‘Vibe for Philo’ or ‘The Vibe’ is the yearly remembrance of Phil Lynott, who died in 1986. This memorial started very small, but grew into a mecca for fans of Phil Lynott and “his” rock band Thin Lizzy.
Every year, fans from all over the world come to Dublin. In 2000, the citizen of Weert (The Netherlands), Peter Vleeshouwers, visited this commemoration for the first time. Since then, this music lover has wondered why this was not possible in the Netherlands. In 2011 he met Roger Rutten, who runs his own music agency. Roger wanted Parris, the Dutch Thin Lizzy tribute band, to perform in Weert. Peter thought, if this is going to happen in my town, then I want to be involved. This is how the plan was born to set up a ‘Dutch Vibe’. On 7 January 2012, the first edition took place in Muziekcentrum De Bosuil, then still under the name ‘Remember Phil’.
To also honour Gary Moore (who passed away in 2011), the name was changed to ‘Remember Phil and Gary’ a year later. The interest in this commemoration was very high. Therefore, since 2014 there have been two shows, in two different cities. Every year the best tribute bands from the Netherlands and abroad perform to pay tribute to these musical heroes who passed away way too early. The tenth edition would have been in 2021, but Covid made it impossible. And the 2022 edition was also postponed, unfortunately. Peter wanted to make a digital photo book for the visitors, musicians and volunteers of ‘RP&G’. During these nine editions, countless photos were taken by professional photographers. They have selflessly supplied their photos. Peter then started to work on turning them into a digital reference book. Because of the (inbetween) positive response, Peter decided to make a physical book of it.
Black Rose
The book in A4 format lies in front of me; the solid cover is beautiful in its simplicity. The ‘Black Rose’ is of course immediately recognised by the fans. This book has a print run of 100 copies, all numbered by hand. The book starts with the introduction, The layout is designed in such a way that you first have to look at it extensively, and afterwards you will read it. These pages have the atmosphere of a scrapbook. A lot of attention has clearly been paid to this, which is very promising!
All editions of the concert series are shown. Of course, you will first see the photos of the very first concert. In one glance you can see the line up of the bands, the poster, and album covers of Thin Lizzy. Peter has done this in such a way that you don’t just browse, he really knows how to captivate you.
On the following pages, Peter tells something about the bands in small text blocks.These blocks are always different in colour, which gives a pleasant look. Some of the blocks are quite dark, which makes the text a bit more difficult to read. Because it is only a small amount of text, it’s not disturbing.
Philomena Lynott
A number of photos have been made free-standing, and in addition a few different frames have been used. The balance between these is perfect: the look is casual and informal. Yet the whole thing has remained clear. The book even has a ribbon bookmark, so you don’t need a bookmark. I can imagine that you wouldn’t put the book down. It is a feast of recognition for those who have been there. But also those who regularly visit blues and/or rock concerts (in the South of the Netherlands) will see familiar faces. Because many of the (regional) musicians play in various bands. During the 2013 concert you see a very young Guy Smeets, he was a guest musician with the Irish band Bad Reputation.
Each page is a collage in itself: you see pictures of newspaper articles, merchandise, tokens and the like. All the pages are different, but they do form a unit. In 2014, Philomena Lynott was a special guest for the first time. She was proud that her son was honoured with these fantastic shows. She has been there every time since, which is reflected in the photo book. While browsing and reading, the memories come alive again.
Patricia Moore
The handwritten letters give just that little extra. For example, the letter of thanks from Brush Shiels, the bassist of Skid Row, who performed in 2016. And not to forget a beautiful, full-length letter from Patricia Moore. With the envelope in the background, Peter has clearly thought about the styling. Although there are a few minor flaws in terms of layout. On a few pages a part of a text, poster or photo is not entirely visible. The middle is lost in the back of the book. Moreover, some people look “off the page”. Peter could have mirrored those photos, moved them or placed them on the adjacent page. Then the faces of these musicians would have been faced towards the middle of the book. That would have looked more professional.
Ode to Philomena
Philomena passed away in June 2019, so a tribute was paid to her in 2020. This was one of the few subdued moments, but one of the most beautiful memories.
Who could have imagined during this 2020 edition that the Corona crisis would hit so hard, and especially last so long… This beautiful reference book is a welding together of beautiful memories. It’ s a wonderful example of what a fan book should look like. The book is almost sold out, but certainly deserves a reprint.

Peter Vleeshouwers – Remember Phil & Gary – Picture book
‘Vibe for Philo’ kortweg ‘The Vibe’ is de jaarlijkse herdenking van Phil Lynott, die in 1986 overleed.
Deze herdenking begon heel klein, maar groeide uit tot een mekka voor fans van Phil Lynott en “zijn” rockband Thin Lizzy. Ieder jaar komen fans van over de hele wereld naar Dublin. In 2000 bezocht de Weertenaar Peter Vleeshouwers deze herdenking voor het eerst. Sindsdien vroeg deze muziekliefhebber zich af waarom dit in Nederland niet mogelijk was. In 2011 ontmoette hij Roger Rutten, die zijn eigen music agency runt. Roger wilde Parris, de Nederlandse Thin Lizzy tribute band in Weert laten optreden. Toen dacht Peter, als dit in mijn stad gaat gebeuren, dan wil ik erbij betrokken zijn. Zo is het plan ontstaan om een ‘Dutch Vibe’ op te zetten. 7 januari 2012 vond de eerste editie plaats in Muziekcentrum De Bosuil, toen nog onder de naam ‘Remember Phil’.

Daarom zijn er sinds 2014 twee shows, in twee verschillende steden. Ieder jaar treden er de beste tribute bands uit Nederland en daar buiten op om een ode te brengen aan deze veel te vroeg overleden muzikale grootheden. De tiende editie zou in 2021 geweest zijn, maar dat kon door Covid niet door gaan. En ook de editie van 2022 werd helaas uitgesteld. Peter wilde voor de bezoekers, muzikanten en voor de vrijwilligers van ‘RP&G’ een digitaal fotoboek maken. Tijdens deze negen edities zijn er talloze foto’s gemaakt door professionele fotografen. Zij hebben hun foto’s belangeloos aangeleverd. Vervolgens is Peter aan de slag gegaan om er een digitaal naslagwerk van te maken. Door de (tussentijdse) positieve reacties heeft Peter besloten om er een fysiek boek van te gaan maken.
Black Rose
Voor me ligt het boek op A4 formaat, de stevige cover is mooi in zijn eenvoud. De ‘Black Rose’ wordt door de fans natuurlijk meteen herkend. Dit boek heeft een oplage van 100 stuks, deze zijn allemaal met de hand genummerd. Het boek begint bij de introductie, deze is zo opgemaakt dat je eerst uitgebreid gaat kijken, en daarna pas lezen. Deze pagina’s hebben de sfeer van een scrapbook/plakboek. Hier is duidelijk veel zorg aan besteed, dat belooft veel goeds!
Alle edities van de concertenreeks komen aan bod. Natuurlijk zie je als eerste de foto’s van het allereerste concert. In één oogopslag zie je line up van de bands, de poster, en albumcovers van Thin Lizzy. Dit heeft Peter zo gedaan dat je niet zo maar even bladert, hij weet je echt te boeien.
Op de pagina’s hierna vertelt Peter (in het Engels) in korte tekstblokken iets over de bands. Deze blokken zijn steeds anders van kleur, wat een leuke uitstraling geeft. Een enkel vlak is vrij donker waardoor de tekst soms iets moeilijker te lezen is. Omdat het maar weinig tekst is, is dit niet storend.
Philomena Lynott
Een aantal foto’s zijn vrijstaand gemaakt, daarnaast zijn er een paar verschillende kaders gebruikt. De balans hiertussen is perfect: de uitstraling is ongedwongen en informeel. Toch is het geheel overzichtelijk gebleven. Het boek heeft zelfs een leeslint, zodat je geen boekenlegger nodig hebt. Ik kan me goed voorstellen dat je het boek liever niet weg legt. Het is een feest van herkenning voor wie er bij is geweest. Maar ook degene die regelmatig blues en/of rock concerten (in het zuiden) bezoekt ziet bekende gezichten. Want veel van de (regionale) muzikanten spelen/speelden in diverse bands. Tijdens het concert van 2013 zie je een piep jonge Guy Smeets, hij was toen gastmuzikant bij de Ierse band Bad Reputation.
Ieder pagina is een collage op zichzelf: je ziet foto’s van krantenartikelen, merchandise artikelen, consumptiemuntjes en dergelijke. Alle pagina’s zijn verschillend, maar ze vormen wel degelijk een eenheid. In 2014 was Philomena Lynott voor het eerst special guest. Ze was trots dat haar zoon met deze fantastische shows werd geëerd. Sindsdien was ze er iedere keer bij, dat is terug te zien in het fotoboek. Al bladerend en lezend komen de herinneringen opnieuw tot leven.
Patricia Moore
De handgeschreven brieven geven net dat beetje extra’s. Bijvoorbeeld de bedankbrief van Brush Shiels, de bassist van Skid Row, die in 2016 optrad. En niet te vergeten een mooie, lange brief van Patricia Moore. Met op de achtergrond de envelop, Peter heeft duidelijk nagedacht over de vormgeving. Al zijn er qua opmaak wel een paar kleine minpuntjes. Op een enkele bladzijde is een deel van een tekst, poster of foto niet helemaal zichtbaar. Het midden valt weg in de rug van het boek. Bovendien kijken sommige personen “van de pagina af”. Die foto’s had Peter kunnen spiegelen, verschuiven of op de naastgelegen pagina kunnen plaatsen. Dan was het gezicht van deze muzikanten naar het midden van het boek gericht geweest. Dat had er professioneler uitgezien.
Ode aan Philomena
In juni 2019 overleed Philomena, daarom werd er in 2020 een ode gebracht aan haar. Dit was één van de weinige ingetogen momenten, maar wel één van de mooiste herinneringen.
Wie had tijdens deze editie van 2020 kunnen bedenken dat de Corona crisis zo hard toe zou slaan, en vooral zo lang zou duren… Dit mooie naslagwerk is een aaneensluiting van mooie herinneringen. Het is een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe een fanboek er uit hoort te zien. Het boek is al bijna uitverkocht, maar verdient zeker een herdruk.
