Marcel Coenen – Guitartalk 2021

Guitarist Marcel Coenen is an essential figure in the prog metal circuit, among other things he is a guitarist with Metal Attack NL. He also plays with the Gary Moore Tribute Band. In 2003 his solo debut album ‘Guitartalk’ was released. The technical possibilities of recording have improved since then, so Marcel’s wish to re-release this album became bigger and bigger. With the contributions of guest musicians and vocalists, Guitartalk has had a complete metamorphosis. The release of ‘Guitartalk 2021’ is November 1st.

The metal is immediately present in ‘Independence Day’, the guitar work is delicious, and the bass is nice and cool. The drumming of Hans in ’t Zandt is good. Though the sound of the cymbals is a bit too thin. A pity because the cymbals Hans uses have a nice full round sound. There are plenty of turns, sometimes the music is slightly chaotic, at other times the (complex) rock metal is less hectic. This nice opening track has nice build up to the end.
In ‘Race Against Time’ the pace is quite high, but this is while maintaining dynamics. Of course the cool guitar play, in which Marcel shows a lot of variation, comes to the fore. Uptempo parts are interspersed with melodious guitar play. ‘Less is Moore’, with its atmospheric start, immediately has the beautiful feeling of a Gary Moore ballad. Despite his cool guitar playing, Marcel has given the other musicians plenty of room. You can hear Rene Kroon on his keyboard. In the part with more power, Hans plays dynamic drums. Everything is complemented perfectly by Frank de Groot on bass. Again there is a great build up to the end.

In every song there is enough variation, but also the songs differ enough from each other. The Eastern influences make ‘Endless’ very different from the previous tracks. The wordless vocals of Micky Huismans fit in perfectly. The bass grooves are clearly present. The balance between all instruments remains. The diversity is also there in the songs that follow. In ‘Fusion’ you can hear sparkling piano sounds, and the more electronic aspect of the keys. This is both interspersed and mixed with the metal rock. The twists and turns keep coming, the most unexpected perhaps being those in ‘Station Araminta.’ Jazz influences are interwoven between the music a few times. Especially at the end the organ sounds come forward nicely. After the beautiful, compelling ‘Mayra’ follows ‘Human Experiments’. The powerful and the high pitched voice of Pascal Remans suits the metal. Again there are plenty of changes in tempo and volume.

In the beautiful, somewhat calmer ‘Inner Alchemy’, the softer played parts on the cymbals have a beautiful sound. The distribution of the music over the headphones is fine, which can be heard in ‘Do Or Die’. Ollie Oldenburgh sings this metal song, also his voice fits well with the whole. Some parts are played super fast, but the melody is preserved. The high tempo of ‘BиpTyo3’ is very uplifting, besides that there are some nice rests incorporated. This last song ends spherical.

‘Guitartalk 2021’ is clearly an album by a guitarist, Marcel draws a lot of attention to himself with his incredible guitar playing. Still, the other musicians generally get enough space. It is far from ‘only’ heavy metal, there are plenty of changes in tempo and volume, and styles. The whole thing is complex, so it will take some time before you really get to know this album. Although some of the songs stick in your head after a few listens, so the balance between accessibility and complexity is also good.

Marcel Coenen – Guitartalk 2021
