Zanger, componist en multi-instrumentalist Arne Schäfer is medeoprichter van de Duitse prog band Versus X. Deze band ligt allang stil, maar dat geldt niet voor Arne. Midden jaren ’90 richtte hij het prog project Apogee op, en bracht diverse albums uit. ‘Endurance of the Obsolete’ is het derde album dat hij uitbrengt bij het label ‘Progressieve Promotion Records’. Dit keer zul je invloeden van ‘Gentle Giant’ terug horen, zoals a capella zang.

‘Interpretations’ heeft een heldere, akoestische start. Even later krijgt de muziek meer power. Het geluid is mooi verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Arne zingt flinke hoeveelheid tekst en sommige delen zijn best snel gezongen. Dit is geen sing a long nummer, maar dat is ook niet de opzet. Het uitgebreide instrumentale stuk is heerlijk. Arne zingt even solo, daarna is er a capella zang. Alles is door Arne gezongen, knap gedaan! De symfonische elementen zijn soms op subtiele manier verweven met het geheel. Het gitaarspel van Arne is super. En dan te bedenken dat hij niet alleen zingt en gitaar speelt, maar ook de bas alle keyboards zijn door Arne bespeeld. Zelfs de orkestrale arrangementen zijn door hem verzorgd. Last but not least: Het drumwerk van Eberhard Graef sluit prefect aan bij de muziek en maakt het geheel compleet.

Arne zingt klein in ‘Waiting for the Dawn’. Zijn markante stem is net niet breekbaar genoeg om intens te raken. De emotie wordt overgebracht door meerdere laagjes akoestisch gitaarspel. Deze tweede track is klein opgezet en heeft enkele subtiele veranderingen in zang en muziek.

De titeltrack heeft een pakkende start, maar de complexiteit komt terug. De wendingen blijven elkaar opvolgen. Bovendien bevat de muziek allerlei details, bijvoorbeeld het geluid van ‘barchimes’. Weer is de achtergrondzang mooi toegevoegd, nogmaals alles is door Arne gezongen. Instrumentale en vocale delen wisselen elkaar op mooie manier af. De muziek is divers en varieert van akoestisch tot aan heerlijke rock, inclusief licht gillend gitaarspel. Bovendien zijn er symfonische delen. Soms zijn deze wat meer op de achtergrond, op andere momenten zijn de klassieke elementen duidelijker aanwezig. Deze gave epic heeft een goede opbouw naar het einde toe.

Tot slot ‘Overruled’ dit is de derde epic. Hier vloeien de veranderingen in elkaar over. Het prachtige gitaarspel blijft een ‘ear-catcher’. Soms is dit op de voorgrond, op andere momenten zijn de toetsen op de voorgrond te horen. Met vlagen is de zang gestapeld. Het laatste stuk is klein gezongen en gespeeld.

Het geluid is een fractie te flets, waardoor sommige contrasten in de muziek minder goed tot bloei komen. Er zijn verschillen met ‘Conspiracy of Fools’ hun vorige album. De achtergrondzang is minder zoet, dat vinden sommigen misschien aangenamer. Er zijn ook overeenkomsten, zoals de complexiteit en de vele details in de muziek. Bovendien is het functioneren van de mens in de huidige maatschappij een terugkerend thema.
Arne is niet constant helemaal te verstaan, maar je kunt zijn woorden meelezen in het tekstboekje. Om Apogee te kunnen waarderen moet je wel een liefhebber zijn van de soms wat markante stem van Arne. Maar als je van zijn stem houdt, dan is ‘Endurance of the Obsolete’ zeker een aanrader.

Apogee – Endurance of the Obsolete

Singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Arne Schäfer is co-founder of the German prog band Versus X. This band has been at a standstill for a long time, but that doesn’t apply to Arne. In the mid 90’s he founded the prog project Apogee, and released several albums. Endurance of the Obsolete‘ is the third album he releases at the label ‘Progressive Promotion Records‘. This time you will hear influences of ‘Gentle Giant’ again, like a cappella vocals.

‘Interpretations‘ has a clear, acoustic start. Moments later the music gets more powerful. The sound is nicely distributed over the headphones. Arne sings a lot of lines and some parts are sung pretty fast. This is not a sing a long song, but that’s not the intention either. The extensive instrumental piece is delicious. Arne sings solo for a moment, after that there is a cappella vocals. Everything is sung by Arne, well done! The symphonic elements are sometimes subtly interwoven with the whole. Arne’s guitar playing is super. And to think that he doesn’t only sing and play the guitar, but also the bass and all the keyboards have been played by Arne. Even the orchestral arrangements are arranged by him. Last but not least: Eberhard Graef’s drumming fits perfectly with the music and makes it complete.

Arne sings softly on ‘Waiting for the Dawn‘. His remarkable voice is just not fragile enough to touch intense. The emotion is conveyed by several layers of acoustic guitar playing. This second track sound ‘gentle’ and has some subtle changes in vocals and music.

The title track has a catchy start, but the complexity comes back. The twists and turns keep following each other. Moreover, the music contains all kinds of details, for example the sound of ‘bar chimes’. Again, the background vocals are nicely added, once again everything is sung by Arne. Instrumental and vocal parts alternate beautifully. The music is diverse and varies from acoustic to delicious rock, including slightly screaming guitar playing. There are also symphonic parts. Sometimes these are more in the background, at other times the classical elements are more clearly present. This cool epic has a good build-up towards the end.

Finally, ‘Overruled‘ this is the third epic. Here the changes flow into each other. The beautiful guitar playing remains an ‘ear-catcher’. Sometimes this is in the foreground, on other moments the keys can be heard in the foreground. With gusts the vocals are stacked. The last piece has been sung and played soft.
Even the orchestral arrangements are arranged by him. Last but not least: Eberhard Graef’s drumming fits perfectly with the music and makes it complete.

The sound is a fraction too pale, causing some contrasts in the music develop less not enough. There are differences with ‘Conspiracy of Fools‘ their previous album. The background vocals are less ‘sugary’, some may find that more pleasant. There are similarities as well, like the complexity and the many details in the music. Moreover, the functioning of human beings in today’s society is a recurring theme.
Arne is not always fully understandable, but you can read his words in the lyric booklet. In order to appreciate Apogee, you have to be a lover of Arne’s sometimes remarkably voice. But if you like his voice, then ‘Endurance of the Obsolete‘ is definitely recommended.
