The Woods – Hurricane

The Dutch blues rock band The Woods exists about 5 years, but the men have been active in music for longer. Because The Woods was born out of a power trio that started about 20 years ago. The name JeeBee or Joris Bos will be familiar to the blues/rock fans. If you have trouble remembering names, you will probably recognize his voice during the opening track ‘Broken’. And if the voice is new to you, you might appreciate it immediately. His voice is warm, but he also has a slightly rough edge to it. The backing vocals are perfectly dosed. Vocals and music complement each other perfectly. The keyboards are heard a lot, the guitar work is very good. This is complemented by the rhythm section with a fine flow.

The title track starts more quietly than you might expect. After a few listens you can sing along with parts of ‘Hurricane’, because Joris has a clear pronunciation. His guitar playing is slightly ‘screaming’ at times. The rhythm becomes exhilarating, after which there is a transition to a smaller played part. Here too, the details come into their own. After the next exciting piece, the song seems to be ending. But again, there is a change to a beautiful minimalist part, after which it ends unexpectedly. The catchy ‘Prettiest Thing’ is followed by the laid back ‘All Again’. The percussion fits in perfectly. Everything is played and sung sensitively, the backing vocals are minimal, but again perfect. When the tempo speeds up a little, the guitar playing becomes more intense. But the ballad feeling remains; even when Joris changes the emotion in his voice from romantic to fiery. The decrescendo, this is the slowdown and reduction in volume at the end, is very good. After this, it dies away beautifully on the keys.

The changes of tempo and volume in ‘Our Love’ are fine, although they are a bit predictable after a while. The intro of ‘One Time Kiss’ has a special combination of guitar and vocals. The slightly dingy sound fits the atmosphere. The rather calm, but tightly played percussion invites live interaction with the audience. The balance between vocal and instrumental parts is good. Joris sings his words credibly. Especially when he sings almost solo, he sings straight from the heart. The music matches this perfectly. This sensitive song is a nice ending to a good EP. The Woods has its own sound and style. You can hear a lot of keys, sometimes played at the same time. The instruments are well balanced, and the music and ( backing ) vocals form a unity all the time. A single section is a bit predictable, but otherwise these 6 blues rock songs are well constructed. Hurricane’ has a slight retro atmosphere. Hopefully there will be a full CD soon, because this tastes like more!

The Woods – Hurricane
