In de coronatijd is een nieuwe blues-supergroep opgestaan. De line-up van Birdmens is niet de minste, waaronder Ian Siegal, Joel Fisk en Jon Amor. Samen hebben deze acht mannen bijna 200 jaar podiumervaring. Door de lockdown waren geen optredens, geen inkomsten, maar muzikanten kunnen natuurlijk niet zonder muziek. Daarom hebben zij deze periode gebruikt om een album uit te brengen. De nummers zijn opgenomen met gsm en/of goedkope microfoons, de slaapkamer of keuken werd gebruikt als studio. Met dit low-budget album tonen ze hun veerkracht, en laten ze zien dat ze genoeg levenskracht hebben om positief met deze wereldwijde pandemie om te gaan.

‘Lockdown Loaded’ heeft een heerlijke start met ‘Cat Drugged Up’. Dit is lekkere old school blues, waarin de blues harp mooi naar voren komt. De zang klinkt vervormd, het geluid van de muziek is vintage. Maar dat past bij de muziek, bovendien is het niet te groezelig. Deze openingstrack is relaxed en toch opzwepend. Als vanzelf beweeg ik mee met de muziek. Wat zou dit een feestje zijn als Birdmens met deze samenstelling op het podium zou staan.
Dit gevoel blijft bestaan in ‘Hipbone’. Na een paar keer luisteren kun je delen van de tekst meezingen, stilzitten gaat bijna niet. Ook in ‘Star’ blijft deze flow bestaan. Het orgel is vrij ver op de achtergrond, de snaren en harmonica zijn aangenaam aanwezig en de piano dwarrelt er af en toe heerlijk doorheen. De nummers met zorg gecomponeerd en gespeeld. Ze zitten vol details, maar deze zijn door het groezelige geluid wat lastiger te horen. Daarnaast komen niet alle laagjes in de muziek goed tot zijn recht. Toch geniet ik van dit alles.

De hoge zang in ‘Heal Thyself’ is best verrassend als je het vergelijkt met de voorgaande nummers. Op enkele momenten is de zang bijna solo, het doffe geluid is dan even weg. De muziek is in mid tempo, er is lekker veel orgelspel. Het gitaarspel bestaat uit verschillende laagjes, alles is prima aangevuld door de ritmesectie.

Ieder nummer bevat mooie elementen, zo hoor je in ’Holler’ onder andere heerlijke harmonicatonen, en weer dwarrelt de piano er gracieus doorheen. De basis is ‘ouderwetse’ blues, toch is het niet oubollig.

‘Cover It Up’ start heel anders na het vrolijk klinkende ‘What’s The Name’. Het instrumentale intro is lekker uitgebreid, de sfeer is in eerste instantie laidback. Er zijn leuke, subtiele wisselingen in tempo en volume. Vocale en instrumentale stukken wisselen elkaar ook af. Weer zijn er mooie details in de muziek.

Tot slot ‘Birdmens’, deze begint met zang en een vleugje muziek, het orgel hoor je mooi op de achtergrond. Zang en muziek blijven ingetogen. Ondanks de ingetogen muziek, zitten er leuke details in verweven. Jammer dat dit laatste nummer vrij kort is.

Een enkel nummer is op het einde net iets te vroeg afgekapt. Alle nummers hebben een aangename flow, over het algemeen in mid tempo, waarmee je vanzelf mee beweegt.
Met deze line-Up had ik een gave cd verwacht en dat maken de mannen waar. Er was namelijk een grote valkuil.. het had zo maar gekund dat de mannen te gretig waren, te veel hadden gewild. Want deze talentvolle muzikanten kunnen zóveel. Gelukkig zijn ze absoluut niet in deze valkuil getrapt! Want het is nergens over de top. Ook de achtergrondzang is nergens te veel of te voorspelbaar toegepast. Dit album is in beperkte oplage als cd en op vinyl verkrijgbaar. Hoewel het geluid niet perfect is, hebben ze gezien de mogelijkheden wel het beste eruit gehaald. Kortom, ‘Birdmens’ heeft de lockdown goed besteed.
Hopelijk zien we deze mannen, met welke band dan ook weer snel live. ‘Birdmens’ als band compleet op het podium, dat zou helemaal een feestje zijn.

Birdmens – Lockdown Loaded

A new blues supergroup emerged during the coronation period. The lineup of Birdmens is not the weakest. Together these eight men have almost 200 years of stage experience. Because of the lockdown there were no performances, no income, but of course, musicians can’t live without music. That’s why they used this time period to release an album. The songs were recorded with cell phones and/or cheap microphones, the bedroom or kitchen was used as a studio. With this low-budget album they show their resilience, and show that they have enough strength to deal positively with this worldwide pandemic.

‘Lockdown Loaded’ has a wonderful start with ‘Cat Drugged Up’. This is nice old school blues, in which the blues harp comes out nicely. The vocals are distorted, the sound of the music is vintage. But that suits the music, besides, it’s not too dingy. This opening track is relaxed yet exhilarating. What a party this would be if Birdmens would be on stage with this line-up.
This feeling remains in ‘Hipbone‘. After listening a few times, you can sing along parts of the lyrics, sitting still is almost impossible. Also, in ‘Star‘ this flow remains. The organ is quite far in the background, the ‘strings’ and harmonica are pleasantly present and the piano occasionally whirls wonderfully through it. The songs are composed and played with care. They are full of details, but because of the dull sound they are a bit more difficult to hear. Not all layers in the music come into their own. Still I enjoy all of this.

The high vocals in ‘Heal Thyself‘ are quite surprising when you compare it with the previous songs. On some moments the vocals are almost solo, the dull sound is gone for a while. The music is in mid-tempo, there is a lot of organ playing. The guitar playing consists of several layers, everything is nicely complemented by the rhythm section.

Every song contains beautiful elements, as you can hear in ‘Holler‘ amongst others delicious harmonica tones, and again the piano whirls gracefully through it. The basic is old school blues, yet it is not old-fashioned.

‘Cover It Up‘ starts very different after the cheerful sounding ‘What’s The Name‘. The instrumental intro is nicely extended, the atmosphere is laid back at first. There are nice, subtle changes in tempo and volume. Vocal and instrumental pieces alternate as well. Again, there are nice details in the music.

Closing ‘Birdmens‘, this one starts with vocals and a touch of music, the organ can be heard nicely in the background. Vocals and music remain subdued. Despite the subdued music, there are nice details interwoven in it. Too bad that this last song is rather short.

A few songs are cut a little too early at the end. All songs have a pleasant flow, generally in mid-tempo, with which you move along naturally.
With this line up I expected an amazing CD, and these guys live up to that. There was a big pitfall… it could have been that the men were too eager, and wanted too much. Because these talented musicians can do so much. Luckily, they didn’t fall into this trap at all! After all, it’s nowhere over the top. Also, the backing vocals are nowhere applied too much or too predictably. This album is available in limited edition as a CD and on vinyl. Although the sound is not perfect, they got the best out of it in these circumstances. So, ‘Birdmens‘ has spent the lockdown very well.
Hopefully we’ll see these guys, with any band, live again soon. ‘Birdmens‘ as a band completely on stage, that would be quite a party.
