Many bands used the lockdown(s) to release an album. English hard rock band TEN even made two (separate) albums during the pandemic. The first was released about a year ago. The second album, ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’, was released a few weeks ago (via Frontiers Music s.r.l. ).

The sampled sounds give the start of ‘Look For The Rose’ a spooky atmosphere; the spoken words match this. The instrumental piece that follows this is rousing. Gary Hughes has a clear pronunciation. He has not only the lead, but also the backing vocals. And it all sounds very good, plus he has a very pleasant voice. The guitar solo is screaming, but certainly not too heavy. Parts of the melody soon stick in your head. This opening track has nice details and is very accessible in concept. This is also reflected in the songs that follow. The sound is well distributed throughout the boxes. For hard rock, it may sound a little too clean and/or too smooth. You might find it a little too poppy. Whatever you think of it, vocals and music consistently form a unit. There is a good division/interchange between keyboards and guitar, both are regularly heard in the foreground. The rhythm section generally stays more in the background, but do complement it well.

‘Parabellum’ means to prepare for war. This theme can be heard back from the spoken words of the intro. The subject matter includes the Ukraine, but historical sound samples can also be heard. Despite the subject, vocals and music don’t get much heavier. The accessibility and uplifting atmosphere remain. This song ends with the sound of an air alert. ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ is quiet in concept. Tempo and volume go up a bit and a feel-good vibe emerges. This is enhanced at one point by whistling. The rock is not only in the background here, but also in, for example, ‘New Found Hope’. Also in this rather “sugary” song vocals form a nice blend with the music. The guitar playing provides a touch of spice, also the bass forms a fine contrast. The keyboards are in the foreground during the quiet intro of ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’. Vocals and music remain balanced, as both occasionally change in volume. It all listens through very easily. This last song slowly dies out.

Although there are few very big surprises, the songs do contain enough variety.
The stacked vocals are sometimes a bit sweet for a hard rock band, this fits in with the “not too heavy” music. Gary’s pleasant voice could also fit right into a great musical. The several layers of vocals and guitar are very good. Sometimes the rhythm is quite calm, another time exhilarating, here and there poppy elements can be heard. This accessible rock, and the way of mixing is suitable for a wide audience.

TEN – Something Wicked This Way Comes

Veel bands gebruikten de lockdown(s) om een album uit te brengen. De Engelse hardrock band TEN maakte zelfs twee (afzonderlijke) albums tijdens de pandemie. De eerste verscheen ongeveer een jaar geleden. Het tweede album, ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’, kwam een paar weken geleden (via Frontiers Music s.r.l. ) uit.

De gesampelde geluiden geven de start van ‘Look For The Rose’ een spookachtige sfeer, de gesproken woorden sluiten hier bij aan. Het instrumentale stuk wat hier op volgt is opzwepend. Gary Hughes heeft een duidelijke uitspraak. Hij heeft niet alleen de lead, maar ook de backing vocals. En dat klinkt allemaal erg goed, bovendien heeft hij een hele prettige stem. De gitaarsolo is gillend, maar zeker niet te heavy. Delen van de melodie blijven al snel in je hoofd kleven. Dit openingsnummer heeft leuke details en is heel toegankelijk van opzet. Dat is ook terug te horen in de nummers die volgen. Het geluid is goed verdeeld over de boxen. Voor hard rock klinkt het misschien een beetje te clean en/of te braaf. Wellicht vindt je het een beetje te poppy. Wat je er ook van vindt, zang en muziek vormen constant een eenheid. Er is een goede verdeling/afwisseling tussen toetsen en gitaar, beide zijn regelmatig op de voorgrond te horen. De ritmesectie blijft over het algemeen meer op de achtergrond, maar vormen wel degelijk een goede aanvulling.

‘Parabellum’ betekent een oorlog voorbereiden. Dit thema terug te horen aan de gesproken woorden van het intro. Het gaat onder andere over de Oekraïne, maar er zijn ook historische geluidsfragmenten te horen. Ondanks het onderwerp, worden zang en muziek niet veel zwaarder. De toegankelijkheid en de opzwepende sfeer blijven bestaan. Dit nummer eindigt met het geluid van een luchtalarm. ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ is rustig van opzet. Tempo en volume gaan wat omhoog en er ontstaat een feel good vibe. Dit wordt op een gegeven moment versterkt door het fluiten. De rock is niet alleen hier op de achtergrond, maar ook in bijvoorbeeld ‘New Found Hope’. Ook in dit nogal zoete nummer zang vormt een mooie melange met de muziek. Het gitaarspel zorgt voor een vleugje pit, ook de bas vormt een prima contrast. De toetsen zijn tijdens het rustige intro van ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’ op de voorgrond. Zang en muziek blijven in balans, want beiden veranderen af en toe in volume. Het luistert allemaal heel makkelijk weg. Dit laatste nummer dooft langzaam uit.

Hoewel er weinig hele grote verrassingen zijn, bevatten de nummers toch genoeg variatie.
De gestapelde zang is soms een beetje zoet voor een hard rock band, dit sluit aan bij de niet al te heavy muziek. Gary’s aangename stem zou ook zo in een grote musical kunnen passen. De meerdere laagjes zang en gitaar zijn erg goed. Soms is het ritme vrij kalm, een andere keer opzwepend, her en der zijn er poppy elementen te horen. Deze toegankelijke rock, en de manier van mixen is geschikt voor een breed publiek.
