There are more bands with the name Argus. But I am going to talk about the Dutch band. These guys from Brabant started out as a Wishbone Ash cover band, until keyboardist/vocalist Frans Nooijen joined. After that, the band started making their own melodic prog. Around the time their debut album ‘Tell me‘ (2016) was released, Marijn Schellekens took over from Sven de Waal. With this ‘new’ line-up, they released their album ‘The Outsider’ at the end of last year.

Depressed’ has a spherical start. After about four minutes, Frans sings his first sentences. If you know their debut album, you will recognize his striking voice immediately. Vocal parts are alternated with long instrumental sections. Especially in the instrumental passages, there are plenty of changes, most of them smooth. The guitar playing is an important part. One moment it is compelling, and another moment more rocking. The a capella vocals are surprising. This opening track is a fine epic. Also, in ‘Some Time’ you can hear that the sound is a bit more rich than on their debut, that’s definitely a plus. Moreover, the structure of the songs has improved. Marijn’s drumming is more dynamic than that of his predecessor. All this makes the listening experience more interesting.

The title track starts very softly, but I am immediately captivated. The soft voice of Frans is almost tender. For the first bit, Marijn keeps his drumsticks quiet, then he drums for a while in a quiet rhythm. The melody is gentle and fits nicely with the guitar playing. The sound in Frank’s voice is driven, unfortunately not everything can be understood. There are several nice rests, and the details are nicely inserted. The changes in rhythm are good. Moreover, when one instrument comes to the fore, another is ‘pushed’ to the foreground. The Theremin is very audible, ‘Outsider’ is a wonderful epic until the cool unexpected end.

The intro of ‘Breaking Chains’ is mysterious and has light classical elements. The sound of strings lacks some warmth. Then follows a diversely played piece of prog rock, with excellent bass and guitar skills. At times, the keyboards are bombastic and the drums exhilarating. You can hear the characteristic sounds of the Theremin. In the slower part, the volume changes only slightly. During piano playing, the music becomes spherical and the volume goes down. Then you notice that this is where the song ends. After three epics, this last song is a bit shorter than hoped for.

As said before, the sound quality is better than on their debut album. But the rocking parts could have had a bit more body. Besides, the volume difference with the quietly played parts is too small. Yet it is clear Argus has developed itself, you notice more passion in vocals and music, and the structure is better. The division between strings and keyboards is fine. There are many nice details in the music and you keep hearing new things after listening a few times. There will probably be a release party. How and when is still unclear, of course. But now that I’ve played ‘Outsider’ a few times, I’m getting more and more curious to see Argus live.

Argus – The Outsider

Er zijn meer bands met de naam Argus. Maar ik ga het hebben over de Nederlandse band. Deze Brabanders begonnen ooit als Wishbone Ash coverband, totdat toetsenist/zanger Frans Nooijen erbij kwam. Daarna begon de band zelf melodische prog te maken. Rond de tijd dat hun debuutalbum ‘Tell me’ (2016) uitkwam, nam Marijn Schellekens het stokje over van Sven de Waal. Met deze ‘nieuwe’ samenstelling brachten ze eind vorig jaar hun album ‘The Outsider’ uit.

‘Depressed’ heeft een sferische start. Na zo’n minuut of vier zingt Frans zijn eerste zinnen. Als je hun debuutalbum kent, herken je zijn markante stem direct. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met ruime instrumentale stukken. Vooral in de instrumentale stukken zijn er volop veranderingen, de meeste verlopen vloeiend. Het gitaarspel vormt een belangrijk onderdeel. Het ene moment is het meeslepend, en een ander moment meer rockend. De a capella zang is verrassend. Deze openingstrack is een prima epic. Ook in ‘Some Time’ hoor je dat het geluid wat voller is dan op hun debuut, dat is zeker een pluspunt. Bovendien is de opbouw van de nummers verbeterd. Daarbij drumt Marijn dynamischer dan zijn voorganger. Dit alles maakt de luisterbeleving interessanter.

De titeltrack begint heel zacht, maar ik ben wel meteen geboeid. De zachte stem van Frans is bijna teder. Het eerste stukje houdt Marijn zijn drumstokken stil, daarna drumt hij even in een rustig ritme. De melodie is zachtaardig en sluit mooi aan bij het gitaarspel. De klank in Frank’s stem wordt gedreven, jammer genoeg is niet alles te verstaan. Er zijn verschillende leuke rusten, en de details zijn prima ingelast. De veranderingen in ritme verlopen goed. Bovendien komt dan het ene instrument meer naar voren, dan wordt een ander instrument naar voorgrond ‘geduwd’. De Theremin is goed hoorbaar, ‘Outsider’ is tot en met het gave onverwachte einde een heerlijke epic.

Het intro van ‘Breaking Chains’ is mysterieus en heeft licht klassieke elementen. Het geluid van strijkinstrumenten mist wat warmte. Dan volgt er een divers gepeeld stuk prog rock, met prima bas-en gitaarspel. Met vlagen is het toetsenwerk lekker bombastisch, en de drums opzwepend. Je hoort de kenmerkende klanken van de Theremin. In het langzamere deel verandert het volume maar een beetje. Tijdens pianospel wordt de muziek sferisch muziek en gaat het volume omlaag. Dan merk je dat hiermee het nummer eindigt. Na drie epics, is dit laatste nummer wel wat korter dan gehoopt.

Zoals eerder gezegd is de geluidskwaliteit is beter dan op hun debuutalbum. Maar de rockende delen wat meer body mogen hebben. Daarnaast is volumeverschil met de rustig gespeelde delen te klein. Toch is het duidelijk dat Argus zich heeft ontwikkeld, je merkt meer bezieling in zang en muziek, en de opbouw is beter. De verdeling tussen snaren en toetsen is prima. Er zijn veel leuke details in de muziek en je hoort ook na een paar keer luisteren steeds nieuwe dingen. Waarschijnlijk komt er nog een releaseparty. Hoe en wanneer is nu natuurlijk nog onduidelijk. Maar nu ik ‘Outsider’ een aantal keer gedraaid heb, word ik steeds nieuwsgieriger om Argus live te kunnen zien.
