Het Duitse prog project Force of Progress bestaat uit vier ervaren muzikanten die bijna allemaal keyboards en synthesizers bespelen. Er is niet alleen veel ‘toetsenwerk’ te horen, ook bas en gitaar komen volop aan bod, want er zijn diverse multi-instrumentalisten in de band.
‘A secret place’ is hun tweede album. Ze omschrijven hun album ongeveer als volgt: ”het is volle kracht vooruit in deze instrumentale roller coaster”
‘The Hand Sculpted Heart’ start inderdaad met redelijk wat power. Er is een mix van rock en elektronische klanken. De muziek buitelt als het ware over en door elkaar heen. Tussen dit alles is er pianospel verwerkt, even later is dit bijna solo. Het tempo ligt met vlagen hoog en de metal is hier duidelijk aanwezig. Dit openingsnummer eindigt met enkele pianoklanken.
De start van ‘The Perfect Element’ is aangenaam heavy. Ineens is er een wending naar rustig deel en het geluid loopt leuk heen en weer in de koptelefoon.
De veelal plotselinge wendingen volgen elkaar in hoog tempo op. Naast de heavy riffs en diverse toetsinstrumenten hoor je het geluid van blazers. Daarnaast is er ook het geluid van een ‘Glockenspiel’ toegevoegd. Bovendien zijn er verassende rusten in verwerkt, er komt dus nogal wat op je af. Dit tweede nummer lijkt plotseling te eindigen, maar het is een onverwachte twist. De muziek gaat nu hele andere kant op. Toch merk je al snel dat het wel degelijk bij elkaar hoort. De opbouw naar het einde is bijzonder.
Na het plotselinge einde van ‘New Reality’ volgt de snelle, maar minder heavy start van ‘Circus Maximus’. De toetsen zijn hier meer aanwezig dan de snaren. Er is sampling van het geroezemoes van mensen. Hier doorheen klinkt het sombere geluid van strijkinstrumenten. Dit nummer is iets rustiger, toch zijn er soms grote veranderingen. Zo groot, dat het in eerste instantie een nieuw nummer lijkt. Er zijn diverse geluiden toegevoegd, onder andere het geluid van een ‘hartslag’. Deze goede epic eindigt minimalistisch.
Ook in de laatste drie nummers komt er veel op je af qua sampling, toetsen, zwaar bespeelde snaren en enkele licht klassieke elementen. Sommige wendingen volgen elkaar razendsnel op. Enkele veranderingen duren maar een paar seconden. Er blijft een constante wisselwerking tussen allerlei instrumenten en stijlen.
De muziek is met vlagen onrustig en gaat bijna alle kanten op, toch vliegen ze niet uit de bocht. Hun omschrijving van muzikale achtbaan klopt dus. Deze rit voelt als rollercoaster. Maar de rit van ‘A secret place’ is beter uitgebalanceerd dan hun debuutalbum.

Force of Progress – A secret place
The German prog project Force of Progress consists of four experienced musicians, most of them playing keyboards and synthesizers. There is not only a lot of ‘keyboard skills’ to be heard, also bass and guitar are fully featured, because there are several multi-instrumentalists in the band.
‘A secret place‘ is their second album. They describe their album more or less as follows: “it’s full steam ahead in this instrumental roller coaster”
‘The Hand Sculpted Heart‘ indeed starts with quite a bit of power. There is a mix of rock and electronic sounds. The music tumbles over and through as it were. In between all this there is piano playing, a bit later this is almost solo. The tempo is high with gusts and the metal is clearly present here. This opening track ends with some piano sounds.
The start of ‘The Perfect Element‘ is pleasantly heavy. Suddenly there is a turn to quiet part and the sound goes nicely around in the headphones.
The often-sudden turns follow each other in high tempo. Alongside the heavy riffs and various keyboards, you can hear the sound of ‘horns’. Also, the sound of a ‘Glockenspiel’ has been added. Moreover, there are surprising rests in it, so there is quite a lot coming your way. This second track seems to end suddenly, but it is an unexpected twist. The music is going in a completely different direction now. However, you soon notice that it does belong together. The build-up to the end is special.
After the sudden end of ‘New Reality‘ follows the fast but less heavy start of ‘Circus Maximus‘. The keys are more present here than (bass)guitars. There is sampling of the murmur of people. Through this the gloomy sound of string instruments is heard. This song is a bit quieter, yet sometimes there are big changes. So big, that at first it looks like a new song. Several sounds have been added, including the sound of a ‘heartbeat’. This good epic ends minimalistic.
Also, in the last three songs a lot of sampling, keyboards, heavily played (bass)guitars and some slightly classical elements come to the front. Some twists and turns follow each other very fast. Some changes only last a few seconds. There is a constant interaction between all kinds of instruments and styles.
The music is restless with gusts and goes almost in all directions, yet they don’t ‘drift out of orbit’. So, their description of musical roller coaster is correct. This ride feels like rollercoaster. But the ride of ‘A secret place‘ is better balanced than their debut album.
