Stef Paglia Trio – Light & Darkness

Stef Paglia is best known as the guitarist of The BluesBones (Belgium). In addition, he is the frontman of his own band, called Stef Paglia Trio. Their EP ‘Light & Darkness’ will be released (digitally and physically) in early 2023. As the title suggests, the songs are about the ups and downs of life.

‘Stand Up’ has a wonderful instrumental start, where the guitar can be clearly heard. But the bass also comes out nicely. Stef has a clear pronunciation, occasionally background vocals are added. This opening track has a pleasant flow, and soon gets stuck in your head. The unexpected ending is nice. The tempo of ‘Blue Eyes’ is pleasantly slow. Stef’s rather soft voice comes into its own here. The guitar playing intensifies. The rhythm section with Sven Bloemen on drums/percussion and bassist Geert Schurmans form an important part. This number ends quite suddenly

Also in ‘Queen Of The Darkness’ the tempo is quite slow, but the set-up is very different from the previous songs. The backing vocals are a bit sweet, and therefore form a contrast with the slightly “rougher” guitar playing. The rhythm section is steady at times. At a certain point the tempo goes up, especially the guitar playing gets faster. Actually, I expected a somewhat longer instrumental piece, but there is a surprising, but short build-up towards the end.

Due to the accessible structure and the rather sweet backing vocals of ‘Please Come Back To Me’, the song is pleasant to listen to. But you might be missing some intensity. This intensity is there in the first tones of ‘Chasing Dreams’. Stef certainly sings credibly in certain parts. The minimalist instrumental piece is nicely balanced. Because of the way this last song is built up, it is sometimes a bit predictable.

Stef can convey emotion very well with his guitar, in the combination of guitar and vocals there are still opportunities for growth. Geert and Sven do the backing vocals. Their way of singing is sometimes quite sweet, but their voices fit nicely with Stef’s voice. Vocals and music are constantly in balance, but the structure of the songs is not very surprising. That may be because the songs are about 3.30 – 4.30 minutes. As a result, there are few possibilities for extensive solos and/or a dynamic build-up. The contrasts between the different guitar sounds could have come out a little better. Still, one can certainly enjoy softer dreamy sounds. Stef Paglia Trio has released an atmospheric, timeless atmospheric EP with ‘Light & Darkness’.

Stef Paglia Trio – Light & Darkness

Stef Paglia kent men vooral als gitarist van The BluesBones (België).

instrumentale stuk is mooi in evenwicht.
