Films, TV series and Iceland inspired ‘In Between’, the debut album by Japanese composer/pianist Emi Nishida. The first tones of ‘Yanse’ are subdued but intense; they touch me immediately. It stays that way also when the cinematic elements are added. The extraordinary sequel is totally different from what was expected. Partly due to the Asian influences, the instrumental opening track continues to captivate. The tender vocals and music in ‘Morgun Dögg’ belong to a sweet, personal experience in Iceland. Piano lovers will enjoy ‘In Between’: there is a lot of variety in the sometimes experimental title track. The (mysterious) compositions of ‘Sorbet’ and Radiance also stand out as special. On her (largely instrumental) album, Emi Nishida’ mixes classical music with other styles. In doing so, she creates her own style. Because of the sublime sound, the details, and the intense way of playing, you feel the (classical) music in every fibre of your body

Films, tv-series en IJsland vormden de inspiratiebronnen voor ‘In Between’, het debuutalbum van de Japanse componist/pianist Emi Nishida. De eerste tonen van ’Yanse’ zijn ingetogen maar intens, ze raken me direct. Dat blijft zo, ook als de filmische elementen erbij komen. Het bijzondere vervolg is totaal anders dan verwacht. Mede door de Aziatische invloeden blijft de instrumentale openingstrack boeien. De tedere zang en muziek in ‘Morgun Dögg’ horen bij een zoete, persoonlijke ervaring in IJsland. Pianoliefhebbers zullen genieten van ’In Between’: er zit veel variatie in de soms experimenteel opgezette titeltrack. Ook de (mysterieuze) composities van ‘Sorbet’ en Radiance zijn speciaal. Op haar (grotendeels instrumentale) album mengt Emi Nishida’ klassieke muziek met andere stijlen. Hiermee creëert ze een eigen stijl. Door het sublieme geluid, de details, en de intenste manier van spelen voel je de (klassieke) muziek in iedere vezel van je lichaam.
