascal Remans and Debby formed a good match. Again Marcel played sublime, subdued guitar. This was well complemented on acoustic guitar by Freek. After this piece of ear candy the tempo went up again for ‘Race Against Time’ and ‘Rebel’. Both the tightly played parts as well as the melodic pieces were played very well. ‘Less is Moore’ is a tribute to Gary Moore. His influences were clearly audible, but Marcel had given it his own twist. Hans couldn’t resist to play the drums, he played ‘More Than A Feeling’. During this cover of Boston, no less than three guitarists and three vocalists, including Andrew Elt, were on stage. Again, this was pure enjoyment, both for the band members and the audience.
A number of songs have a tight ending, these were, like the many tempo and volume changes, very well played. Pascal had the lead vocals in ‘Human Experiments’, with his high range voice, his voice easily rose above the metal. Moreover, his clear articulation made him quite easy to understand. The lights flashed along to the rousing tempo of the music. During the instrumental piece, Freek presented the guitar to Pascal, his guitar playing was short but powerful. Marcel continued to enjoy playing, and his party. After this song everyone left the stage. The fact that you could still hear some tones of guitar playing made the wait for the encore extra special. Marcel came back on stage first, ‘Big Bad Moon’ (by Joe Satriani) was played. Marcel sang himself this time, and it didn’t even sound shabby.
Fight For Your Right
After this, everyone who was waiting backstage returned to the stage, (except Frank). So the stage was pretty packed. There were two drummers, two keyboardists, three guitarists, and four vocalists, including Hans. But it was Pascal who was lead singer during ‘Fight For Your Right’. The chorus was sung along by all who were present. The atmosphere on stage was great, this was really a party. The more the word “Party” was repeated, the more frenzied the atmosphere became. So this evening ended with a fantastic climax. Marcel played non stop for more than two hours, respect! Of course he deservedly received a thunderous applause. This was a very cool release party. Because of the Covid there are rules regarding the closing time. So the time to stick around after the concert was unfortunately limited. If it had been possible, it would have continued into the night, because the atmosphere remained, even after the concert, very cozy.

Gitarist Marcel Coenen werkt al sinds eind jaren ’90 met grootheden uit de prog rock, zoals John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) en Billy Sheehan (Mr Big). Het concert had met ‘Anthem’ een bescheiden start. Marcel haalde allerlei bijzondere geluiden onder zijn snaren vandaan. Men weet hoe goed hij kan spelen, en toch blijft het indrukwekkend. Non stop ging het verder met ‘Independence Day’, ongemerkt was wel een bassisten wissel geweest. Nu stond Richard Ritterbeeks op het podium. Marcel speelde wireless, hij gebruikte zijn pedalboard regelmatig. Zodoende kon hij niet altijd van zijn plaats af. Zelfs als hij vliegensvlug met zijn vingers over de snaren ging, zag het er zo gemakkelijk uit. De keyboards van Rene Kroon stonden tussen twee drumkits opgesteld. Veel ruimte had hij dus niet, toch had hij een beweeglijke manier van performen. In de uptempo delen hoorde je iets te weinig toetsen. Verder was het geluid prima in balans, en vooral het aantal decibels was goed.
Do Or Die
Voor aanvang van ‘The Wet Season’ had Marcel een gitaarwissel. Drummer Pim Goverde telde iets te vroeg af, waarop Marcel riep: “Hooo, ik ben nog niet zo ver!” Dit mocht bij deze avond, het was Marcels feestje. Het ingetogen gitaarspel van Marcel was geweldig, het frontlicht was goed, zodat je de emotie op zijn gezicht kon zien. Ook het gitaarspel van Freek Gielen was goed. Voor het metal nummer ‘Do Or Die’ kwamen Ollie Oldenburg en Debby Thebrath op het podium, hun stemmen vormde een prima blend. De sfeer op het podium was uitgelaten, Pim hakte er flink op los en bassist Frank de Groot liet zich helemaal gaan.
In de ballad ‘Inner Alchemy’ bracht Marcel met meeslepend gitaarspel de emotie goed over. Ook het toetsenwerk van Rene kwam mooi tot zijn recht. Af en toe nam Franck Faber de plaats van Rene over. De nummers zijn complex van opbouw, dat geldt zeker voor ‘Station Araminta’. Tijdens het snel gespeelde stuk stonden Marcel en gitarist David Maes naast elkaar te spelen. Ze bespeelden allebei met beide handen razendsnel de hals van hun gitaar. De wendingen naar een klein gespeeld deel, en weer terug verliep perfect.
Eigenlijk zou Hans in T Zandt deze avond mee drummen, maar hij had kort geleden zijn hand gebroken. Hij werd vervangen door Ivo Rouschop. Hoewel hij maar korte tijd had om de nummers te leren, speelde hij met mooie dynamiek.
Less is Moore
Na het prachtig gespeelde ‘Moyra’ volgde ‘Endless’. De woordeloze zang van Pascal Remans en Debby vormde een goede match. Weer liet Marcel subliem ingetogen gitaarspel horen. Dit werd goed aangevuld op akoestisch gitaar door Freek. Na dit stukje earcandy ging het tempo er weer op voor ‘Race Against Time’ en ‘Rebel’. Zowel de strak gespeelde delen als de melodieuze stukken werden prima gespeeld. ‘Less is Moore’ is een tribute voor Gary Moore. Zijn invloeden waren duidelijk te horen, maar Marcel had er wel een eigen draai aan gegeven. Hans kon het niet laten om toch mee te spelen, hij drumde ‘More Than A Feeling’. Tijdens deze cover van Boston stonden er maar liefst drie gitaristen en drie vocalisten, inclusief Andrew Elt, op het podium. Ook dit was weer puur genieten, zowel voor de bandleden als voor het publiek.
Een aantal nummers hebben een strak einde, deze werden, net als de vele tempo en volume wisselingen, zeer goed gespeeld. Pascal had de leadzang in ‘Human Experiments’, hij kwam met zijn hoge bereik makkelijk boven de metal uit. Bovendien was hij door zijn duidelijke articulatie behoorlijk goed te verstaan. Het licht flitste mee op het opzwepende tempo van de muziek. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk hing Freek de gitaar om bij Pascal, zijn gitaarspel was kort maar krachtig. Marcel bleef genieten van het spelen, en van zijn feestje. Na dit nummer verliet iedereen het podium. Dat je toch enkele tonen gitaarspel hoorde, maakte het wachten op de toegift extra speciaal. Marcel kwam als eerste terug op het podium, ‘Big Bad Moon’ (van Joe Satriani) werd gespeeld. Marcel zong deze keer zelf, en dat klonk niet eens verkeerd.
Fight For Your Right
Hierna keerde iedereen die back stage zat (behalve Frank) terug naar de bühne. Het podium was dus goed vol. Er waren twee drummers, twee toetsenisten, drie gitaristen, en vier vocalisten, inclusief Hans. Maar het was Pascal die lead zanger was tijdens ‘Fight For Your Right’. Het refrein werd door alle aanwezigen meegezonden. De sfeer op het podium was geweldig, dit was echt een feest. Hoe vaker het woord “Party” herhaald werd, hoe uitzinniger de sfeer werd. Zo eindigde deze avond met een fantastische climax. Marcel heeft non stop meer dan twee uur gespeeld, respect! Natuurlijk kreeg hij dik verdiend, een daverend applaus. Dit was een hele gave release party. Door de Covid zijn er regels met betrekking tot de sluitingstijd. Dus de tijd om na het concert te blijven, was helaas beperkt. Als het gemogen had, was het zeker tot in de kleine uurtjes door gegaan, want de sfeer bleef, ook na het concert heel gezellig.
