Sinisthra is een Finse metal band, hun muziek is niet alleen heavy, maar soms ook melancholisch. Vaak met invloeden van zowel de jaren ’70 prog, als grunge uit de jaren ’90.
Zanger Tomi Joutsen zingt ook in de band Amorphis. Deze is zo succesvol, dat deze band voorrang kreeg. Daarom is dit pas het tweede album van Sinisthra in twintig jaar. ‘The Broad and Beaten Way’ vormt een brug tussen hemel en aarde. De teksten gaan in grote lijnen over het chaotische en zelfvernietigende moderne leven, waarin men toch gemoedsrust probeert te vinden.

‘Eterne’ start met een mix van lichte en zware muziek, daarin zit ook een prima balans van strak gespeelde versus melodieuze muziek. Het verhaal gaat over Adam en Eva, zij worden verbannen uit Eden. Het geluid had een fractie rijker mogen zijn. Dus de zware stukken hadden wat voller kunnen klinken, en de lichte delen hadden wat virtuozer van klank kunnen zijn. Verder is het geheel goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon, en het evenwicht tussen zang en muziek, en de muziekinstrumenten onderling is ook prima.

Het openingsnummer is zeker oké, maar ik ben nog niet helemaal overtuigd. Die overtuiging is er wel aan het begin van ‘Closely Guarded Distance’. En dat gevoel wordt alleen maar sterker naarmate het nummer vordert. Er zijn gave tegenstellingen en verrassende wendingen. De balans en de afwisseling tussen licht en zwaar gespeelde delen is zeer goed. Het drumwerk is heerlijk, en de snaren zijn lekker zwaar bespeeld. Ondertussen klinken op achtergrond gesproken woorden. De hoge, vrouwelijke stem die ingezet is als instrument, is geweldig! Het klein gespeelde deel ongeveer in het midden is onverwacht, maar zeer goed. Het blijkt niet zomaar een kort minimalistisch stukje te zijn, maar het duurt aangenaam lang. Klein minpuntje is dat het geluid niet helemaal helder is, toch maakt het indruk. Als je het bijna niet meer verwacht, is er na een poosje toch weer power. Dit is echt tof opgebouwd, zeker omdat er klassieke elementen in zitten. Dit fantastische nummer eindigt bijzonder!

‘Halfway To Somewhere Else’ blijft een poosje heerlijk rustig, zowel qua zang als muziek. De achtergrondzang is subtiel, maar goed toegevoegd. De zang wordt even iets intenser, toch wordt deze track niet zo ingrijpend als ik gehoopt had. De vocale uithaal vlak voor de volumetoename zit daar wel heel dichtbij. Als die uithaal wat langer had geduurd, was ik wel geraakt.
Het vervolg van deze track verloopt met meer power. Goede track, al haalt dit niet de impact van ‘Closely Guarded Distance’. De nummers die hierna komen zijn ook goed gevuld met contrasten tussen licht en zwaar. Er zijn dus volop wendingen, en er zijn genoeg details.

Het mooi opgebouwde ‘Safe In The Arms Of Everlasting Now’ heeft een gaaf einde, en dito start van ‘Ephemeral’. Het begin is klein, bijna breekbaar gespeeld en gezongen. De eenzame Adam ziet uiteindelijk dat zijn daden uit het verleden zinloos zijn. De verandering naar power is een beetje saai. Van het powerstuk zelf had ik ook iets meer verwacht. Helemaal op de achtergrond zijn er enkele gesproken zinnen te horen. Na een sferisch stuk dooft dit laatste nummer heel langzaam, maar mooi uit.

Als geluid (nagenoeg) perfect was geweest, was dit absoluut een top album geweest.
Nu zijn ze daar echt niet ver van af. Want zowel de klein gespeelde delen, als de metal is goed gespeeld. Bovendien zijn de nummers zijn boeiend van structuur. Last but not least: de heerlijke stem van Tomi sluit naadloos aan bij dit alles.

Sinisthra – The Broad and Beaten Way

Sinisthra is a Finnish metal band, their music is not only heavy, but sometimes melancholic as well. Often with influences from both the 70’s prog, as well as grunge from the 90’s.

That’s why this is only Sinisthra’s second album in twenty years. ‘The Broad and Beaten Way‘ forms a bridge between heaven and earth. The lyrics are about the chaotic and self-destructive modern life, in which one tries to find peace of mind.

‘Eterne‘ starts with a mix of light and heavy music, which also contains a fine balance of tightly played versus melodic music. The story is about Adam and Eve, they are banished from Eden. The sound could have been a fraction richer. So, the heavy parts could have sounded a bit fuller, and the light parts could have sounded a bit more virtuoso. Furthermore, the whole is well distributed over the headphones, and the balance between vocals and music, and the musical instruments among themselves, is also fine.

The opening song is definitely okay, but I’m not completely convinced yet. That conviction is there at the beginning of ‘Closely Guarded Distance‘. And that feeling only gets stronger as the song continues. There are cool contrasts and surprising twists. The balance and the alternation between light and heavy parts is very good.
The drumming is great, and bass and guitars are nice and heavy played. Meanwhile spoken words can be heard in the background. The high, feminine voice used as an instrument is magnificent! The small played part about in the middle is unexpected, but very good. It turns out not to be just a short minimalistic piece, but it takes pleasantly long. A minor drawback is that the sound is not completely clear, yet it makes an impression. When you almost don’t expect it anymore, after a while there is power again. This is really cool, especially because there are classic elements in it. This fantastic song ends very special!

‘Halfway To Somewhere Else‘ stays quiet for a while, both in vocals and music. The background vocals are subtle, but well added. The vocals become a bit more intense, yet this track is not as drastic as I had hoped. The vocal outburst just before the volume increase is very close to that. If it would have lasted a bit longer, I would have been hit.
The sequel of this track goes with more power. Good track, although this does not have the impact of ‘Closely Guarded Distance‘. The tracks that follow are also well filled with contrasts between light and heavy. So, there are plenty of twists and turns, and there are plenty of details.

The nicely built up ‘Safe In The Arms Of Everlasting Now‘ has a great ending, and ditto starts of ‘Ephemeral‘. The beginning is small, almost fragile played and sung. The lonely Adam finally sees that his actions from the past are useless. The change to power is a bit dull. I also expected a bit more from the heavily played part itself. Completely in the background some spoken sentences can be heard. After a spherical piece this last song extinguishes very slowly, but nicely.

If sound had been (almost) perfect, this would definitely have been a top album.
Now they’re really not far from that. For both the small parts, as well as the metal are well played. On top of that, the songs are fascinating in structure. Last but not least: Tomi’s delightful voice fits in seamlessly with all this.
