The guitarist Xavier Boscher plays a mix of prog metal and New Age. Since 1995 this Frenchman has released many albums. ‘Waterscapes‘ is his brand-new album. He has played and produced everything himself. Also, the artwork is made by Xavier. The album opens differently than usual: ‘Cataract‘ starts with a fade in. This is an inverted, fade out. So, at first the music is soft, then the volume increases rapidly as if you turned up the volume. The music is mainly between rock and metal. Between the metal parts there are electronic sounds. The whole is well distributed over the headphones. The sound of cymbals is too tinny, that distracts the attention from the rest of the music. The other percussion of this exhilarating track does sound good.

‘Nectar Ocean’s Depths‘ has a very different atmosphere, because the laid-back part goes in the direction of jazz. At other times the music has an electronic sound. The twists and turns in between are fine. Of course, the plenty of guitar playing remains. The end is rather abrupt. ‘Atlantis‘ seems to become a rather quiet track, but soon the quiet style is “riddled” with short, rocking fragments. After that, tempo and volume stay a bit higher for a while. The unexpected quiet piece that is inserted takes only a few seconds. The next piece takes a bit longer. So, there are always surprises, and with gusts there are quite a few layers in the music. You can hear that in the songs that follow. There too you notice that certain sound structures are repeated. This is often applied New Age, but Xavier also applies this within the metal parts. Because of this, parts seem to be somewhat predictable. Yet you hear new things all the time. Because there are quite a lot of twists and details in the music. And then the cool guitar playing also stands out in a positive way.

As expected, there are also lovely quiet songs, like ‘Hydrotherapy‘. At a certain moment the music is ‘whisper softly’ for a moment. This relaxing atmosphere continues in ‘Abyssal‘, in which the guitar playing is dreamy and compelling. The monotonous percussion fits the flow of this song. But because it is a bit too loud, the guitar playing and the details get a bit too little attention. The title track is the last song. It starts, just like ‘Cataract‘, with a fade in. Slowly it builds up a suitable loudness for the rock/metal. A soft piece is lovely in sound and almost has an oriental atmosphere. A number of changes follow, some of which are a bit predictable. ‘Watershed‘ ends suddenly. This album has a nice balance between New Age and metal. New Age is sometimes ‘other-worldly’ and long-winded. But the songs on ‘Waterscapes‘ are not really long. The metal parts have a nice melody. The ‘drumming’ is sometimes quite monotonous, partly these repetitions belong within the whole. On other moments there would certainly have been room for more dynamics. There are plenty of details and twists and turns, a single change is a bit odd. The small parts played are nice and fragile, but not so intense that they get under your skin. There are regularly a lot of layers, these are well distributed over the headphones. The guitar playing is well varied, sometimes tenderly, sometimes wonderfully screaming or compelling. So, the productive Xavier Boscher has again released a good album.

Xavier Boscher – Waterscapes

De gitarist Xavier Boscher speelt een mix van prog metal en New Age. Sinds 1995 heeft deze Fransman al heel wat albums uitgebracht. ‘Waterscapes’ is zijn spiksplinternieuw album. Hij heeft alles zelf gespeeld en geproduceerd. Ook het artwork komt van zijn hand. Het album opent anders dan anders: ‘Cataract’ start met een fade in. Dit is een omgekeerde, fade out. Dus is de muziek in eerste instantie zacht, dan neemt het snel volume toe alsof er aan de volumeknop gedraaid wordt. De muziek zit hoofdzakelijk tussen rock en metal in. Tussen de metal delen klinken er elektronische geluidjes. Het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Het geluid van cimbalen is te blikkerig, dat leidt de aandacht af van de rest van de muziek. De overige percussie van deze opzwepende track klinkt wel goed.

‘Nectar Ocean’s Depths’ is heel anders van sfeer, want het laid back deel gaat richting jazz. Op andere momenten heeft de muziek een elektronische klank. De wendingen hiertussen verlopen prima. Natuurlijk is en blijft er volop gitaarspel te horen. Het einde is nogal abrupt.
‘Atlantis’ lijkt een vrij rustige track te worden, maar al snel wordt de rustige stijl “doorzeefd” met korte, rockende fragmenten. Daarna blijven tempo en volume een tijdje wat hoger. Het onverwachte rustige stukje wat ingelast is duurt slecht enkele seconden. Een volgend stukje duurt wat langer. Zo zijn er steeds verrassingen, en met vlagen zijn er best veel laagjes in de muziek. Dat hoor je in de nummers die volgen. Ook daar merk je dat bepaalde klankstructuren worden herhaald. Dit wordt vaak toegepast New Age, maar Xavier past dit ook binnen de metal delen toe. Hierdoor lijken delen wat voorspelbaar te zijn. Maar toch hoor je steeds nieuwe dingen. Want er zijn best veel wendingen en details in de muziek. En dan springt het gave gitaarspel er ook nog positief uit.

Zoals verwacht is er ook zijn er heerlijke rustige nummers, zoals ‘Hydrotherapy’. Op een gegeven moment is de muziek heel even ‘fluisterzacht’. Deze ontspannende sfeer gaat verder in ‘Abyssal’, waarin het gitaarspel dromerig en meeslepend is. De monotone percussie past bij de flow van dit nummer. Maar doordat het iets te luid is, krijgen het gitaarspel en de details wat te weinig aandacht.
De titel track is het laatste nummer. Deze begint, net als ‘Cataract’, met een fade in. Langzaam wordt het opgebouwd een passend volume voor de rock/metal. Een zacht stukje is liefelijk van klank en heeft bijna een Oosterse sfeer. Er volgen nog een aantal veranderingen, waarvan sommige een beetje voorspelbaar. ‘Watershed’ eindigt plotseling.

Dit album heeft een mooie balans tussen New Age en metal. New Age is soms ‘zweverig’ en langdradig. Maar de nummers op ‘Waterscapes’ zijn niet echt lang. De metal delen hebben een mooie melodie. Het ‘drumwerk’ is soms vrij monotoon, deels horen deze herhalingen binnen het geheel. Op andere momenten was er zeker ruimte geweest voor meer dynamiek. Er zijn volop details en wendingen, een enkele verandering verloopt een beetje merkwaardig. De klein gespeelde delen zijn mooi fragiel, maar niet zo intens dat ze onder je huid kruipen. Er zijn regelmatig heel wat laagjes, deze zijn goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Het gitaarspel is goed gevarieerd, soms teder, dan weer heerlijk gillend of meeslepend. De productieve Xavier Boscher heeft dus weer een goed album uitgebracht.
