Derk Akkerman richtte in begin jaren ’80 de prog band Saris op. Deze Duitse band was live erg actief, maar bracht maar één album uit, dat was in 1993.
Na een break van 13 jaar kwam Derk terug met een compleet nieuwe line up.
Nu is hun vijfde album ‘Beyond the Rainbow’, uit. Saris neemt je mee op hun reis door het leven. Ze gebruiken onder andere invloeden van AOR (‘Adult Orientated Rock) en symfonische elementen.

De eerste paar seconden van ‘Avalon’ zijn vrij rustig maar binnen 10 seconden rockt Saris er lekker op los. Samen met het pakkende ritme zorgt het voor een boeiende opening.
De zang van Henrik Wager en Anja Günther sluit prima aan bij de muziek en ook de gestapelde stemmen samen vormen een prima blend. De verhouding tussen toetsen en (bas)gitaar is goed. De melodie blijft door de licht poppy structuur aangenaam in je hoofd kleven. Deze openingstrack eindigt plotseling maar mooi.

In ‘Time Machine’ vloeien de veranderingen mooi in elkaar over, hiermee ontstaat er een wisselwerking tussen heerlijke rock, en rock met een poppy vleugje. Bovendien zitten er zo nu en dan lichte klassieke invloeden in. Er is niet alleen een verandering in stijlen, maar ook in instrumenten. Dit is verpakt in een prima toegankelijk geheel.

‘Beyond the rainbow’ start met hoge, woordeloze zang. Dit wordt gecombineerd met sferische muziek, die overgaat naar een klassieke sfeer. De veranderingen tussen de diverse klanken van de verschillende instrumenten lopen prachtig in elkaar over. De symfonische elementen worden zeer goed verweven in het geheel. Alles zit complex in elkaar, maar luistert verrassend makkelijk weg. Wat verderop zijn er enkele onverwachte wendingen, die niet allemaal soepel verlopen. Dit is de enige epic track, en een terechte titeltrack.

Na het veelbelovende intro van ‘Orphan’ zijn er ook wat minpuntjes. Een enkele wending verloopt wat rommelig en de achtergrondzang is op voorspelbare momenten ingezet. Even verslapt mijn aandacht, maar het geluid van klassieke instrumenten haalt me weer terug. Toch blijft het vocaal is het her en der clichématig.

‘Away From You’ straalt kracht en positiviteit uit. Hoewel er voorspelbare stukjes inzitten, is de structuur van dit opzwepende nummer solide.

Ook ‘Infinity’ heeft een positieve vibe in de muziek. De woorden zijn krachtig en vol overtuiging gezongen. Het straalt vertrouwen in de toekomst uit. De volgorde van de nummers, en de tekst die erbij hoort is prima gekozen. Bij dit laatste nummer zijn we bij het einde van de regenboog. De koorzang draagt bij aan de mooie structuur. De vocale uithaal op het einde is zeer goed.

Af en toe is de achtergrondzang iets aan de zoete kant, maar daarbuiten is het een waardevolle aanvulling. Als de stemmen worden ingezet al instrument vormt het altijd een prima toevoeging. Vocale delen worden goed afgewisseld met heerlijke lange instrumentale stukken.
De orkestrale arrangementen vormen een mooie melange met de overige muziek. Er is een geraffineerde afwisseling tussen de verschillende stijlen en de muziekinstrumenten.
Er is een prima balans tussen ritme en melodie. De toegankelijke structuur zorgt ervoor dat er verschillende melodieën zich in je hoofd gaan nestelen.

Saris – Beyond the rainbow

Derk Akkerman founded the prog band Saris in the early 80’s. This German band was very active live, but released only one album, that was in 1993.
After a break of 13 years Derk came back with a completely new line up.
Now their fifth album ‘Beyond the Rainbow‘ is out. Saris takes you on their journey through life. They use for instance influences of AOR (‘Adult Orientated Rock’) and symphonic elements.

The first few seconds of ‘Avalon‘ are pretty quiet but within 10 seconds Saris rocks. Together with the catchy rhythm it creates a captivating opening.
The vocals of Henrik Wager and Anja Günther match the music perfectly and the stacked voices forms a fine blend together. The ratio between keyboards and (bass)guitar is good. The melody sticks pleasantly in your head pleasantly, Because of the slightly poppy structure, the melody sticks in your head pleasantly. This opening track ends suddenly but nicely.

In ‘Time Machine‘ the changes flow nicely into each other, this creates an interaction between delicious rock and rock with a poppy touch. On top of that, every now and then there are light classical influences in it. There is not only a change in styles, but also in instruments. This is wrapped up in an easily accessible whole.

‘Beyond the rainbow‘ starts with high, wordless vocals. This is combined with spherical music, which switches to a classical atmosphere. The changes between the various sounds of the different instruments flow beautifully into each other. The symphonic elements are very well interwoven in the whole. Everything is complex, but is surprisingly easy to listen to. A bit further on there are some unexpected twists and turns, not all of them flow smoothly. This is the only epic track, and a justified title track.

After the promising intro of ‘Orphan‘ there are some flaws too. A single twist runs a bit messy and the backing vocals are set on predictable moments. For a moment my attention slackens, but the sound of classical instruments brings me back. Still, the vocals remain clichéd here and there.

‘Away From You‘ expresses power and positivity. Although there are predictable pieces in it, the structure of this exhilarating song is solid.

Also ‘Infinity‘ has a positive vibe in the music. The words are sung with power and conviction. It radiates confidence in the future. The order of the songs, and the lyrics that go with it, are well chosen. In this last song we are at the end of the rainbow. The choral singing supports the beautiful structure. The power vocals at the end are very good.

Occasionally the background vocals are a bit too ‘sugary’, but apart from that it is a valuable addition. When the voices are used as an instrument it is always an excellent addition. Vocal parts are well alternated with lovely long instrumental pieces.
The orchestral arrangements form a nice blend with the other music. There is a refined alternation between the different styles and the musical instruments.
There is a fine balance between rhythm and melody. The accessible structure causes that several melodies will be stuck in your head.
