Multi-instrumentalist/singer Edward Reekers became well-known to the broader public through Kayak. But even before leaving this prog band, he was musically active in various fields. He was asked by Syb van der Ploeg to join ‘Motel Westcoast.’ This theatre production managed to be successful for several years. Moreover, Edward toured the Netherlands with Symfo Classics – The Best of Symphonic Rock. And last but not least, he has also been on stage with Ayreon several times. About four years ago, he founded the band ProgProms. The permanent band consists of members of, among others:
Kayak, Knight Area and Stream Of Passion. Singer Damian Wilson is one of the special guests for this tour. The first show was 27 December at De Bosuil in Weert, The Netherlands. Well before the doors opened, there was a fairly long queue waiting at the door.
Firth of Fifth
The musicians came on for the instrumental piece of ‘Careful where you step’ (by Saga). Edward had the vocals here and played tambourine. After a word of welcome from Edward, he announced ‘Firth of Fifth’. The visitors naturally recognised the intro on the keys, played by Jeffrey Revet.
Multi-instrumentalist Hubert Heeringa played the flute here, among other things. Guitarist Mark Bogert was at one with the music, showcasing beautifully compelling guitar playing.
There was non-verbal communication between the musicians as well as between bassist Charles Nagtzaam and Mark. For a moment, the sound of one of the keyboard instruments was distorted. This reappeared later in a few more songs, although somewhat less clearly. Judith Rijnveld is frontwoman of Kingfisher Sky. She sang Kate Bush’s ‘The Man With the Child in His Eyes’ in her own way.
The Liberty Project
The lead vocals were interspersed in a very casual way. There was no competition to be felt, but familiarity. There were sensitive, gentle songs like ‘Last one Home’, in which Edwards’ voice stood out beautifully. Magoria’s drummer Harmen Kieboom played suitably softly. The audience listened attentively, Mark’s solo was rewarded with applause.
‘The Liberty Project’ is Edward’s new project. He launched the debut album in August. From this, he sang ‘Liberty’. He started with his eyes closed and sang very sensitively. Then he walked up to each band member, and put an arm around him/her. Or put a hand on his/her shoulder. This matched the lyrics beautifully.
Hubert not only plays various wind instruments, but also the violin. He picked that up for ‘Dust In The Wind’. ‘Don’t Give Up’ was the last song before the break. This was a duet with Edward and Nadine Bogert-Pruim, it was she who sang the power outbursts.
A Song For You
During the break, the crew changed the wiring of a keyboard. You could hear the improvement immediately in the instrumental intro of ‘Behind the Lines’. Edward has a calm way of performing. His voice suited everything he sang, for example ‘A Song For You’. This was one of the songs in which Hubert played various flutes.
It was a beautiful listening concert, with few “sing-alongs”. Moreover, the songs like ‘Love of Life’ by Earth and Fire, were vocally too difficult. Because no one from the audience could achieve the level of Nadine’s power outbursts.
Supertramp
‘The Book Of Love’ started subdued with keyboard and violin. The audience listened captivated to this duet between Edward and Judith. Each vocalist sang the songs that suited her/him. That’s why Damian had the lead vocals in ‘Take The Long Way Home’. Damian has a different, more energetic way of performing than Edward, but that didn’t disturb at all. Their performance suited the songs the men were singing. Damian once fronted the band Landmarq, from which he sang ‘Forever Young’. Fans clapped along to the rhythm of the music. During an instrumental piece, Damian gave his microphone to someone in the audience and left the stage. Mark’s amazing solo was a “goose-bump moment” for many. Damian had meanwhile entered the hall, standing close to the stage and calmly clapping along to the beat. When Mark noticed this, a big smile appeared on his face. After beautiful slow ly bass notes, Damian started singing from the hall again. His contribution livened up the show. Therefore, the surprising choice of ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ by The Buggles could be right behind it.
Good Citizens
The final song was ‘Good Citizens’ also by ‘The Liberty Project’.
There was extensive clapping for an encore. Edward explained that the encore songs had become a tradition. So they started with ‘Old And Wise’.
Again, the backing vocals were balanced with the lead vocals and the music. Hubert played his saxophone with passion. This earned extra applause. Everything was sung and played with love and respect for the music. This could also be heard and felt in ‘The Spirit Carries On’. After this last song, the musicians were obviously touched by the extended applause. Many visitors, holding drinks, enjoyed the cosy, warm atmosphere at De Bosuil for a little while longer.
ProgProms startte hun tour sterk in De Bosuil

Hubert speelt niet alleen diverse blaasinstrumenten, maar ook viool. Die pakte hij erbij voor ‘Dust In The Wind’. ‘Don’t give up’ was het laatste nummer voor de pauze. Dit was een duet met Edward en Nadine Bogert-Pruim, zij was het die de power uithalen zong.
A Song For You
Tijdens de pauze veranderde de crew de bekabeling van een keyboard. De verbetering hoorde je meteen in het instrumentale intro van ‘Behind the Lines’. Edward heeft een rustige manier van performen. Zijn stem paste bij alles wat hij zong, bijvoorbeeld ‘A Song For You’. Dit was één van de nummers waarin Hubert verschillende fluiten bespeelde.
Het was een mooi luisterconcert, met weinig “mee-zingers”. Bovendien waren de nummers zoals ‘Love of Life’ van Earth and Fire, zang technisch te moeilijk. Want niemand uit het publiek zou het niveau van de power uithalen van Nadine kunnen halen.

Daarom had Damian de leadzang in ‘Take The Long Way Home’. Damian heeft een andere, energiekere manier van performen dan Edward, maar dat stoorde totaal niet. Hun performance paste bij de nummers die de mannen zongen. Damian was ooit frontman van de band Landmarq, van deze band zong hij ’Forever Young’. Fans klapte mee in de maat van de muziek. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk gaf Damian zijn microfoon aan iemand uit het publiek en verliet het podium. De geweldige solo van Mark was voor vele een “kippenvel-moment”. Damian was ondertussen de zaal in gelopen, hij stond vlak bij het podium en klapte rustig mee in de maat. Toen Mark dat in de gaten kreeg verscheen er een brede lach op zijn gezicht. Na gave langzame bastonen, begon Damian vanuit de zaal weer te zingen. Zijn bijdrage maakte de show levendiger. Daarom kon de verrassende keuze van ’Video Killed The Radio Star’ van The Buggles hier wel achteraan.
Good Citizens
Als laatste nummer werd ‘Good Citizens’ ook van ‘The Liberty Project’ gespeeld.
Er werd uitgebreid geklapt om een toegift. Edward vertelde dat de nummers van de toegift een traditie geworden zijn. Dus werd er gestart met ‘Old And Wise’.
Weer was de achtergrondzang in balans met de leadzang en de muziek. Hubert bespeelde zijn saxofoon met bezieling. Dit leverde een extra applaus op. Alles werd gezongen en gespeeld met liefde en respect voor de muziek. Dat was ook te horen en te voelen in ‘The Spirit Carries On’. Na dit laatste nummer waren de muzikanten zichtbaar ontroerd door het lange applaus. Veel bezoekers genoten met een drankje in de hand nog een tijdje na van de gezellige, warme sfeer in De Bosuil.
