Because of Corona, and its aftermath, it took a long time for singer/multi-instrumentalist Henrik Freischlader could perform again. About a year and a half ago, his band fell apart, and scheduled concerts were canceled. Meanwhile, Henrik continued to write, of course, so a new album was released. On this he played everything himself, except the Hammond organ. Moritz Fuhrhop not only played the Hammond parts on the album, he is also part of the live band. He is well known, as are bassist Armin Alic and drummer Hardy Fischötter. Sunday afternoon, March 12, was finally here: Henrik Freischlader performed with his band at De Bosuil in Weert.
After the doors opened, the venue slowly but surely filled up. It was pleasantly crowded when the lights dimmed a little later than planned and the band stepped onto the stage. Henrik began with a modest greeting after which the jam session started. There was a wonderful flow right away. Henrik made plenty of eye contact with Armin and Moritz. You immediately sensed that this was going to be a very good concert, as the chemistry between the band was evident. Henrik played his guitar with fire, which quite rightly resulted in intermittent applause. Hardy showed short solos every now and then, after each solo the band fell back in as one. Armin provided cool bass grooves, Moritz’s Hammond playing was very good. The band members all have a rather subdued way of performing, but you could see from their faces that they were having a good time. In short, this instrumental opening could not have been better.
Hendrik Freischlader, Recorded By Martin Meinschäfer II
The purpose of the ‘Bring Back Time Tour 2023’ was to promote the new album ‘Hendrik Freischlader, Recorded By Martin Meinschäfer II’ The first song played from this was ‘Free’. The balance between music and vocals was good. Although in the loud parts Henrik had a little trouble rising above the music. This was not a problem, because this song was also appreciated. So was the older ‘Disappointed Women’. The subdued played parts caused goosebumps. There were several sudden tempo and volume changes, these were played fine and rewarded with extra applause. Henrik visibly enjoyed Moritz’s beautiful Hammond playing. He praised Moritz, followed by applause. The build-up to the end was nice.
Then several songs from the new album were played, such as ‘Turn Back The Clock,’ with its beautiful listening lyrics, and ‘The Given Groove.’ Followed by ‘Lost Souls,’ the light suited this calm song. In the front of the venue everyone was silent, in the back there was still some talking, slowly it became quiet there too. Henrik sang and played sensitively, even when the music got a little louder. Especially during instrumental pieces you could feel the passion.
The last song before the break was ‘The Bridge’. Again the guitar playing was superb, which earned an extra applause. Henrik asked the audience to sing along with his wordless vocals. They did so, softly but respectfully. You could see the joy on his face.
The Question
After the break, the new album including ‘The Question’ came up again. People were touched by the slowly sung words. Moritz played lingering tones, the audience kept quiet until the last tone.
The varied set also included ‘Longer Days’ from 2011. Moritz and his Hammond were highlighted at just the right time, which gave the concert a little extra. Through nonverbal communication, the sudden end went well. Non-stop followed ‘She Ain’t Got the Blues’, and the cover “The Sky Is Crying. In which you could almost feel his pain. During a very subdued played part, the audience became silent. Tempo and volume were pushed up, then dropped again. This repeated itself a few times. Both the minimalist and fast parts were perfect. This version was pleasantly long, so the build-up to end was also stretched longer.
Bad Dreams
After the fantastic last song (with several solos), there was considerable clapping and yelling for more. The band was back pretty quickly to play ‘Bad Dreams’. Henrik started calmly, the rest of the band followed exactly at the right time. There was quite a lot of smoke on stage, leaving Hardy and Armin shrouded in fog. The turn to the subdued instrumental part, and the extended instrumental part itself were very good. In a quietly played part, Henrik showed guts by singing without a microphone for a moment, after which tempo and volume went up at once. A short time later this song, and thus this concert, ended very peacefully. The music was sometimes a little less subdued than usual, you did need your ear protection. The modest Henrik Freischlader and his band played as always without show elements. But their passion and love for the music was clearly felt.

Zo’n anderhalf jaar geleden viel zijn band uit elkaar, en werden de geplande concerten afgezegd. Ondertussen ging Henrik natuurlijk wel door met schrijven, zodoende kwam er een nieuw album uit. Hierop speelde hij alles zelf, behalve het Hammond orgel. Moritz Fuhrhop speelde niet alleen de Hammond partijen in op de cd, hij maakt ook deel uit van de live band. Hij is een bekende, net als bassist Armin Alic en drummer Hardy Fischötter. Zondagmiddag 12 maart was het eindelijk zover: Henrik Freischlader trad met zijn band op in De Bosuil in Weert.
Nadat de deuren geopend waren, stroomde de zaal langzaam maar zeker voller. Het was gezellig druk toen de lichten iets later dan gepland doofden en de band het podium betrad. Henrik begon met een bescheiden begroeting waarna de jam sessie werd gestart. Er was meteen een heerlijke flow. Henrik maakte volop oogcontact met Armin en Moritz. Je voelde direct dat dit een zeer goed concert zou gaan worden, want de onderlinge chemie die de band uitstraalde was duidelijk zichtbaar. Henrik bespeelde zijn gitaar vol vuur, dat leverde heel terecht tussentijds applaus op. Hardy liet zo nu en dan korte solo’s horen, na iedere solo viel de band als één man weer in. Armin zorgde voor gave bas grooves, het Hammond spel van Moritz was zeer goed. De bandleden hebben allemaal een vrij ingetogen manier van performen, maar je kon aan hun gezicht zien dat ze het goed naar hun zin hadden. Kortom, deze instrumentale opening kon niet beter.

Er waren diverse plotselinge tempo-en volumewisselingen, deze werden prima gespeeld en met een extra applaus beloond. Henrik genoot zichtbaar van het mooie Hammond spel van Moritz. Hij roemde Moritz, waarna applaus volgde. De opbouw naar het einde toe was leuk.
Daarna werden er diverse nummers van het nieuwe album gespeeld, zoals ‘Turn Back The Clock’, met zijn mooie luistertekst, en ‘The Given Groove’. Gevolgd door ‘Lost Souls’, het licht paste bij dit rustige nummer. Voor in de zaal was iedereen stil, achteraan werd nog wat gepraat, langzaam werd het ook daar stil. Henrik zong en speelde gevoelig, ook als de muziek wat luider werd. Vooral tijdens instrumentale stukken voelde je de passie.
Het laatste nummer voor de pauze was ‘The Bridge’. Weer was het gitaarspel super, wat een extra applaus opleverde. Henrik vroeg het publiek mee te zingen met zijn woordeloze zang. Dat deed men zacht maar respectvol. Je zag het plezier op zijn gezicht.
The Question
Na de pauze kwam het nieuwe album met onder andere ‘The Question’ weer aan bod. Men werd geraakt door de langzaam gezongen woorden. Moritz speelde langaanhoudende tonen, het publiek was tot en met de laatste noot muisstil.
In de gevarieerde set was er ook plaats voor ‘Longer Days’ uit 2011. Moritz en zijn Hammond werden op het juiste moment belicht, wat het concert nog wat extra’s gaf. Door middel van non-verbale communicatie verliep het plotseling einde goed. Non-stop volgde ‘She Ain’t Got the Blues’, en de cover ’The Sky Is Crying’. Waarbij je zijn pijn bijna kon voelen. Tijdens een heel ingetogen gespeeld deel werd het publiek stil. Tempo en volume werden omhoog gestuwd, om vervolgens weer te zakken. Dit herhaalde zich een paar keer. Zowel de minimalistische als de snelle delen waren perfect. Deze versie was aangenaam lang, dus werd ook de opbouw naar einde langer gerekt.
Bad Dreams
Na het fantastische laatste nummer (met diverse solo’s), werd er flink geklapt en geroepen om meer. De band was vrij snel terug om ‘Bad Dreams’ te spelen. Henrik startte rustig, de rest van de band volgde precies op het juiste moment. Er was vrij veel rook op het podium, waardoor Hardy en Armin in de mist gehuld waren. De wending naar het ingetogen instrumentale deel, en het uitgebreide instrumentele deel zelf waren zeer goed. In een rustig gespeeld deel toonde Henrik lef door even zonder microfoon te zingen, waarna tempo en volume in één keer omhoog gingen. Korte tijd later eindigde dit nummer, en dus dit concert, heel rustig. De muziek was soms wat minder ingetogen dan anders, je had je gehoorbescherming wel nodig. De bescheiden Henrik Freischlader en zijn band speelden zoals altijd zonder show elementen. Maar hun passie en hun liefde voor de muziek was duidelijk voelbaar.
