Multi-instrumentalist Ruud Dielen is the man behind studio project Glorious Wolf. The previous prog album, 2019’s ‘Zodiac’, received good reviews. The influences of 1970s symphonic and psychedelic rock, among others, can also be heard on his new album ‘Mysterious Traveler’. The album was self-released, but the promotion was done by ‘Bad Dog Promotions’.
This largely instrumental album opens with the vocal track ‘Repentance’. The intro is catchy. Not only the good guitar playing, but also the dynamic drumming stands out positively. Quite unexpectedly, “Help, help” sounds a few times. This runs back and forth nicely in the headphones. Both the combination of keys with (bass) guitar, and the turns are special. The vocals sound a bit distorted, the words not very cheerful. For the world is in repentance and it all seems to be going wrong. Although all is not depressing, this track needs some time to grow. The same goes for the instrumental ‘Slow Down’. The minimalist piece gets under my skin. The slow music is sometimes experimental and contains alternative sounds and details. The recurring music of the beginning provides unity.
After the subdued intro of ‘The True Story’, there are some gradual turns, the music remains quite calm. Perhaps not everyone will immediately appreciate Celia van Onna’s particular voice. The way the (stacked) vocals come together with the music is quite idiosyncratic. There are more details and/or layers in the music than you initially hear. At one point, light screaming guitar playing comes through the rather quiet music. Despite these contradictions, everything remains balanced. The ending is quite unexpected. Very briefly at the start of ‘Howling At The Moon’, you hear the sound of a howling wolf. Because of the repetitions in parts of the music, your attention may slip away. Just before the end, the transition to the sound of the howling wolf is a bit strange. The howling could have sounded more intense, and lasted longer. Now it hardly adds any value.
The title track starts mysteriously, and has the atmosphere of a fictional or mysterious landscape. Despite the subdued music, there are several details. You can hear the differences in pitch of the percussion. The special blend between instruments remains. Step by step, the music becomes softer and slower. Just before the end, there are some (sampled) sounds. In ‘Battlefield’, metal influences and high-pitched sounds of keyboard instruments alternate, sometimes unexpectedly. The same goes for hectic versus quieter pieces. There is no sampling of, say, sword fights, cannon blasts. This allows the listener to decide for themselves if and what time image they think of. The unexpected ending is nicely chosen. ‘Beautifully Broken (parts 1 & 2)’ has an atmospheric start. Celia’s lower vocals come out nicely. Vocals and music keep the same, calm flow for a while. After a rest, the sequel is very different. The music is a lot slower. Playful guitar playing blends visibly with lingering sounds from the keys. Guitar playing that gets more and more intense forms the build-up to the end.
The more you listen, the more details you hear. Although some fall away a bit because there are quite a lot of repetitions. There is a great contrast in volume. If you listen with headphones/earphones, it might take some time to find the right volume. But reasonably loud through speakers is also possible, as the sound is of good quality. Those who know the previous albums will definitely hear Glorious Wolf’s style.

Glorious Wolf – Mysterious Traveler
Multi-instrumentalist Ruud Dielen is de man achter het studio project Glorious Wolf. Het vorige prog album, ’Zodiac’ uit 2019, kreeg goede recensies. De invloeden van onder andere symfonische en psychedelische rock uit de jaren ’70 zijn ook op zijn nieuwe cd ‘Mysterious Traveler’ te horen. Het album is in eigen beheer uitgebracht, maar de promotie is door ‘Bad Dog Promotions’ gedaan.
Dit grotendeels instrumentale album opent met de vocale track ’Repentance’. Het intro is pakkend. Niet alleen het goede gitaarspel, maar ook het dynamische drumwerk valt positief op. Vrij onverwacht klinkt er een paar keer: “Help, help”. Dit loopt mooi heen en weer in de koptelefoon. Zowel de combinatie van toetsen met (bas)gitaar, als de wendingen zijn bijzonder. De zang klinkt wat vervormd, de woorden zijn niet heel vrolijk. Want de wereld is in berouw en het lijkt allemaal verkeerd te gaan. Hoewel het geheel niet deprimerend is, moet deze track wel even groeien. Dat geldt voor het instrumentale ‘Slow Down’. Het minimalistische stukje kruipt onder mijn huid. De langzame muziek is soms experimenteel en bevat alternatieve klanken en details. De terugkerende muziek van het begin zorgt voor eenheid.
Na het ingetogen intro van ‘The True Story’ zijn er een aantal geleidelijke wendingen, de muziek blijft vrij kalm. Misschien dat niet iedereen het eigen stemgeluid van Celia van Onna meteen zal waarderen. De manier waarop de (gestapelde) zang samen komt met de muziek is best eigenzinnig. Er zitten meer details en/of laagjes in de muziek dan dat je in eerste instantie hoort. Op een gegeven moment komt er licht gillend gitaarspel door de vrij rustige muziek heen. Ondanks deze tegenstellingen blijft het geheel in balans. Het einde is vrij onverwacht. Heel even hoor je aan de start van ‘Howling At The Moon’ het geluid van een huilende wolf. Door de herhalingen in delen van de muziek, kan je aandacht verslappen. Vlak voor het einde is de overgang naar het geluid van de huilende wolf wat vreemd. Het gehuil had intenser mogen klinken, en langer mogen duren. Nu heeft het nauwelijks toegevoegde waarde.
De titeltrack start geheimzinnig, en heeft de sfeer van een fictief of mysterieus landschap. Ondanks de ingetogen muziek zijn er diverse details. Je hoort de verschillen in toonhoogte van de percussie. De bijzondere melange tussen instrumenten blijft. Stapje voor stapje wordt de muziek zachter en langzamer. Vlak voor het einde zijn er enkele (gesampelde) geluiden. In ‘Battlefield’ wisselen metal invloeden en hoge klanken van toetsinstrumenten elkaar soms onverwacht af. Datzelfde geldt voor hectische versus rustigere stukken. Er is geen sampling van bijvoorbeeld zwaardgevechten, kanonslagen. Hierdoor kan de luisteraar zelf bepalen of en welk tijdsbeeld hij/zij erbij bedenkt. Het onverwachte eind is mooi gekozen. ’Beautifully Broken (part 1 & 2)’ heeft een sferische start. De lagere zang van Celia komt mooi uit. Zang en muziek houden een tijd dezelfde, kalme flow. Na een rust is is het vervolg heel anders. De muziek is een stuk langzamer. Meespelend gitaarspel mengt zicht met lang aanhoudende klanken van de toetsen. Gitaarspel dat steeds intenser wordt vormt de opbouw naar het einde.
Hoe vaker je luistert, hoe meer details je hoort. Al vallen enkele wat weg doordat er vrij veel herhalingen zijn. Er is een groot contrast in volume. Als je met koptelefoon/oortjes luistert, is het misschien even zoeken naar het juiste volume. Maar redelijk luid door speakers kan ook, want het geluid is goed van kwaliteit. Wie de voorgaande albums kent, hoort zeker de stijl van Glorious Wolf terug.
