The Fierce and the Dead was formed some 13 years ago as an instrumental band. But for several years, Kevin Feazey has been the vocalist of this English band in addition to being the bassist. They play a mix of various types of rock, adding metal, shoegaze and analogue synthesizers. The band has toured with bands like Hawkwind, Crippled Black Phoenix and many others. They have performed at several bigger festivals, for example: Prognosis and Rosfest.

‘The Start’ starts calmly, Kevin has a clear pronunciation. The background vocals are half spoken, half sung. After that, the intensity in vocals and music increases considerably. This nicely constructed opening song dies away nicely. At the start of ‘Shake The Jar’, tempo and volume are quite high, again Kevin can be clearly heard. There are quite a few changes in tempo and volume. Not only do you hear a pleasant amount of guitar playing, the bass is also clearly heard; sometimes even in the foreground. At times, the stacked vocals are dreamy yet captivating. Due to the surprising twists and turns, this track too, up to and including its sudden end, remains captivating.

The same goes for the tracks that follow. The balance between rhythm and melody is good. The alternation or melange between heavier music and lighter elements is good. Everything is well spread over the headphones. There are many surprising details and twists. Sometimes the music goes against each other, yet everything remains balanced. Even the vocals, which occasionally sound distorted, remain in harmony with the music. ‘Wonderful’ has a dingy start, this forms a fine blend with the bright sounds. Again, the (stacked) vocals are surprising. After a few listens, you can largely sing along to this catchy track. The rhythm in ‘Non-Player’ is calm, yet there are plenty of details and (subtle) changes. At one point, tempo and volume are quite high, moments later everything is very calm again. Stuart Marshall drums in service of it all. The saxophone playing is a special addition.

Thanks to the good sound quality, the contrast between the high and low (dingy) tones in ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ comes out well. This song is almost entirely instrumental. The emotion on the voice in ‘Nostalgia Now’, together with the subdued music, immediately grabs my attention. The tender piano playing, and the twists and turns that follow, match this nicely. The subdued part is well played and sung, you can hear the emotion in the vocals. The light classical elements fit in nicely here. Again there is a cool change to heavier music, lighter sounds are sprinkled through this. Despite these contrasts, and the light “frenzy” that follows, everything remains balanced. The build-up to the end is extraordinary.

The songs are accessible and complex at the same time. As told earlier, this is an album with many twists and details. Moreover, there are sometimes great contrasts, many layers in vocals and/or music. Furthermore, there are various musical styles, which is why ‘News From The Invisible World’ may need some time to grow. The Fierce and the Dead have made another exceptional album.

The Fierce and the Dead – News From The Invisible World

The Fierce and the Dead werd zo’n 13 jaar geleden als instrumentale band opgericht. Maar sinds een aantal jaar is Kevin Feazey naast bassist ook de zanger van deze Engelse band. Ze spelen een mix van diverse soorten rock, en voegen er metal, shoegaze en analoge synthesizers aan toe. De band heeft getoerd met bands als Hawkwind, Crippled Black Phoenix en vele andere. Ze stonden op diverse grotere festivals, bijvoorbeeld: Prognosis en Rosfest.

‘The Start’ begint kalm, Kevin heeft een duidelijke uitspraak. De achtergrond zang is half gesproken, half gezongen. Daarna neemt de intensiteit in zang en muziek behoorlijk toe. Dit prima opgebouwde openingsnummer sterft mooi weg. Bij aanvang van ‘Shake The Jar’ liggen tempo en volume best hoog, ook hier is Kevin goed te verstaan. Er zijn een behoorlijk aantal wisselingen in tempo en volume. Je hoort niet alleen aangenaam veel gitaar spel, ook de bas is duidelijk te horen; soms zelfs op de voorgrond. Met vlagen is de gestapelde zang dromerig en toch boeiend. Door de verrassende wendingen blijft ook deze track, tot en met het plotselinge einde, boeien.

Dat geldt ook voor de nummers die volgen. De balans tussen ritme en melodie is goed. De afwisseling dan wel de melange tussen zwaardere muziek en lichtere elementen is goed. Alles is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Er zijn veel verrassende details en wendingen. Soms gaat de muziek tegen elkaar in, toch blijft het geheel in evenwicht. Ook de zang, die af en toe vervormd klinkt, blijft in harmonie met de muziek. ‘Wonderful’ heeft een groezelige start, dit vormt een prima melange met de heldere klanken. Ook hier is de (gestapelde) zang verrassend. Na een paar keer luisteren kun je deze pakkende track grotendeels meezingen. Het ritme in ‘Non-Player’ is rustig, toch zijn er volop details en (subtiele)veranderingen. Op een gegeven moment liggen tempo en volume best hoog, even later is alles weer heel rustig. Stuart Marshall drumt in dienst van het geheel. Het saxofoonspel vormt een bijzonder toevoeging.

Door de goede geluidskwaliteit komt het contrast tussen de hoge en lage (groezelige) tonen in ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ goed naar voren. Dit nummer is bijna geheel instrumentaal. De emotie op de stem in ‘Nostalgia Now’ trekt, samen met de ingetogen muziek meteen mijn aandacht. Het tedere pianospel, en de wendingen die hierop volgen, sluiten hier mooi bij aan. Het ingetogen deel is goed gespeeld en gezongen, je hoort de emotie in de zang. De licht klassieke elementen passen hier prima bij. Weer is er een gave verandering naar zwaardere muziek, hier worden lichtere klanken doorheen gestrooid. Ondanks deze tegenstellingen, en de lichte “hectiek” die volgt blijft het geheel in evenwicht. De opbouw naar het einde is bijzonder.

De nummers zijn toegankelijk en complex tegelijk. Zoals eerder verteld, is dit een album met veel wendingen en details. Bovendien zijn er soms grote contrasten, veel laagjes in zang en/of muziek. Bovendien zijn er diverse muzikale stijlen, daarom moet ’News From The Invisible World’ misschien even groeien. The Fierce and the Dead heeft weer een bijzonder album gemaakt.
